LYNN COHEN CAST AS MAGS IN LIONSGATE’S THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

Santa Monica, CA, August 2, 2012- Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire are pleased to announce that Lynn Cohen has been cast in the role of Mags in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire. A former mentor to Finnick Odair, Mags is an eighty year old Hunger Games victor from District 4.

Known to New York theater audiences for decades of memorable roles, Cohen has also appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Steven Spielberg’s Munich and Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, NY, as well as commercial fare such as Sex and The City and its sequel. She can next be seen in They Came Together, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has sold more than 50 million books in print and digital in the U.S. alone.

Lionsgate will release The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on November 22, 2013.

UPDATE: In their article about Cohen's casting, Deadline reveals that Snow White And The Huntsman star Sam Claflin - who was previously Lionsgate's top choice to play the character Finnick Odair - will likely be set for the fan favorite role. Benjamin Walker, Boyd Holbrook and Tyler Hoechlin were the other competitors for that role.

I didn't think the first one was to bad but not what I was expecting with all the hype built around it.

It was posted because it's news for a movie that we cover on the site. Duh.

i thought the movie was good, thoroughly enjoyed it, although i do wonder why news for this franchise often pops up on this site. the only possible CBM reference i can really reach for to try and rationalize it would be First Class (Jennifer Lawrence), but i feel like someone being in a CBM and then going on to do other movies shouldn't really qualify as CBM news.
rant over.

To be fair, it is sci-fi/fantasy (most of which can be covered on the site). Plus, the film/books are well received by geeks (which is also why we covered Harry Potter), soo...

Just because the story has a female protagonist and love triangle doesn't make it like Twilight. Here are some significant differences:

HG is post-apocalyptic psci-fi, not urban fantasy girl porn.
HG is about survival and humanity, not the importance of having a boyfriend
HG has a female protagonist who actually drives the plot, it doesn't just happen to her
HG is better written and better acted/directed overall

Seriously, give the franchise a shot and see it before you judge it, it's actually pretty good.

i'm not gonna bother with rushing to see this, the first movie was pretty much a chick flick/teen romance with a touch of violence.

At least the female lead in Hungers Games is strong and independent, unlike that other lead from that other franchise.

I enjoyed the books but I thought the movie should have been rated hard R. Making it PG-13 and quick-cutting the violence takes the sting out of the message the book was trying to convey. Still, I liked the movie and I'll check the sequel out probably.

I confirm Moriarty117's comment.

I might actually watch the third movie. It's the only book that I actually kinda liked. Over all though there are way better book series that could have been adapted.

this isn't even CBM news, just because Lawrence played mystique it doesn't mean anything to Comics, i enjoyed the first movie and I'll see this one but we can find this out somewhere else...

She doesn't look very likeable. I guess that's a good thing, since this is the Hunger Games, and good people don't win the Hunger Games. So, to sum up, I don't like her and that's a good thing.
