REBEL MOON Star Charlie Hunnam Faces Two Year Recovery After Sustaining Injury During Shooting

King Arthur star Charlie Hunnam is among the actors who will star in Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon, but he was unlucky enough to sustain a nasty injury while working on the upcoming sci-fi movie. Check it out!

There's a huge amount of hype surrounding Man of Steel director Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon, particularly as the concept is one he originally pitched to Lucasfilm for a Star Wars movie in the mid-2010s.

Inspired by the classic Seven Samurai, the plan is for this to be a new sci-fi franchise on Netflix, similar to what the filmmaker has done with Army of the Dead (which has spawned a prequel and animated spinoff thus far). Rumour has it the movie will be split in two, while Snyder really hasn't struggled to assemble an impressive A-List cast.

Among them are Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, Sofia Boutella, Cary Elwes, and Corey Stoll, not to mention action movie veteran, Charlie Hunnam.

Unfortunately, he sustained a serious injury while making Rebel Moon.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com), Hunnam explained, "I just finished doing the Zack Snyder film and got injured again. I have a totally exploded S1 and S2 that are torn wide open, a hundred percent dehydrated." That's a reference to the hip/groin and thighs, so he's not doing great!

"It’s going to take two years to heal and I have a 40 percent tear on the ligament on the right side that holds my spinal column in place," he adds, explaining the consequences of this injury. "I am getting to a point where I’m less tolerant of getting injured and more eager to try and figure out ways to avoid that and mitigate that moving forward."

"But the intrepid nature of these experiences go hand in hand with the stories that I’m drawn to, so it kind of goes with the territory."

As for how the injury happened, Hunnam was quick to point out that it was "nobody's fault." The actor would go on to say, "I was training really hard for some big physical requirements that I had to do, but I had lost a lot of weight and not really been training for a few years during COVID."

"So then, really getting back to an aggressive regimen while not listening to my body or giving myself enough time to rest and trying to get as big as I could as quickly as I could, ended up just destroying my back."

It should go without saying that we wish him a speedy recovery as it sounds like Hunnam has had a rough few months. As for Rebel Moon, that doesn't have a release date, but will stream exclusively on Netflix (likely sometime next year or in early 2024).

As someone who used to be really into body building I totally get where he’s coming from. It’s tough when you’ve gotten to a certain point you don’t want to lower your training level after time off but it necessary. I have a 7% curve in my spine now because of exactly that so I wish him nothing but a quick recovery and future health

@Ha1frican - how does the curved spine impact you? If you don't mind me asking
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 10/9/2022, 9:43 AM
@MyCoolYoung - Mostly chronic discomfort day to day. Like 5 years ago I was doing barbell shoulder press with 135lbs and when I went to reravk the hooks were far enough behind my head that I missed and it fell and I had to catch it behind my head. It created a lot of scar tissue which led to that tightness slowly pulling my spine out of alignment. Now at all times it feels like that discomfort when you need to crack your neck or knuckles but when work out I get numbness down my arm and sometimes a shooting pain that feels like my whole left side got hit by lightning. Also if I sit down for too long like driving or on a plane it creates a stabbing pain between my shoulder blades. It’s livable and nowhere near as bad as what’s described in the article but only being 29 it’s also not great that my back is already this messed up 😅

@Ha1frican - lol damn. I'm sorry to hear that. I had herniated disc in my back when I was 17, and it's still the worst pain I've ever had. I couldn't walk for two months.

@MyCoolYoung - My mom actually has 6 herniated disks 😬 degenerative disk runs in my family so it’ll happen to me eventually lol

@Ha1frican - a teenager at the gym asked me if he should compete. I told him no. You have to obsess and it’s not always rewarding. Tons of money spent, no time for friends and fam, and you have to be like top 3 to make up for the money, you never get time with folks back.

Probably ain’t Gon listen to me

I never bodybuilt or powerlifted, I’m short fat and stocky, but I can do more than 5 sets of 10 with 225? I don’t know how many I get bored and move on. 6 or 7 reps with 275. And yeah I do hit other muscles but due to fear of back problems I never went high 300’s or above on squat or deads. Forget that. And guess what? Still got a hernia. The other day it hurt so bad I felt like getting surgery and being done with it. I’ll have to eventually. Deadlifts with 335 and no belt 🤦🏽‍♂️Last December. Basically I lift, but I’m only finally caring about the nutrition cuz I’m 40 and like a girl🤷🏾‍♂️The gut ain’t Gon cut it

@Ha1frican - wow lol how is she?
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 10/9/2022, 5:21 PM
@MyCoolYoung - She’s a lot better now, she was in a car accident in 2010 that basically aggravated the natural degeneration and at one point she was paraplegic for about a year. Thankfully she’s regained most of her leg function just a slight limp but it was rough for a few years. A lot of injections and fusions but she’s mostly normal at this point

S1? Oof, if anyone believes in prayer they might want to ask for some special consideration for Hunnam. That injury can lead to cauda equina syndrome, which is such a lovely medical emergency mix of pain, loss of leg function and bladder/bowel control.

Clearly, Snyder’s reign of terror must be stopped.

"Injury during shooting?" He specifically said it wasn't during shooting and due to his workout regiment. Just write anything that comes to your mind to get them clicks, don't you?

It's a shame Wildling doesn't even bother putting the real source in the article anymore.

Trying to do the Zach Snyder shredded-regimen in your 40's will do that, ouch! Cavill and Butler were both in their 30's when they got jacked for Zach.

@Toblakai - THIS. When it happened to Ronnie Coleman he was deadlifting 800 lbs. well he wasn’t just a bodybuilder he powerlifted too but powerlifters ain’t walk-in round all veiny and vascular so you might look stronger than you are, and massive as he was, he could’ve been bigger if he never cut. That might have saved his back and hips. I never want to disparage the king of bodybuilding, but I do think that’s what happened. OK he’s a king of bodybuilding but he was the king for a minute

Hopefully they are smart and they shoot all of Anthony Hopkins stuff already, that actor doesn't have 2 years left, he's too old to wait around while Charlie heals.

@Timerider84 - Hopkins appears to be in fantastic health, I could see him making it into his nineties.

Sounds like avascular osteonecrosis to me, with the working out and not listening to his body. Tears that region up, usually the hip bones, as with Ronnie Coleman. Steroids users have a higher chance of getting it, it’s not super common but common enough. A friend of mine that got it was asked by a doctor if he used steroids, he was actually the only one he’d seen with it that did not juice (he didn’t even lift bro, I think he stole his necrosis 💪🏾 💪🏾)
