Bad news for the RoboCop sequel, as director Neill Blomkamp (Chappie) has taken to social media to confirm that he will no longer be taking the helm of the movie. Find out why that is after the jump...

There had been a lot of excitement surrounding the RoboCop sequel, especially with District 9 director Neill Blomkamp at the helm of the movie, which is set to serve as a direct follow-up to the first instalment. It was at the end of June that he told fans on social media that the "script is being written" and that things were "going well," while he also confirmed that the original, clunky suit would make its return.

Well, things have now changed dramatically. The filmmaker has taken to Twitter to confirm that he's no longer going to direct RoboCop because he's currently shooting a horror/thriller movie, which means he won't be able to work to the schedule MGM wants.

It's surprising that the studio would let him go at this stage because they're anxious to start shooting the movie, but there's probably a predictably boring reason to blame like them wanting to get it in theaters for a certain date so they can hit certain targets with box office receipts. Either way, this is a blow to the project and it's hard to imagine MGM finding someone equally as passionate.

While Blomkamp is for me a Hit/Miss director, he was really passionate about this so him going is unfortunate.
I hope MGM doesn't hire a time merc that rushes the film looking for dates and takes some time to give it the feel it needs to resonate with the people that are going to be interested in this and purchase their tickets.

@soberchimera - Well, I like his short stuff apart from features but yeah, the theatrical record isn't particularly stellar...

This guy keeps getting shafted. He couldn't make the sequel to Aliens because Ridley has too much of an ego and now this.

@DwightKGroot - Lets not forget he was originally suppose to direct the Halo movie as well. At least we got District 9 out of it.

@Himura - He himself is also to blame. Chappie and that Matt Damon movie felt too much similar to District 9. He needs to do something else entirely.

I just want to see Peter Weller suit up again.. make it a “Logan” type swan song kinda movie .. hard R rating.. I’d pay to watch it..

Peter Waller’s also one of my top picks for old Bruce in a Batman Beyond movie.. Peter Weller, Michael Keaton, Kevin Conroy or fantasy cast Clint Eastwood

This is bullshit. How would they have not known what the shooting schedule was until they're literally ready to start shooting? This stuff gets figured out early on. Something else is going on. Robocop is one of my favourite movies. Was really looking forward to something along the lines of District 9/Dread with Peter Weller coming back like Jamie Lee Curtis did for Halloween. I hope they don't mess this up.

Y'all some haters. lol District 9 is a 10/10 movie even by today's standards, and Elysium was [frick]ing amazing as well. Chappie was a mixed bag for me, but his shorts have been awesome. I just want him to make another movie.
