Segregation on the Planet of the Apes!

Incredibly, it seems that a history of segregation on the Planet of the Apes is repeating itself if what Andy Serkis, who plays Caesar in this August's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, says is true!

According to Serkis, who is currently shooting Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, those wearing motion capture suits were treated differently from everyone else!

“In the Planet of the Apes documentary they talked about how the orangutans hung out with the other orangutans, the chimps hung out with the chimps, and the gorillas hung out with the gorillas," Serkis tells Showbiz Spy. "And to a certain extent there was a little bit of that shooting this movie. We tended to knock around together.”

What he's referring to is the late Charlton Heston's oft-told story of the way that actors dressed as chimps, gorillas and orangutans tended to center around each other, creating a sense of segregation on the set of the original Planet of the Apes.

So, people sharing the same activity socialize with each other. Interesting. I also heard that water might actually be wet.

I don't get the new movie at all.... the basic plot is pretty much old hat: man tries to help mankind through experimentation by playing god or whatnot, creates something new by either accidentally evolving a subspecies or other gimmick thereby causing it to be their doom, then the aftermath of that decision/effect is explored in sequels if the movie generates enough interest. Basically, it's still an apocalypse movie with "apes" with the same formula being used.

BlackSands And when I say Planet of the Apes is a limited concept, there are a few in particular that come after me foaming at the mouth. There's really nothing else you could do with the property. We've seen it before and it's an old, simple, formula.

@NeoBaggins, agreed, which begs the question why they're still trying to work with it.... it's like they ran out of ideas for other films and just re-do something old with a supposed "different" feel. Yeah, it might do good, etc etc.... but the damned plot already gives it away no matter how much they try to amp it up with effects, etc.... I can even probably guess that they're gonna add 3D to this thing too... so sad.... just from the trailer alone, it's like a Roland Emmerich disaster movie with apes, only Roland Emmerich isn't even anywhere NEAR this project.

James Franco is in it so i'll give it a chance but other wise the trailer did look weird with the cgi and the whole ape standing in the bedroom just freaked the shite outta Me!!!!

There are less than 1 million different species of apes total, left on the planet today.
There are 6.91 billion humans......
Yeah, I think we got this.

@spideydude How does one detemine a movie is stupid one has never seen. Also the previous movie was a retelling /reimagined of the story.

@Ichaos I think that spideydude feels that the general idea of the movie is...pretty stupid. But the Planet of the Apes movies were always very cheesy/farfetched. This one appears to be going for the "intense", "realistic", and "dark and gritty" tone, and yet, none of this is even remotely possible.

WellDrawn: Thanks for posting that! One of my favorite Simpson songs. Sad that they don't seem to have the other song: I hate every ape I see, from chimpan-A to chimpanzee!

That said, I'm rather interested in seeing this movie. I was a huge fan of the original series of movies as a kid, and even enjoyed the TV series. I'm not crazy about the idea of CGI apes as opposed to the makeup and prosthetics used in the earlier films, but the story still sounds rather interesting. If it's done right, this could be the best thing to come out this summer.

@ichaos because if you have seen the other planet of the apes movies then the premise of this is unnecessary and stupid, they have already explained how the apes "rose" and it worked well - this just shits on the old movies cannon whats the point of it?

@Illuminatus: Humans are a type of ape. Ape is a superfamily not a Genus. So when you bring scientific talk into this you got to know what you're facts. Besides even if we weren't in that superfamily you're comment wouldn't make sense since you're first sentence is about number of species in a superfamily and your second is about world population of all the individuals in a specific Species

did someone just say that the planet of the apes movies were too, how was that again? "far fetched"... while this is true. consider this. this is a comic book based website. So what are you saying? Blade, Xmen, Watchmen, hulk, thor.. all these are much more feasible? much more real.. haha...
denotsip
denotsip - 4/20/2011, 4:47 PM
@golden 123.. Right about that.. there are defenitley NOT a million species of apes, haha. but.... WRONG.. humans are not a type of ape. apes and humas are both primates. the split in evolution came along a long time ago which led to our own paths in the animal kingdom. since then the "human" side of the path has split many times over only alowing those that adaped the best to survive. hence why we no longer see homofloresiensis or homoerectus. good bye neanderthals, helo homosapiens. but we are defenetly not a type of ape.

@denotsip and @golden123 you're both wrong. the superfamily is called Hominidae and there are four distinct genus of that family: Ape, Chimpanzee, Human, and Orangutans.
