The premier of Star Trek Beyond went down at Sydney, Australia today, and along with some the attending talents speaking out about the tragic loss of their colleague Anton Yelchin, actor John Cho had something very interesting to say about the character of Hikaru Sulu whom he plays in the movies recently named Kelvin Timeline.

Obviously, SPOILERS ahead...

According to Cho and the article on Libertan, Sulu in Star Trek Beyond is shown as the father of a daughter he has with a same sex partner. Cho told the interviewer that this decision by writer Simon Pegg and Lin was a nod to George Takei, the original actor of the character, who has been outed as gay for many years and is an outspoken gay rights activist.

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations.”

Kiwi actor Karl Urban on the other hand, who will be in Thor: Ragnarok and start shooting in Australia in a few weeks, spoke about the sad loss of Chekov-actor Anton Yelchin last month, according to couriermail.

"It’s bittersweet with the passing of Anton. It’s devastating losing someone in your family. This feels like it should be a time for celebration not just of the film but of him, his extraordinary talent and the beautiful man he was. I’m having a difficult time coming to grips with talking about him in the past tense — it’s very raw and very painful."

Star Trek Beyond is in cinemas in the USA on July 22nd, 2016.

I fail to see how Sulu being gay would ruffle feathers. IS this really still a thing?

I've seen 1.5 of the new Star Trek movies. Only saw the last half of the second one on TV, but they're definitely not as shitty as Star Wars. So that's something positive.
