A List of Directors who should/shouldn't direct the next Star Wars

My opinions on who should direct the next trilogy...

I think it’s important that the next trilogy of Star Wars films should be directed by the same person or persons. I think this is important to make sure that the feel of the films be cohesive. The list of should are directors who could be up to this gigantic task for continuing the films and the SHOULDN’T are a list of directors who, although are good directors, should avoid the films.

SHOULD

Joe Johnston
Mr. Johnston got his start in the film business on the very first Star Wars trilogy working in the visual effects department. Lucas and him became close friends and Lucas would later pay to have Johnston go to film school. Mr. Johnston did phenomenal work on Captain America: First Avenger.

The Wachowskis
Both are die hard nerd with a love for comics, although Star Wars is far more than just comics they would understand the importance of getting it right. They have a trilogy already under their belt with The Matrix which is arguably a tent pole movie for all CGI work.

Peter Jackson
Not much is needed to be said about Mr. Jackson. He also has a trilogy under his belt and a second trilogy finishing now. He has extreme amount of experience of taking literature that already has lore and canon and adapting it to fit into a movie.

SHOULDN’T

Christopher Nolan
Although Mr. Nolan as a trilogy under belt and knows how to make a good movie, he lacks the ablity to staying true to already set canon and sticking to other authors work.

Joss Whedon
Current Nerd Favorite director that I would love to see take a crack at Star Wars but lets be realistic Avengers 2, which he is directing, will be coming out the same year as the Next Star Wars and he would have absolutely no time to do both.

J. J Abrams
He did great transforming Star Trek to a modern Sci-Fi standard but that’s Star Trek and Star Trek is his brain baby. No way he would jump ship to work on Star Wars

Brad Bird
I can’t believe people are actually suggesting him. Ok yes he has worked with Disney in the past…in animation. He only has one live action movie under his belt and that was MI: Ghost Protocol, which was a standard action flick that anybody could have directed. Please keep him away from Star Wars.

Peter Jackson
Although I have him listed above he is also listed here because he will be very distracted in trying to finish editing and all the post production work on the Hobbit Trilogy. So most likely he won’t have time to do Star Wars.

What about the guy who directed The Empire Strikes Back? Before you say anything, NO it wasn't Lucas. But this guy (whose name escapes me) made what is regarded as the best move in the saga...why not him?

@zachman2013

They aren't rebooting the series.

Episodes 7,8 and 9 are going to continue the Skywalker inspired Star Wars universe. It's a continuation of the first 6 episodes written and for the most part directed by Lucas. It should have some resemblance to the other six episodes that came before it.

If they were going to reboot, the universe. I would agree with you.

However, since this isn't a reboot, but a continuation, there is no other director that can keep with the tone set by Lucas and bring that universe to life the way that Spielberg could. Spielberg understands Lucas like no other director.

Irvin Kershner died in 2010.

Im aware they are not rebooting it, but Spielburg would listen to lucas for that particular film's story. I'm all for the skywalker driven universe. That's what makes it great.

I still don't know what to think about any of this. I don't care about Disney buying the rights - if I wanted to see Star Wars return, I'd be extremely excited by the news, but truth be told, I'm completely burned out on it.

I mean if there's any continuation of a series I want to see more than anything else - it's Firefly, in an animated form.

On that note, an Star Wars tv series replacing Clone Wars would be interesting, especially if it featured the voice talent of the original series.

@Fangz & Zach

You guys can't be serious. Spielberg can out direct any director mentioned as a possibility on this site.

Plus, his name carries huge gravitas. The Spielberg name (alone) sells a movie to the masses. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, regardless to how you feel about the movie, (was made on 185 Million) made $787 Million. Crystal Skull made more money than every movie directed by Matthew Vaughn combined.

And, we are talking about the guy who helped usher in the summer blockbuster with JAWS (1975).

There have been 10 movies that have rocked the Highest-grossing film category since 1937. Spielberg controlled the chart from 1975 to 1977 with JAWS (dethroned by Star Wars), and he came back with E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in 1982, the movie stayed the top grossing movie for 15 years until it was dethroned by Titanic in 1997.

Currently, the only director working today that can outshine Spielberg (and it's highly debatable) is James Cameron. He has held the title of Highest grossing director since 1997 for both Titanic and Avatar (a feat only accomplished by Spielberg before him).

And, Spielberg can't out direct most directors in just Summer Blockbusters, he directs Dramas that make hundreds of millions (numbers only seen with big franchise features). He has two Oscars (for Schindler and Ryan), and I'm sure that he'll get a third before he retires.

He is worth 3.2Billion. And, his movies have made an excess of 8.5Billion (before inflation). Spielberg is one of the smartest people working in holly-wood.

No Jon Favreau? I mean, sure he hasn't got anything real big under his belt but his work with Iron Man and Cowboys & Aliens should show that he at least can direct a Sci-Fi centred film while sticking both to the original source and original feel. He's aspect with comedy is also a nice way to lighten up some of the Star Wars films.
