Fans of Star Wars will surely either be glad or concerned about this news. According to CBR.com, the late Carrie Fisher's family has agreed to allow Lucasfilm and Disney to use recent footage of the actress to create her performance in Episode IX in 2019.

CBR reports that Todd Fisher, brother of the late actress, speaking to the New York Daily News, has confirmed that his sister is planned to make one last appearance, without the use of CGI.

The website quotes him saying, “Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t. She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue.”

It should, however, be noted that the extent to which she will appear is uncertain at this time. Fisher explains, “I’m not the only part in that equation, but I think the people deserve to have her. She’s owned by them."

Carrie Fisher will next appear as General Leia in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which arrives in theatres on December 15th.

Sounds good to me. I'm glad they're not going the CGI route.

Its gotta be so hard having to talk about shit like this for the family. I just had to put my dog down and i cry everytime i look at her bowl, i cant imagine having to do all this with my mom or brother.

As long as her family are cool with the approach they take, then everyone else should let this alone. Also, it's cool her brother is able and willing to talk about this. The fans are certainly fortunate that these talks are happening.

Death is a complicated matter, and many folks deal with it in many different ways. Having to deal with a lost loved one being part of a fictional but still active plot line must further complicate the situation. Hopefully, in some strange way, this can help bring closure for Fisher's family, as Star Wars was a big part of her life.

It'll be interesting to see how they do it with existing footage only.

I'd be ok with cgi. As long as it's done as good as they possibly can. She needs to be in the movie, not killed off screen or just written out.

Why do people consider CGI disrespectful, but killing the character not? I agree with @CaptDeadpool, they can CGI her face from existing footage onto a new body double, and I think that'd be the best way to pay respect, as well as feature the character. RIP Carrie.

At 1st I was ok with CGI in Rogue1 but after watching it the other day on, not so much.

This is making me feel things.

I suppose if they can make it seem like Gump was chatting with famous dead folk so well, this is not beyond the scope of possibility.

Not sure if I like it though. CGI has come a long way since back in the day, but even looking at the CGI Tarkin in Rogue One was distracting at best. Decent attempt but it looked to me like he had a lazy eye and a speech impediment.

The CGI Leia was wretched though. If this is the route they're pursuing, I hope they manage to clean it up a LOT by that time. Tarkin was meh but the Leia attempt was just brutal.

This would very likely be a stunt double or look-alike. Not CGI to recreate the character.

@Scarilian - A human being and not CGI would be infinitely better. Sounds like they might be looking at a lot of fromt the back shots, wide shots, and voice overs. Force Ghost maybe?

@BigDaddyJinx -

Force Ghost could probably work, either that or holograms. Generally something that could be seen in a lower quality to help blurr the likeness a bit.

I'm expecting them to go with an idea where they say 'Leia has journeyed beyond the outer rim' or something like that to generally imply she's still around travelling through space.

No CGI, eh? So...they'll be using an animatronic, stop-motion figure to recreate Leia. Gotta love the practical effects!

Alright, I get it...that may have been too soon.

RIP princess.
