We may have had a teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but there's still an awful lot we don't know about the movie. That's no bad thing, of course, and unlike Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this instalment of the beloved franchise hasn't suffered from anywhere near as many plot/artwork leaks.

However, a recent article in Vanity Fair has finally shed at least a little light on what's to come in the highly anticipated release and it sounds like we have a very long list of reasons to be very excited.

So, after combing through the article we've rounded up the five biggest and most shocking new details about Star Wars: The Last Jedi. From the movie's new characters to where we pick up with Luke Skywalker and what the deal is with Kylo Ren and a variety of spoilers, you'll want to check this out!

5. Luke And Rey Aren't Alone On That Island

Director Rian Johnson confirms that following the events of Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker did indeed attempt to create a new Jedi Order which was destroyed by one of his apprentices (still assumed to be Ben Solo/Kylo Ren). The filmmaker also makes it clear that Luke was successful in his quest to find the first Jedi Temple and that he's now living in a "little Jedi village." However, he's not alone.

The magazine reports that he's been staying there with an indigenous race of caretaker creatures who are "not Ewoks." That's interesting, but it also doesn't sound like we're getting the Luke we all know and love as what he's been through has changed him a lot. Because of that, we can forget any sort of "one-to-one correlation" between the way he was taught by Yoda to how Luke handles Rey. "There’s a training element to it," he adds, "but it’s not exactly what you would expect." That's all Johnson would say, but it's clear now that The Last Jedi is very much going to be Luke's movie.

4. The Last Jedi's New Characters

The Force Awakens introduced us to a fair few new characters, but it appears as if even more are on the way in The Last Jedi. First up is Paige, played by a Vietnamese actress named Veronica Ngo. She's going to be working with Poe Dameron as a gunner he's coaching and is the sister of Rose Tice (Kelly Marie Tran), a new addition to the franchise who is expected to play a key role in this movie. She'll be teaming up with Finn on a mission we still don't know a whole lot about, but it's been confirmed that she's a maintenance worker for the Resistance and that they'll be heading behind enemy lines.

Also on the way is a prominent officer in the Resistance named Vice Admiral Holdo
, played by Laura Dern. Will she clash with General Leia? That remains to be seen, but by far the biggest addition is Benicio Del Toro, "a shady character" whose allegiances are unknown. He's being called DJ for now, but director Rian Johnson promises that, "You’ll see—there’s a reason why we call him DJ." Speculation is also running rampant in regards to what that could mean, but we'll have to wait and see.

3. Kylo Ren's Unexpected Scar

It's not been made clear exactly how much time will have passed between the events of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi because while it has been mentioned that the Luke and Rey scene will pick up right where it left off in the last movie, the next scene could take place weeks or months later for all we know. However, John Boyega reveals that when we next see Finn, he'll be in a "bacta suit" still recovering from that brief duel with Kylo Ren.

Adam Driver's villain, however, will also be healing up but not quite in the way you might think. "I feel like almost everyone is in that rehabilitation state," he teases. "You know, I don’t think that patricide is all that it’s cracked up to be. Maybe that’s where Kylo Ren is starting from. His external scar is probably as much an internal one." It sounds like he'll be struggling to get over murdering his father Han Solo then, something which should be very interesting to see play
out in the movie after his apparent turn to the Dark Side.

2. A New Side Of The Star Wars Universe

It was clear a while ago when some set photos popped up online that The Last Jedi will be taking us to some very different new locales and among them is a glittering casino city known as Canto Bight. Director Rian Johnson describes it as being, "a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief. It was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe." That's not a side of this world we've seen all that much of, but that only served to inspire the filmmaker. "I was thinking, O.K., let’s go ultra-glamour. Let’s create a playground, basically, for rich assholes."

Apparently, we'll get to see a lot of very weird and gross looking alien creatures, something Johnson was keen on including to give the otherwise quite dark movie for some much-needed levity. "I didn’t want this to be a dirge, a heavy-osity movie. So one thing I’ve tried really hard to do is keep the humour in there, to maintain the feeling, amid all the heavy operatic moments, that you’re on a fun ride."

1. Luke Makes It Off That Damn Island

It's going to be great catching up with Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi considering the fact we got literally just a few seconds of him in The Force Awakens, but I think it's fair to say that it would be more than a little unsatisfying for this movie to have him spend the whole thing on that mysterious island Rey tracked him down on. While the Vanity Fair article is cautious about dropping any spoilers, it seems Oscar Isaac may have spilled the beans by confirmed that Poe Dameron and Luke meet later in the movie.

"[To] be there, and to watch Mark revisit Luke, particularly in these scenes we were shooting towards the end of the film, was bizarre and jaw-dropping," he explains. "It’s like when you see an old band re-unite and go on the road, and they don’t quite hit those high notes anymore—though in this situation it’s completely the opposite. It’s the fulfilment
of where your imagination would take you when you imagine where Luke would go, or what he’s become." Yeah, this is going to be epic!

I feel Del Toro's character is going to be Ezra Bridger. The fact that the arent releasing his name hints towards him not being a new character.

So he is either (a) an existing character in canon or (b) a Legends character.

As for him being ezra. If you look closely at his right cheek in the photo there are scars which resemble ezras.

@McGee - it turns out she didn't give a shit about the war, she just wants the D.

I hope there's an excessive amount of full frontal nudity.

I think this movie will focus on the literal balancing of the force... Neither the Jedi or the Sith have it right, and it will be about balancing both the darkness and the light to really understand the Force.
or
...everybody could just get naked

Either way... great plot!
