STAR WARS: Natalie Portman Says She's "Open" To Playing Padmé Amidala Again In A Future Project

Natalie Portman played Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequels, but could we see her reprise the role? The actress says she'd be "open" to it while reflecting on a bizarre encounter with King Charles...

Natalie Portman first played Queen Padmé Amidala in 1999's Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, with that and Léon: The Professional responsible for putting the future Oscar-winner on the map as a young actress.

With Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin in Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka, there's been speculation about Portman also somehow showing up as Padmé again. With the Star Wars franchise making use of flashbacks, that wouldn't be too hard, and the most likely place for her to appear is in a long-overdue big or small screen Darth Vader project.

Now, the actress has confirmed she'd be willing to reprise the role...if the phone rings. Telling Andy Cohen (via SFFGazette.com) that "no one has asked," Portman said she's "open to it" and called her time working on the Star Wars prequels "amazing."

"It was the first time I worked digitally. I don’t think anyone was shooting that way then," she adds. "It was my first time working with a green screen. It was a whole new set of skills to pick up and a whole new world to enter."

In the same interview, Portman recalled what proved to be a bizarre meeting with King Charles at The Phantom Menace's London premiere. "I remember Prince Charles, he was then Prince Charles, asked me if I was in the originals. I was like, 'No, I’m 18!' But he was very friendly."

Earlier this year, Portman also shared a similarly peculiar interaction with filmmaker Taika Waititi on the set of Thor: Love and Thunder in which he suggested she could star in his upcoming Star Wars movie.

"He says he did [forget] because he like asked me if I wanted to be in a 'Star Wars' movie and I was like, 'I was,'" she remembered. "I thought he was joking. He’s such a joker that I thought it was a joke. And then afterward he said in some interview that he was like cringing afterward."

Portman played Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and was introduced in The Phantom Menace as the Queen of Naboo. In Attack of the Clones, Padmé became a Senator and embarked on a romantic relationship with Anakin Skywalker.

Her story concluded tragically in Revenge of the Sith when Padmé, now pregnant with twins, was forced to face the fall of the Galactic Republic and the transformation of Anakin into the evil Darth Vader.

Only opportunity would be in a What-If type series or a live-action Clone Wars show.
I don’t mind older actors not being deaged as long as they still kinda look young enough (which Portman and Christensen def do).

But generally I think SW needs to move away from this “era” and go 1000 years into the future.
Create new worlds, issues and conspiracies for Episode X-XII.
Bring in eldritch villains like Abeloth, new types of heroes that don’t always seem idealised

@Blergh - a What If based on each movie and a couple of Clone Wars arcs in the style of Tales of the Jedi would be pretty sweet. Surprised it isn't even rumoured to be in the works

@bkmeijer1 - there was a pretty popular comic book series for Episode 5 that started with Luke dying and Leia taking his spot.
Pretty cool book

@Blergh - yeah, I think I know it. Was called Infinities I believe. Also had A New Hope and Return of the Jedi alternate version

@bkmeijer1 - yes! That was the one! I'll go and check out the other ones in that series, I remember loving the book as a kid.

@Blergh - it had some fun stuff, but I do wanna see an animated Infinities show go in a different direction.

Can alreadu think of a few, like what if Luke decided to stay at the homestead (IV), if Ahsoka joined Maul (CW), or if Obi-Wan joined Dooku (II). Pretty much what happens if the characters that are offered a choice, they pick they other one.

Her appearance in a Vader series would be shattering. For Vader to grab her only for her to fade away...

Although I don't need to see Abeloth, I did like the theory online that if she does she takes the form of Padme to fuсk with Vader.

Also, that Taika bit is cringe indeed.

@bkmeijer1 - never heard of that theory! I’m liking it!

Generally I don’t need Abeloth specifically but a similar villain with supernatural and almost eldritch monster vibes.

@Blergh - a supernatural villain is definitely something that would shake things up. I like the general idea, especially if you describe it as eldritch monster/horror. There some weird Sith shit out there they could lean into heavily

I always thought it would have been cool to see a holographic image of her at her gravesite on Naboo and Luke Skywalker goes to visit her grave and sees his mother talking and laughing. It would have been a very emotional scene.
