TENET: Christopher Nolan's Movie Will Reportedly Be Released On DVD And Blu-ray This December

Tenet has struggled to live up to box office expectations thanks to COVID-19, but it appears we can look forward to getting to watch Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic from the safety of home this Christmas.

Film Stories is reporting that Christopher Nolan's Tenet is set to arrive on DVD and Blu-ray in the U.S. on December 15th. There's no word on special features, but it has been confirmed that the movie will have subtitles (which are bound to come in handy for what many critics described as indecipherable scenes thanks to muffled dialogue).

Nolan's movie failed to reignite the box office as both he and Warner Bros. had hoped, underperforming in a major way thanks to ongoing concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Simply put, moviegoers don't feel safe returning to theaters, and Tenet alone was not enough to help multiplexes stay afloat amidst a series of high profile blockbusters being delayed. It needed to make $500 million to break even, and with that looking more and more unlikely, it makes sense for Warner Bros. to capitalise on a quiet holiday season by putting Tenet on Blu-ray in time for Christmas.

Chances are a Digital release is also planned, and getting to watch the movie in a safe setting from the comfort of home should be welcomed. Whether it will help take Tenet out of the red is unclear.

As for The New Mutants, there's still no official word on what Disney has planned for Fox's final Marvel movie.

Will you be picking up Tenet on Blu-ray this December? Let us know your thoughts below.

@dracula -

I'm sure nolan would be happy with whatever he can get from the box office, after all, he pushed for the release of this movie in theaters,
regardless if people where too scared to watch it on the big screen,
regardless if people got sick with covid
regardless if there was no social distancing in the room

what a greedy, arrogant príck.

@Equivocal - Hey he was trying to help theaters and not like he forced people to see it, I wanted to see it in theaters but chose not to because of the pandemic. Wonder if anyone who actually went to see Tenet actually got sick. Either way it was a bad choice to release it.

Was halfway expecting a Thanksgiving-time release, but in time for Christmas was the next obvious choice. Either way, I'm happy to purchase that one on digital. Nolan has my support.

Just glad it got a theatrical run that helped theaters. Not to mention getting to see it on the big screen. Incredible.

@Origame - It looks like it did not help at all. In fact I'm getting the sense that the theaters, some more than others, (AMC, Cinemark/Regal) only had one sure roll of the dice left in them and they just crapped out. Shutting down again as I understand it will require them to go through expensive start-up expenditures again, which they can not afford.

@Origame - I really wanted to see this on the bit screen. As I have all other recent nolan movies. A shame really.

@JDL - over 300m worldwide, while not ideal, isnt something to just ignore. Especially since we dont know what was ultimately made in terms of snacks.

Now was this enough help? Probably not. But whether it helped or not isnt really debatable.

@pucrepeap - yeah. Also fyi i saw this opening weekend in a theater in a major city and got to have a screen to myself. If you're worried about getting exposed its probably not gonna happen.

@Origame - My original comments were meant to apply to the N.A. part of this release and I did not make that clear. My bad.

Hmm. OK The overseas take was under the circumstances, decent. No problem there afaik, as for concessions I know bupkus about how that goes elsewhere so I'll have to take a pass on that. But nobody much showed up in N.A., only $45M out of $307M and empty seats don't buy snacks.

The studios cut of the foreign B.O. is 10% lower than N.A., except for China where its 25% lower so the foreign theaters got quite a decent boost. The studio ? Not so much. So a mixed bag when all is said and done.

@JDL - no problem. But just so you know concessions is where most of the money comes for theaters specifically. Now its hard to say as food sales isnt exactly as tracked as box office, but we won't know the benefits of this until we see anything pertaining to end of year total profits.

@Origame - Yes I know that a huge percentage of the profits in N.A. come from concessions but I doubt that that is as true elsewhere.

For one thing outside of the richer parts of Europe I seriously doubt that you can get away with sky high concession prices, especially if the theater can't prevent people from bringing in their own stuff. You could hope to make up for it on volume but tbh I don't think you would get all that close.
