TENET Passes $280 Million At The Global Box Office As THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Enters The Top 5 In The U.S.

Things are still looking grim for movie theaters, with Tenet crawling to the $300 million mark at the global box office. The Empire Strikes Back's 40th anniversary release drew some interest, though...

It was another sluggish weekend at the North American box office, with Tenet earning just $3.4 million at 2,850 locations to take its domestic haul past $41 million after four weeks on release.

Throw in what it made overseas, and Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic has managed to top $280 million worldwide. That's not the sort of performance Warner Bros. was likely hoping for, but it's not too bad all things considered. Ultimately, though, it's hard to imagine the studio not making a loss here.

Disney's Mulan, which has only been released theatrically in China and countries without Disney+, has managed to make $64 million in total thus far after another $3.4 million this weekend.

The past few days also saw the 40th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and that came in at fourth place. Playing in 2,097 theaters, it brought in a total of $908,000. That's a fine result for a movie fans can watch on Disney+, and some clearly wanted to revisit the classic on the big screen.

Experts maintain that visiting movie theaters is unsafe, and there are only really a few big releases set for the coming months: Soul, No Time to Die, and Wonder Woman 1984

We'll keep you guys updated with any further release date changes.

I'm totally for studios re-releasing old classics to keep the theatre industry alive during covid. No costs needed to be recouped and a good chance for us younglings to finally see some of our favourties on the big screen.

Had the pleasure to watch Empire for the first time on the big screen recently. What an experience. Once the classic line was said everybody in the room gasped (ironically ofc) but it was such fun

@dragon316 - the 1997 version but it was still amazing nevertheless. I'm kind of used to the new version, only seen the original one as a kid

@Blergh - had a almost beat for beat same experience when I went and watched! So great!! Saw it in the afternoon on a Friday and I walked in and there were about 15 other people. All by themselves for the most part and seated all apart. But it was cool, we all knew we were there because we were fans and it was so great to see it on the big screen. Once the famous line hit, it was almost like everyone had planned it as we all went “oooooo” or gasped. Followed by a good 10 second chuckle from everyone. It was just a very wholesome experience.

That’s a lot better than I was expecting for Tenet during a pandemic.

Missing TDK in IMAX when I was younger is one of my biggest regrets. Waiting for it to come back. I’m all for bringing back classics

@Supes17

There were actually very few IMAX movie theaters when TDK came out

@regularmovieguy - I have access to a 70mm Imax theater so I have no excuse lol

So you think the studio and Nolan are regretting for being impatient and not waiting it out until 2021? This movie should've been a massive BO hit.

@Mysterion - The Studio = Yes.

Nolan = probably not, as he may see it as a small price to pay to help keep theaters going.

Nice, will most likely hit 300m by the end of the week and likely end its run with around 350, could get to 400 milion if the rest of the US theaters reopen

@LameLuka - yep, those US numbers are really bad and hurting the film. The International numbers are quite decent given the circumstances. Here's hoping it will still have some legs for when more American cinemas open in major markets like California and New York. 350M is realistic and 400M optimistic but doable.

@kitheka - yeah, if and when theaters reopen in the US states they haven't opened yet. Plus WB will keep this movie for as long as they can in theaters

@LameLuka - They should have waited. End of story. Just my opinion, but yeah. Should have waited. This movie would be making 800+ million once theaters opened 100%/people weren't afraid to go to them.

LameLuka - 9/28/2020, 10:27 AM
@LNBfett12 - disagree, they did a good thing releasing it. The rest of the movies that are still scheduled to come out this yet should release and not chicken out
LNBfett12
LNBfett12 - 9/28/2020, 12:26 PM
@LameLuka - I won't blame them for wanting to wait so that their BO can/might be higher. However, to kinda agree with you on the flipside, waiting means that theaters will continue to be empty and that could very well doom them. I don't know, I'm just torn about it all. Personally, I'm not going to a theater any time soon. That's just me though.

@LNBfett12 - here in Albania theaters could be back up by november for No Time To Die (if it stays in that november release). So I plan on doing a double feature with that and Tenet. People here are hungry for movies and are constantly asking for theaters and other stuff to reopen

Wasn't it reported that the operating costs of the theaters actually made it worse for them to reopen? And therefore this push by Nolan to help them, despite it coming from a good place, hurt them even more?

Or did I get fakenews'd...

Are people really that bored to go to the theater to see a movie, which is absolutely a classic and my favorite of all time, that they could just be watching on Disney+ with a solid tv and sound? I love going to the theater, but for this? And now? Ehhh...

How much did this movie cost to make? Because this might be quite good with all things considered.

Solid numbers. Thank you, Nolan!
