TENET Passes $300 Million Worldwide...But Only $45 Million Of That Comes From The U.S.

Tenet has finally managed to limp past the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office, but with only $45 million of that coming from the U.S., it's no wonder studios are nervous about this year...

Tenet reportedly needs to make $500 million at the global box office to break even, but the chances of that happening are slim. With just $2.7 million earned during its sixth weekend at the North American box office, Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic has made only $45.1 million at the domestic box office.

Warner Bros. booked the movie in for a 12-week stint in most theaters. However, the closure of Regal Cinemas is bound to impact that, and it now seems doubtful Tenet will ever reach the projected $55 million many pundits believed would be as good as it gets for the movie during its domestic run.

In the UK, Tenet has made $20.9 million, 26% of what Dunkirk grossed. With Cineworld branches closing in the country, it's unlikely the country will end up contributing more to that cume.

Tenet has now passed $300 million worldwide, and $500 million is still a long way off. With that in mind, it's no great surprise that Warner Bros. and other major studios aren't keen on the idea of releasing major blockbusters in theaters this side of Christmas, so we likely shouldn't expect that to change.

The big surprise in North America this weekend was Disney's re-release of Hocus Pocus; Tenet actually lost Friday to that movie, and it earned a surprising $1.925 million over the weekend.

Do you wish Warner Bros. would just hurry up and release Tenet on PVOD platforms?

They should hold back on all films until this crap virus has passed. Nolan wanted his film out there....well....he got what he deserves. FLOP !

@blitzkreg - I love his movies, but he clearly cared more about the wellbeing of movie theaters than the wellbeing of their audiences. It was arrogant of him to think his movie was enough to save theaters from the pandemic.

@Shroombeast - and it ended up causing the thing he was trying to avoid... he should hit rewind and see where he messed up.

@blitzkreg - sometimes seeing something fail (Tenet in this case) works better than outright saying don't do it. He'll get us with the re-release though

It's ok you don't lose anything if you didn't watch it at theaters. Not really the masterpiece we thought it could be. Just a 'sci-fi' spy movie with a forced love story. Nolan really needs to get off his high horse , leave the big set pieces and all of that grandiose nonsense behind and focus more on the story. Washington and Pattinson really saved this movie from being a bigger flop.

@Nemesis17then - I disagree here. Pattinson outside of Twilight has never been a box office draw and won’t be outside of The Batman, iand I dont mean to sound like a know it all. Just pointing out a pateen. But these days it’s franchise, mainly superhero, or concept, or star plus concept. Rarely ever star. Even Tom Cruise has to lean on MI. Even Denzel and Keanu do great with what their given but we still ain’t talking over the 500 millions. This new Washington was phenomenal and so was Pattinson but they don’t put butts in seats unless it’s sparkly vamps or bat signals, and they ain’t washington. Whether the concept presented in Tenet would’ve put butts in seats under normal circumstances is unknown. A character driven movie with these two guys certainly would not have. It would be Oscar bait or something.

@TheWalkingCuban - I agree with you. What i meant was that their performances made the movie better. I meant flop from the critical response perspective.

@Nemesis17then - ah sorry gotcha, haven’t read many but I got the gist, not his best work, and I agree. Boring til it wasn’t but that’s still inexcusable.

With everything we heard about the financials of this movie, I very much doubt that the break-even point for it was a mere $500m gross.

$500 million at the global box office to break is out of the question but 350M by November is achievable. That's decent considering the circumstances. Good for Nolan sticking to his principles and trying to keep the industry afloat.

Hocus Pocus, what an awesome film.

I'm planning to watch this Halloween on Disney+. :)

@Carnage1991 - This entire month I'm watching a ton of horror themed (or horror like) stuff... Starting with (and current watching) some Anime. Really enjoy this stuff, and to have an entire month to it is great.

I like to call it 'Spooktober' or 'Spookytober' great stuff.

Also to your point, I haven't seen HP in years. Fun stuff, enjoyed it a lot as a kid back then =)

@Beerus - Firstly, nice username and picture. :)

I've also slowly being watching different horror films the past couple of years(mostly the franchises), but have some one-offs to watch too.

This movie was disappointing imo. The central concept of inversion was cool af but the story surrounding it was incredibly weak.

@SnideCut - agreed it was boring except when it wasn’t, no Inception.
