While many have expressed a sense of disinterest in the future of the Terminator franchise, especially after the lackluster response to Terminator Genisys, recent news of series creator James Cameron and Deadpool director Tim Miller collaborating on a new installment with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning made fans curious. And during a private event celebrating the franchise, Cameron made the official announcement that not only is the film happening, but that Linda Hamilton will be reprising her beloved role of Sarah Connor.
"As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return... There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women.”
In addition to producing the new film and crafting the story, which will be a direct sequel to Judgment Day, Cameron has also collaborated with Miller in assembling a writers room to plan a new trilogy of films that can serve as stand-alone films or form an overarching story. A few of the writers said to have participated include David S. Goyer (Man of Steel), Charles Eglee (Dark Angel), and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles).
Cameron also revealed that the plan for the new film is to pass the torch to a new ensemble cast of younger characters who will carry the franchise going forward.
"We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we'll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it."
