SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS Director Responds To Claims The Sequel Is Undergoing A New Round Of Reshoots

Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg has responded to claims the sequel is being retooled in the wake of a release date delay that's seen the movie pushed into 2023. Read on for details...

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a movie that's jumped all over the release calendar. After shooting kicked off last May, the sequel was originally set to arrive in theaters on April 1, 2022. It was then pushed back to this November before slipping all the way to June 2, 2023 (not the greatest idea when those kid actors are very quickly growing up).

Fans were initially pleased when the Shazam! follow-up was brought forward to December 21, later this year, only for the release date to change again when it took Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's March 17, 2023 slot.

Inevitably, some fans have questioned whether there may be some issues with Shazam! Fury of the Gods. In fact, there have been rumblings that the new regime at Warner Bros. Discovery has ordered a fresh round of reshoots. That, however, was recently debunked by director David F. Sandberg.

"I've seen reports that Shazam is being 'retooled' but it's not true. The cut has been locked for quite some time and we're doing final mix, color, and VFX right now," the filmmaker confirmed. "Everyone is happy with the film and we're not going to work longer on it just because of the release date shift."

Explaining that change, Sandberg would go on to say, "They figured Aqauaman's previous date was better for us and that's the reason we moved. Definitely not shooting more."

While disappointing for fans, Shazam! Fury of the Gods' move was what was best for business. The movie would have found itself battling Avatar: The Way of Water, likely crushing its chances of being a box office success (especially as that long-awaited sequel would have priority access to IMAX screens, for example).

“Retooled” sounds so wrong to me

@GirshwinDavies - they're adding a tool to the cast. Think that obnoxious stereotype of a guy character from she hulk and somehow make him worse. That's who they're bringing in.

I get wanting to avoid Avatar but March just sounds like a murder’s row of movies between this, Dungeons and Dragons, Haunted Mansion, John Wick and Scream and there is just typically more eyeballs to go around in December than March. They’re definitely not all going for the exact same market so hopefully it can do great. But I’m not sure I would have moved it out of December to an already crowded month.

A release date that is more than four years after the wonderful first movie, with alter-ego protagonists that are now college-aged. This is typical Warner Bros/DC shooting itself in the foot -- destroying the value it builds. I assume the third movie will have to recast Billy Batson, Freddy Freeman, Mary, Darla et al because they will all be in their early 20s by the time they shoot in 2023 or 2024.

@GeneralZod - I don't think there will be a 3rd movie of this.

@GeneralZod - Okay, but it's been 6 years between Dr. Strange and Dr. Strange 2.
Yes, I know that he's been seen in the intervening 6 years, but I'd say No Way Home and MOM actually tarnished the character. He's become nothing but a glorified babysitter.

Asher Angel will be older than Zachary Levi by the time the 3rd movie comes out

It all depends on what the new CEO wants to do. Sandberg, you're at his mercy 😬

Just like with Stranger Things, I can't buy kids playing characters 5 years younger than their own age. So, if they make a threqueel, I really think they should do a time jump. Unless all the kids (except Darla) are in college already, and otherwise I think that might be worth a reshoot already.

@bkmeijer1 - At least Stranger Things' production team knew time was against them and cranked out the first 3 seasons in relative short order. This 4+ year wait for Shazam is ridiculous, and frankly unacceptable from a profit-making perspective. Then again, big changes are underway at WB/DC; a four-year wait for a sequel off a successful first film is not happening again.

@GeneralZod - unfortunately this is the problem with the character of Shazam in live action. Kids grow up, so they either have recast or follow Billy through college which kind of defeats the purpose of Shazam: a kid being bestowed the powers of a superhuman whilst becoming an adult.

@GeneralZod - I do think we can cut them some slack. Atleast a year is due to the pandemic, and I think three years is a fair time between sequels.

I do think that if a threequel happens, it should be sooner than later. But if it's Shazam vs. Black Adam anyway, I think Johnson will make sure of that.

@bkmeijer1 - I think they address Billy's age concern in Shazam 2. It's been two years since he got the power of Shazam. He's on the cusp of manhood and doesn't know what will happen with his powers when he turns 18.

They'll probably just carry on with the characters as they mature into adulthood.

@Battabingg - I think they will too. Enough media already explored the kid Billy/Shazam dynamic, so I think adolescent Billy/Shazam and later adult Billy dynamics are interesting to explore too

"We're cutting out a certain cameo and trying to fit some of the footage we originally left on the floor to make up the time." I hope I hope I hope.

Ponysmasher should run DCEU.
He is just perfect for it from a creative stand point, sense of humor and his ability to navigate social media when dealing with all the hit pieces put out on WB/DC properties … which is a small business unto itself.
