Alex Kurtzman On THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Sequel; Praises Andrew Garfield's Performance

Alex Kurtzman, who was one of the writers on J.J. Abrams' Star Trek along Roberto Orci, as well as being a co-creator, writer and executive producer of Fox's science fiction television series Fringe, talked to Movies.com about The Amazing Spider-Man. It was recently revealed that both Orci and Kurtzman will pen the upcoming sequel, which is set for May 2, 2014 release. The interview below contains some spoilers, so if you don't want to know anything, stop reading now.

When asked about the sequel, and it seems that folks over at Movies.com have seen The Amazing Spider-Man, they asked if Norman Osborn will be a potential villain, to which Kurtzman replied:

"I can’t really talk about it. What I can say is how amazingly impressed I was with what they did. I was a huge fan of Sam [Raimi’s] movies. My God. When you look back at the superhero movies of the last decade, there’s no question that Spider-Man was right there at the top."

On what attracted him and Orci to write the sequel, he said:

"So it’s a really tall order to jump in and sort of come up with a new version. But I think what Marc and Andrew [Garfield] did, what Emma [Stone] and all of the producers did, was to ground the world in a reality that felt so honest and authentic. And I think both Bob and I responded to that instantly.

By the way, it’s immediately apparent in frame one of that movie that that’s what they’re doing. And I think they love that, because it immediately raises all sorts of questions about, “How do you exist as a superhero in the real world?” That felt really exciting to us."

He also praised Andrew Garfield's performance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy:

"Andrew nailed it 1,000 percent. And so did Emma. Their relationship on screen is so electric. The first time I saw the movie, as a real testament to this movie, you want to watch it just as much – if not more – when Spider-Man isn’t on screen because the two of them are so magnetic.

We’re in the middle of writing the next one. We’re having an absolute ball. But it’s all because of the amazing work everybody did in the first movie."

Starring Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Sally Field and Martin Sheen, The Amazing Spider-Man is set to hit theatres on July 3rd, 2012.

I just really hope they build up to a venom eventually (albeit do it correctly, not like lizard). I know a lot of people here didn't like GG in Spider-Man 1 but I loved it. Keep it going with new villains. Give us mysterio or electro or vulture in the next film. Maybe give us ALL these villains in a very specialized plot line.

Orci and Kurtzman I find are fairly inconsistent writers, while they have written great stuff like Fringe and Star Trek 11 they were also responsible for Transformers 2 and Cowboys and Aliens. But I'm remaining optimistic as the good work they've done outweighs the bad.

I think the second one should be Kraven. Kraven hears about a giant lizard and a spider man roaming around the big city... he will feel right at home.

then set up Green Goblin and kill Gwen in the third movie.

Fingers crossed: Osborn introduced in sequel. Electro or Mysterio for villain. Mysterio might work well in a potential sequel. Idea: Say Captain Stacy dies in "Amazing", or rather, Gwen and Peter part ways, Mysterio could use his illusions to haunt Peter making him see things that aren't there. Sounds cool to me. I'd love to see that.

There is a clip at the end of a trailer if I recall where it has connors and another figure saying "did you tell the boy about his father?" Maybe that was Norman?

no more goblins !!! god they made 3 and used him in 2! enough ! you know what we need is some sinister six action !!! think about how wicked that could be with the right writers and director !! or atleast use one of the others than doc ock so we can get some new villains ! god theres so many better ones that they havent even tapped yet , Ive been a comic geek for my whole life and if I seen that and it was nothing like the first 3 I could die a happy man, thats all.

With these two penning the script i can see either mysterio, scorpion, or green goblin next. Something off the wall to say the least ^_^
