Dane DeHaan On Harry Osborn In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Dane DeHaan On Harry Osborn In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Actor Dane DeHaan talks portraying Harry Osborn in Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man sequel. Plus, a rumor concerning Sony, Josh Trank, Venom and expanding the Spider-Man universe.

Actor Dane DeHaan is currently doing promo interviews for The Place Beyond The Pines but naturally, he's fielding a number of questions about The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Below, he talks about how he's already had a number of roles that dealt with different father-son dynamics, avoids any comparison to James Franco and talks about his love for comic book movies. And stick around for a rumor about DeHaan and Sony's plans for Venom.

DeHaan comments on the frequency of his roles dealing with various takes on the father-son dynamic.

"First of all, 'Chronicle' was about a kid with an abusive fathe. 'Place Beyond the Pines' is about a kid who doesn't know who his father is, and they're very different relationships. Obviously with Harry Osborn, the privilege of it is another dynamic. The relationship Harry has with Norman is a different dynamic. Every son has a relationship with their father, whether that father is there or not, and that always has an effect on the person whether they admit it or not. There's a lot of different ways those relationships are complicated."

Dane is hesitant to touch on anything James Franco and Sam Raimi did with Harry Osborn in the original trilogy.

"I dunno, I mean Franco did his thing, I'll do my thing."

The actor admits that he was never much of a comic book fan growing up. However is a huge fan of the comic book movie genre.

"I don't think you have to be a fan of something to do the job. I think ultimately it's important that I'm familiar with past takes on the Osborn story, more for like common, know-it-all 'cause it's stuff I should know. My job as an actor is the same job, whether it’s a comic book movie or a gritty Derek Cianfrance drama, or a 'Chronicle,' or a 'Lawless,' which is to take a character and, for lack of better word, to breathe life into it. I'm a fan of acting!.... I don't read comic books, but I love the last Batman franchise, Sam Raimi's second 'Spider-Man' was pretty sick. The first 'Iron Man' was really great, I couldn't wait for 'Captain America' to come out. Those are my guilty pleasures for sure."

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Harry Osborn Dane DeHaan

Rumor time. An anonymous source has told be that earlier rumblings concerning Dane DeHaan are true, the actor does indeed factor into Sony's plans for Venom. DeHaan getting the role of Harry Osborn in Marc Webb's Spider-Man was actually Sony's decision (remember those additional actors testing for the role after Dane DeHaan?). The studio wants DeHaan and director Josh Trank to recapture some of their Chronicle magic in a Venom spinoff. To pave the way for that to happen and avoid confusion among comic book fans, Chris Zylka, Flash Thompson in the first Amazing Spider-Man will not be returning in the sequel. The seeds for Venom will be first planted in the sequel as Peter Parker will find the experimental serum that his father and Eddie Brock Sr. developed which is exactly how it plays out in the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man. However, unlike that story, it will be Harry Osborn who eventually becomes Venom and will eventually get a solo spinoff. DeHaan's not working out so fanatically and increasing his bulk for nothing! Look for Eddie Brock Jr. to show up in THAT film, not The Amazing Spider-Man sequel. Also, Venom is not the only character currently being looked at for a solo spinoff as Sony is looking to build their own cinematic universe around Spider-Man. Keep all this in the rumor bin for now but it all sounds plausible as a potential secondary plot to the main conflict between Peter, Electro, Rhino and whoever else has grievances with Spidey.

Correct me if Im wrong but isnt Harry Vemon in the Ultimate series? So chances are they could be setiing up for a vemon/green goblin team up for part 3 along with the death of gwen stacy.

How is this movie going to fit rhino, electro, MJ, both Osborns, and some gwen/peter romance?

Why isnt Flash T. returning?

would have been interesting to see the dynamics between him and Peter this time

@mattbo no he was never venom in the ultimate comics. He was venom in the ultimate spider-man cartoon which has little to no resemblance to the ultimate comics and it sucks as we all know.

Harry Osborn was never Venom. SCREW THAT. I'd rather have Topher Grace play Ultimate Eddie Brock/Venom before they [frick] it up again

Dude, that rumor actually sounds great..I. would love to see a spider spin off and have a beefed out eddie brock jr show up in the venom film out for revenge or somethin.

I particularly LOVE this new spider-man universe..I think TASM2 is finally gonna be ths spider man film we have always wanted..

Lmao, if this is true then Marvel will have three cinematic universe's while DC has yet to do anything.

Ultimate Venom would be easier to explain in this new film series, it could be what Peter's dad was working on, or one of many things.

@Rob2814

Webb did direct a great Rom-Com but TASM itself had too much going on and characters weren't used effectively.

The core characters we had were Peter, Gwen, Flash, Ben , May, Connors, Ratha and Captain Stacey. Of those characters Ratha and May were useless there was nothing interesting about them and they hardly had any screen time. Flash developed as a character off screen so that sucked as well.

Ratha, Ben and Connors are gone but now we get Harry, Norman, Electro, Rhino, and Mary J. The love story has to balance with the importance of the Osborns the conflict with the villains and the growth of Peter and the established characters.

Nolan improved on his craft with the Prestige before jumping back in TDK. I like that we are getting a new Spider-Man movie soon but I also wish Webb had more time to grow as a director.

Dane DeHaan is right though you don't need to be a fan to do your job. Its cool if you are one but talent achieves more just ask Frank "Spirit" Millar or Nic "SOV" Cage. Glad to see he didnt fall for the fanboy trap and claim he's been fan since forever.

Harry is Venom in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.

It does make a little sense, considering a) Ultimate Eddie Brock had father issues, b) he has close proximity to Oscorp's secrets, and c) gives Peter more drama to work with.

Plus, Dane DeHaan is awesome. Go with it.

He's Venom, guys. Sony won't ever make two Green Goblins, and so Harry as a rival has to factor in some how. Modern Goblin is Abomination MII essentially. And to have Goblin after Lizard (Abomination with a tail - Wow Sony is original...) and then another Goblin would be simply ridiculous. And so, for movie universes, characters are collided and warped. Just like Raimi's Franco Goblin, DeHaan will need to be different. A lot different. Making Harry Venom isn't so much a problem for me, other than the fact that he looks half Andrew Garfield's age. It'll come across like a child chasing a teenager above the streets of New York, dressed in pajamas. It's the idea of a spin-off that irks me. If Marvel are reluctant to do another Hulk movie, I see very little success for Sony with a Venom movie. Is he a hero, or is he a monster? He's both and neither, which would make the dynamic painful on screen, unless it's designed to be a horror, but then the 5 year old DeHaan wouldn't be in it, as that would look stupid. I think Sony should avoid Venom entirely. Raimi's made the character into a joke, and once again in this context Venom will look silly. You can run a character into the ground I think, and Venom could very easily become an annoying Bane sort of character. Eddie Brock in his brut form was a cool Spider-Man villain because he was Spider-Man's Flash Thompson. Brock bullied Spider-Man and was his perfect foil - big and stupid. Toby Maguire and Topher Grace could have been the same person, so it was silly. And the same could be said of Garfield and DeHaan, but at at least with Osborn being Venom you won't have to worry about a snowboarder Goblin. I say make Eddie Brock an oversized, blonde idiot who is jealous of Spider-Man because he's smarter, and a hero. And then make Harry more like his father without the Goblin. Harry doesn't need to become a super villain upon Norman's downfall. Harry can just be a villain. Continuing Norman's legacy without the mistake of compromising himself by becoming tailles-Lizard, or Abomination MII and sacrificing all he knows and owns. He should become more like Smythe than an active adversary. Norman has a plan in Ultimate Spider-Man that is prevented by him becoming Goblin. How about Harry continuing the grand plans, and instead of becoming an adversary himself should produce all the many, many cool villains from the comic series. A new Norman Goblin I'd tolerate, but not two Goblins and Venom again, if the latter can be avoided.
Foxpaw
Foxpaw - 3/11/2013, 5:47 AM
Pretty much what I'm saying is that repeat villains in reboots is annoying. Osborn as Goblin could be more different this time around, as he would be Abomination-like. No conventional Green Goblin 1 & 2 and Doc Oc, no Venom or Sandman. Webb has done well to bring in Lizard, Electro and possibly Rhino, and to change Goblin's conditions, but there is no need to do Green Goblin 2, Venom or Sandman. There's Mysterio, Kraven, Smythe, Vulture, Man-Wolf, Doppelgänger, etc. And Venom should never be considered without the possibility of Carnage following up.

You know, I'm glad I was with you guys when we all started to realize that there's a HUGE possibility that Harry could become Venom, but chances are that Venom won't even appear. Or chances are Venom could be something else other than a symbiote. The series has already used a lot of the Ultimate Venom storyline in Amazing Spider-Man, and there's a big possibility that Harry is going to be somewhat like Eddie Osborn, actually a big possibility. But Marc Webb personally knows that's just too much of a stupid idea to do. All he's doing is building up Green Goblin in another, more interesting way. People consider Green Goblin to be the prime Spider-Man villain. Then Venom came out of nowhere and took the spot quite forcefully.

Spider-Man 1 did the Green Goblin story perfectly, so let Marc Webb change it up a little bit. The Venom story was great in Ultimate Spider-Man and had a great backstory to it and it could easily mold into a Green Goblin story.

But hey you know, this is just the second movie. There's SO MUCH MORE to this universe we don't know about yet. Maybe there is a Venom formula, maybe there isn't. Maybe Osborn is using Peter as Spider-Man to find the hidden cure that he thinks Richard found out and took it away from Peter, or that Peter is the link to the cure himself. Remember the Venom suit is supposed to be a cancer curing suit.

osborn venom IS LAME!!!!! its bad enough there is a flash venom, Just make it eddie Brock for [frick] sakes. OSorn should be and only be A goblin . I can see the symbiote jumping from host to host but to make the full bond with osborn would be really really bad

It makes sense not to bring Flash back. His story sort of resolved itself when he basically accepted Peter at the end of the film. What would his character do in the second film? Just be his buddy?

OK, so I loved TASM. But Harry better not become Venom in the sequel. They better not [frick] around with the characters like that. Flash should at least be in the sequel for continuity's sake, even if he has a much smaller role - or would it just be a case of Chuck Cunningham Syndrome (where a character disappears from a TV or movie series with no explanation or acknowledgement of their existence)?

One of the most important aspects of Harry as a character is his negative relationship with his father, and one of his most important storylines is the one where, due to his trauma, he becomes the second Green Goblin and dies of a drug overdose. Now, of course the drug stuff will be left out since they'd be aiming for a PG-13(US)/12A(UK) rating, but the trauma and following in his father's footsteps and becoming the second Green Goblin is very important.

Harry Osborn should not become Venom. Eddie Brock needs to at least be treated with some respect as Venom on screen before anyone else dons the suit.

And how can Sony make a Spider-Man cinematic universe? They'd either have to do a Clone Saga movie, and no one wants that, or they'd have to be really lazy and just have the spiders bite a bunch of other people as well. The only characters apart from Spider-Man and Venom who could have their own movies are Toxin (meaning a spin-off of a spin-off revolving around an obscure character), Ben Reilly or Kaine as Scarlet Spider (which would probably necessitate the Clone Saga being adapted) or Miles Morales (given a new superhero name since this'd presumably be alongside the mainstream, Peter Parker Spider-Man movies) which would necessitate another character randomly being bitten by a spider, which is pretty lazy. I suppose they could also do Ben Reilly and Kaine as random people also bitten by the spiders, which I guess would be better than the clone saga... the point is, there's no point in expanding a Spider-Man universe on film.

I think Webbs Spidey has a lot of potential, the casting has been perfect so far. Hopefully Sony can get out of the way and let him make a good movie. I don't want to see Harry as venom, Brock is Venom and that's the way it should be. This sounds like the studio is getting involved again and that's bad news.

I don't think I like this take on Spidey. The charm of Peter Parker was that he was just an ordinary kid who had an extraordinary event that made him super and gave him "great responsibilities" when using his power. But here, his parents were not ordinary, his life wasn't ordinary, and what happened to him was perhaps some great big secret conspiracy or something and he has a mysterious void in his life he has to fill ... he's essentially Tony Stark without the money.
