Donald Glover On Being An "Easter Egg" In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Back when Sony Pictures were looking to cast their Peter Parker, Donald Glover was one of the names which came up through a campaign on Twitter. Despite not landing the role, there is an easter egg featuring the actor in the reboot and here's what he had to say about that.

Donald Glover's race made him a controversial casting choice with fans when he decided to campaign for the coveted role of Peter Parker. However, both director Marc Webb and star Andrew Garfield have since expressed admiration for the star of Community, with the former recently letting slip the fact that they had included an easter egg featuring the actor somewhere in Peter Parker's bedroom.


Talking to MTV Splash Page, the actor said: "I was pretty aware of the Easter egg that Marc Webb put in there because he asked me—I guess when they were filming it—if it was ok to do it. I was like 'Sure.' For some reason, I didn't think they needed to ask my permission, but I guess they did. So there's some stuff in Spider-Man's bedroom that's reflective of his musical or television taste."

While he may know something about the easter egg, he wasn't willing to let slip any specifics. ""I don't know. I'm not allowed to talk about it. I had to sign some stuff, but I think it's pretty dope." He jokingly added, "He has all the '30 Rock' DVDs, and he has my name circled on all of them. It's like a 'Cape Fear' thing where he's doing pushups and stuff and it's kind of like he's out for me."

A small scene where he is called Miles would be cool, never has to lead to anything, as I am sure we will never get his version on the big screen anyways, but be a nice nod to the fans of the new character

I was in full support of this idea, when it first came out. For a black Spider-Man (awesome) AND that it would be played by Donald Glover.

Dumbest idea ever. lol anytime i hear of a white actor playing a black man or an asian man you hear the term "white washing" how come when it happens the other way around it's just white people being ignorant.

I thought it was already confirmed in another article on here that he was on a poster in Peter Parker's bedroom? I could've sworn I read that somewhere. Oh and I don't think the actor is crying about not getting the part, he's just commenting on a [frick]ing cameo... jeez.

The character of Shaft is grounded in a subculture of the black community, so it's not necessarily a matter of skin color as it is a representation (and exploitation) of the black community.

Same thing for T'Challa (Black Panther) who is from an indigenous AFRICAN tribe. So, yeah, casting Jason Statham would be weird as holy [frick].

ON THE OTHER HAND, James Bond, Wonder Woman, AND Spider-Man are NOT characters that are significant for their racial identity. For example, Spider-Man's background is not dependent on his race, only that he lives in New York.

And, as every informed person knows, New York is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnic groups.

Hippolyta and Zeus (mythological characters) are only white because their depictions have ever only been white. Zeus and Hippolyta were never real people, who really existed as two, WHITE, mediterranean-based individuals, and, had they been, they'd have probably been on the more olive skinned side anyway.

Again, Peter Parker doesn't have to be black, but making him black would not be the end of the world either. It would have been awesome, in a wholly unique and different way.

Why, necessarily?

Like, is this an ascetic thing (the character's only appealing when they're white or something)? And, if so, do you find your own race so visually obstructive/distracting that it, somehow, threatens the essence of the character?

Also...why does it only work for Nick Fury?

This is, just, strange...of a lot of you.

Why is someone's race so important that it makes or breaks your idea of a character? Because It's always been that way?

So had slavery (any, in many places, still is) for centuries.

Not a very good reason, in my opinion.

Yikes!...I'd hate to see how unchanged the world would be if comic book readers offended by a mere race change were running things. *shivers*

If a superhero wears a mask all the time, perhaps that's why it's easier for people to identify with them of any color and dream of fighting crime some day. Comic book movies are today's form of greek mythology and having something greater to look up to. I've loved almost all incarnations of spiderman I've seen and would have no problem with another version with Donald Glover or another race. It is strange that nerdy fanboys that are typically outcasts in some form are also racist. They of all people should understand how crappy it feels to be called names. Just saying..

...Since when does "change" equal "fix"? Those two words aren't entirely synonymous with each other.

It has nothing to do with slavery itself, but, in 19th century America, one of the many beliefs behind the continuation of slavery was that it'd had always been that way. So why change it?

That's not a good mindset for anything, whether it be something extremely serious, like slavery, or something as silly as a comic book character.

I didn't support him to play Spider-Man, but I still think that's a nice touch.

If he wants to play a superhero, he should play Static. He has the right personality to be a great Virgil Hawkins/Static.

What is wrong with white being white and black being black? This progressive bullsh*t drives me fuc*ing crazy!

spiderman is white. if he wasnt than he would not be.

james bond is white. if he wasnt than he would not be.

black panther is black. if he wasnt than he would not be.

They maybe just be characters in comics and books and movies. but they were made white or black by the people that created them. to say you cant change the race of shaft or black panther because of black/african culture but you can peter parker or wonder woman because they are white or greek is...just stupid.

It's simple, we want to see the characters as they were made, or at least as we've known them for the most time.

It's not a matter o racism, we just want their appearance to be respected.

Gosh, we don't even like when they make changes on their costumes..
