Has The Die Been Cast On Marc Webb And THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Sequel?

Looking back at the shooting schedule for The Amazing Spider-Man and the recent announcement that Marc Webb has signed on to another film, is the writing on the wall for the Spider-Man sequel?

The original filming schedule for The Amazing Spider-Man called for 90 days and kicked off December 6th, 2010.

However, that 3-month shoot turned into a 6-month shoot, wrapping in mid-May 2011.

Inevitable reshoots occurred, kicking off in New York in November 2011 and finally wrapping in Los Angeles on December 2011.

Of course the heavily CGI'd Lizard and web-slinging scenes required editing and VFX treatment, meaning that the film was not officially complete until May 20, 2012.



Tallying all this up, it took 1 yr 5 months and 14 days to complete The Amazing Spider-Man once cameras started rolling. Sony began working on the script for the sequel before filming was even complete and has set May 02, 2014 for its release. Applying the same amount of time it took to make the first Spider-Man film, Sony would need to start shooting on November 18,2012 to put a film out by May 2014 and that's taking the entire film process up to opening day. Realistically, shooting would need to start sometime in September if you take into account the schedule requirements of the first film. Deadline reported earlier this year that Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci were writing the sequel and as an afterthought, filming was scheduled to commence in 'first quarter 2013.' That puts production fairly close to my hypothesis but also raises a bit of a red flag; I'm thinking Sony is probably banking on not having an additional 3 months of shooting and probably won't choose a villain that requires so much CGI this time around but history tends to have a way of repeating itself.

How does Marc Webb factor into all this? News just broke that he's getting set to direct The Only Living Boy in New York, starring Spider-Man runner-up Logan Lerman. If Webb is indeed on board for The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, in about 4-6 months, he's going to be unavailable until May 2014 so how could he possibly be directing another film? The synopsis for Only Living Boy is more inline with previous projects from Webb and is a film that could potentially land at Fox which has Webb on the hook for at least 1 more film.

Expect news to shake out one way or the other as pre-production on The Amazing Spider-Man sequel is only a few months away. We'll either be hearing soon that The Only Living Boy is part of that 2 picture deal with Fox that Webb must accept in order to film the Spider-Man sequel or that The Only Living Boy is Webb's next film and someone else is directing Spider-Man.

Good! Webb is too good of a director for the ass-clowns at Sony. I like TASM but what Sony did to Webb's vision was detestable and I have zero interest in the sequel!

The sequel just needs to focus on two topics: Peters life in school, and life as spiderman. He did too much in this film, tried to look for uncle bens killer which he failed to do, trying to find out about his parents, dealing with Gwen and her dad, and fighting the lizard.

Umm, yeah, no. VFX shots are almost always finished very close to film's release date. Not sure what's with being surprised about that. Second, who says they need to start filming this November? That was for the first film, they started early. Just because it happened with ASM, doesn't mean they will follow the same schedule with the sequel. ASM 2 is set for summer 2014, meaning they could start shooting in April/May 2013. Star Trek 2 did that, Avengers and TDKR too. All big films.

Only 2 ways Columbia/Sony will give up Spider-Man to Marvel:

1 - WE don't watch The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, nor buy nor download the Amazing Spider-Man

2 - Kevin Feige creates a lucrative position for Avi Arad . . . Arad is the example of selfish & entrenched studio management & he makes millions off of the Sony Spidey flicks as "Executive Producer".

Ohh boy. Not good, not good. I hope TASM 2 gets to be as great, if not better, than TASM 1. But it's not looking that way.

Marc Webb created the universe, he better be aware of the responsibility he has to continue it. I have a scary feeling that this whole project is going to need to be rushed, and films don't ever come out too well when they're rushed...

I also agree that every studio that has marvel movie rights should sell the back to Marvel Studios!

I really liked TASM, and I think since they've probably wrinkled out the kinks (CGI software developed, shooting techniques perfected) is should come along much quicker than the first.

I think it'll be great. Have it wrap up the Uncle Ben's killer subplot, more Green Goblin hints (I think they should wait for the third for Gobby and Gwen's death) have Electro, Mysterio or Scorpion (or any combo of two) as the villain. Just no Kraven. I don't not see the appeal for Kraven.

If Marvel has the rights back to EVERY one of their movies, you wont see movies for them for at least 3 to 4 years, if that soon. You guys should be happy Sony made such a good got damn reboot. TASM was amazing...pun intended. Marvel have their hands full. You're already going to have to wait forever for a Daredevil reboot now. Don't be stupid. Continue the franchise at Sony, pray it turns out as good as the last, and just enjoy the movies. You don't know shit about the movie making process, so your complaints and demands just sound ignorant.

Well, if they would have cast someone younger for a high schooler, they wouldn't be so rushed to complete the next couple of films. TOSM was a disappointment for me...just okay and not amazing, so I don't expect much from the next one.

I agree with Ripynt but I wouldn't mind if MS got the rights back but I wanna see this trilogy finish before that happens.

That's not indiewire is reporting at all. Here is what they are saying:

Of course, Webb is still a contender to direct "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (though it seems there are a lot of contract stuff and other issues to work out) and he's got a handful of other possibilities -- "Age of Rage," "Just Another Love Story," "Jesus Christ Superstar" -- looming in the background, but this seems like it would be a return to the kind of smaller scale, youthful story he made his name on. So we'll see how this develops, but it's certainly one that fits into his wheelhouse quite nicely.


He NEEDS to come back in my opinion. He is a big part of what made The Amazing Spider-Man one of my favorite CBMs ever.

Ya TASM2 has a lot of potential the universe was set up nicely, one of the reasons some people disliked it was cause of the orgin and that's it. Well now it's gonna be new!!!!
