The original
filming schedule for The Amazing Spider-Man called for 90 days and kicked off
December 6th, 2010.
However, that 3-month shoot turned into a 6-month shoot,
wrapping in mid-May 2011.
Inevitable reshoots occurred, kicking off in New York in
November 2011 and finally wrapping in Los Angeles on
December 2011.
Of course the heavily CGI'd Lizard and web-slinging scenes required editing and VFX treatment, meaning that the film was not officially complete until May 20, 2012.
Tallying all this up, it took 1 yr 5 months and 14 days to complete The Amazing Spider-Man once cameras started rolling. Sony began working on the script for the sequel before filming was even complete and has set May 02, 2014 for its release. Applying the same amount of time it took to make the first Spider-Man film, Sony would need to start shooting on November 18,2012 to put a film out by May 2014 and that's taking the entire film process up to opening day. Realistically, shooting would need to start sometime in September if you take into account the schedule requirements of the first film.
Deadline reported earlier this year that Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci were writing the sequel and as an afterthought, filming was scheduled to commence in 'first quarter 2013.' That puts production fairly close to my hypothesis but also raises a bit of a red flag; I'm thinking Sony is probably banking on not having an additional 3 months of shooting and probably won't choose a villain that requires so much CGI this time around but history tends to have a way of repeating itself.
How does Marc Webb factor into all this?
News just broke that he's getting set to direct
The Only Living Boy in New York, starring
Spider-Man runner-up Logan Lerman. If Webb is indeed on board for The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, in about 4-6 months, he's going to be unavailable until May 2014 so how could he possibly be directing another film? The synopsis for Only Living Boy is more inline with previous projects from Webb and is a film that could potentially land at Fox which has
Webb on the hook for at least 1 more film.
Expect news to shake out one way or the other as pre-production on The Amazing Spider-Man sequel is only a few months away. We'll either be hearing soon that The Only Living Boy is part of that
2 picture deal with Fox that Webb must accept in order to film the Spider-Man sequel or that The Only Living Boy is Webb's next film and someone else is directing Spider-Man.
