SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Director Jon Watts Reveals Why Certain Scenes From The Trailers Were Cut

There are quite a few scenes in the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers missing from the movie, including a key sequence with Iron Man. Now, director Jon Watts explains why those failed to make the final cut.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers have been criticised for showing off too much from the reboot but there are still plenty of surprises in store. However, there are some moments from those which didn't make it into the movie and director Jon Watts has now elaborated on why they were dropped.

First up is the shot of The Vulture descending towards the camera in the atrium of a hotel and second is the now very familiar moment where Spider-Man and Iron Man swoop through Queens together.

"The hotel atrium shot was originally created for Comic-Con, for like a sizzle reel before we had really shot anything; we had shot like two weeks of footage or something. That was never meant to be in the movie. But I did use that angle for Vulture’s reveal at the beginning of the movie; Vulture’s hovering, swooping towards the camera like that. I used that shot, it’s just no longer in an Atlanta hotel atrium. And the shot of [Spider-Man and Iron Man] in Queens, that was never in the movie."

Asked to elaborate on why that scene wasn't included in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Watts added: "I think what happened was in the very first trailer they wanted a shot of Spider-Man and Iron Man flying together. And they were going to use something from the Staten Island Ferry [scene], but it just didn’t look that great — the background plate, because the Staten Island terminal is a very simple building. It almost looks like an unrendered 3D object. So I think I was like ‘Let’s just put them in Queens. Let’s use that as a backdrop.’ Because we couldn’t just create a whole new shot, so let’s just use one of these shots of the subway; put them in there. I feel a little weird that there’s a shot in the trailer that’s not in the movie at all, but it’s a cool shot. It’s funny, I forgot that we did that."

It makes sense that Marvel and Sony would want to include a shot of the two heroes together and it's a scene which really emphasised the excitement surrounding Spider-Man's presence in the MCU.

Spider-Man and Iron Man do, however, share plenty of moments but none quite as memorable looking as that one. What do you guys think of these changes? Share your thoughts on that in the usual place!

studios are doing it from time to time. cut scenes and shit that were in the trailers and teasers

can understand it from marketing and editing point of view (the teaser need to be shown to audience and the marketing team must create the teaser/trailer from the scenes that studio delivered. some of those scenes could be cut from final version of the film so it could be better edited)

That final swing seemed trailer-ish anyway. Like it never was supposed to be in the film. But it's cool.

Having scenes intended to be in the movie and then not making the cut is one thing, but making scenes just for the trailer that were never intended for the movie is flat out false advertisement, and I'm willing to bet it was sonys doing, and I'm sorry if this seems whiny but that's really [frick]ing scummy. [frick] them for doing that. Even if it did get buts in seats.
