SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Eyeing $30M-$40M Opening; Secures China Release Date

The pre-release buzz for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been exceedingly positive, possibly even Oscar-caliber, and based on early tracking, the good vibes could reseult in a stellar launch weekend.

While Warner Bros.' Aquaman may be the big-ticket comic book movie of the holiday season, it's Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that's shaping up to be the superhero adventure fans should be looking out for this December and based on some early buzz from The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit and Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro, this Spidey-centric outing could one of this year's biggest and best films - possibly even Oscar-worthy.

Deadline also reports that early tracking suggests Into the Spider-Verse will take aim at a $30 million-plus opening weekend, which would be a solid start for the animated feature, but depending how much momentum it can build between now and December 14th, that figure could jump up to at least $40 million, possibly even higher. THR is a little more conservative with their estimate, predicting an opening in the $28 million to $35 million range.

On another note, Variety has confirmed that Sony Pictures has successfully secured a China release date for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It will open in the Middle Kingdom on December 21st.

With those projections, it would easily top Warner Bros.' TMNT, a fellow animated superhero movie that bowed to $24.2 million back in 2007 and ultimately finished its run with $95.6 million worldwide ($54.1M domestic; $41.4M foreign). However, it looks like it'll likely fall well short of The LEGO Batman Movie's $53 million opening ($311.9M worldwide total) to become the biggest debut for an animated superhero movie based on a comic book ever, although that's subject to change. The film's performance in China could also go a long way in determining whether it has a legitimate shot at potentially becoming the highest-grossing animated superhero movie based on a comic book ever.

This film opening so much lower than Venom hurts my heart

Hope it has great legs because THIS seems to be the type of Spidey movie Sony can do well. We really need more animated CBMs after this, TMNT and BH6

Good! We need more animated CBMs to hit the big screen. I really wish we could get another DC Movie on The Silver Screen.

@JoeMomma29 - I would really like something like an animated JSA movie... I miss Alan Scott hard, and Black Adam could use some build up and media attention before his solo.

@JoeMomma29 - I think they really do a great job with the TV animations and think that they would look great on the big screen.

@LaserKing - I was excited to see Killing Joke on the big screen....such a let down. WB does a solid job on animation, though they have had some misses lately.

@JoeMomma29 - I would rather watch a DC cartoon over other brands. I really like the feel of them more than anything. They seem to be able to make them more.....fantastical. Not sure if that is the right word.
