Spiderman

ProtoGoblin
When it was first revealed that the talented thespian, Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire) was cast in The Amazing Spider-Man and that he would play a scientist named Van Atter fans immediately made the connection to Proto-Goblin [known in Marvel Comics as Van Adder]. However, recently Sony revealed that Khan's character would be renamed Dr. Rath and the actor himself has stated that his only condition for joining the cast was that he would not play a masked villain or a creature. However, in a subsequent interview, Khan did reveal that he would indeed be playing a pivotol villain in the film [I'm assuming just not a masked one]. Now, in a more recent interview, Khan briefly touched on The Amazing Spider-Man and has a quote that quizzically seems to contradict one of his prior statements.

On his work in The Amazing Spider-Man:

Khan: "It was wonderful working with Marc Webb in the film. He is a fabulous director. Adapting a costume was not difficult but the way he approached me, the respect he showered on me is very rarely seen".

Again, previously Khan stated that he did not want to play a masked villain or a creature, so many assumed that Proto-Goblin was out. Furthermore Sony changed his character's name to Dr. Ratha, maybe to throw observant fans off track? However, Khan has revealed that he will indeed be a villain and now that he might have a costume? Granted, he could be referencing some other aspect of the film, but the placement and timing leads me to believe that he's referring to his own costume. Also, the initial denial from Khan was rather odd, why speak out against playing a creature or masked villain unless that was Sony's initial request?

My best guess is that Khan was approached to play Proto-Goblin and Khan, as most actors would [see Captain America sans his helmet in most of the The Avengers footage seen thus far], responded that he did not want to have his face covered-up on screen. If I was a betting man, I'd say the "Proto-Goblin" character was retooled per Khan's request and that Sony changed the character's name because they've strayed so far from the characters comic book origin. I'd also place a second wager on the notion that Khan's character, who works at OSCORP, will probably engage in work that will lead to a Nomran Osborn/Green Goblin appearance in a sequel.

The Amazing Spider-Man is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Marc Webb, based on the comic book of the same name and starring Andrew Garfield as the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film that portrays Spider-Man in film and is a reboot of the film series that stars the superhero. The cast includes Garfield as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The film will portray Parker as his super powers are evolving in high school.

The film's development began simultaneously with Sony announcing the cancellation of Spider-Man 4. Opting for a reboot with the same production team rather than another sequel, the studio announced a July 2012 release date for what was now titled The Amazing Spider-Man. James Vanderbilt was hired to write the script while Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves helped fine-tune the script. Filming started in December 2010 in Los Angeles before moving to New York City with the help of RED Epic camera. The film entered post-production in April 2011.

Sony Entertainment has focused its marketing campaign with a promotional website with released images, 2 theatrical trailers, a prologue screening in certain cities and a video game tie-in being developed by Beenox among other products. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 3, 2012. A sequel of the film is being planned for release in 2014 with James Vanderbilt hired to again write the screenplay.

I took him as meaning.."adapting (a new Spider-Man) costume is easy but it's harder to satisfy an actor"..or something like that! Might be wrong of course, but either way I doubt he means a costume for his character

It's possible, which is why I called it a "quizzical quote". In the entire interview though, he seemed to be talking specifically about himself.

I really hope he is the Proto-goblin. Just like in the comics, him being a test subject to perfect the goblin formula for Norman.

But if he isn't I would believe that he prob cuts Doc Connors research funding or something, hence the attack in that cab?

What if (and I may be grasping at straws here) but what if the lizard we have seen in the trailers is actually Irrfan Khan and the real lizard has not been revealed yet because correct me if I am wrong but two-face was never revealed in the dark knight trailers so it could be that they actually haven't revealed Curt Connors' lizard yet

Slumdog was great until the dancing at the end. But I guess they do that in a lot of Bollywood movies for some reason. Grif, are there any movies ever that you've actually liked? Haha...

I agree with @RorMachine.

Or...

Maybe he gets transformed into one of Dr. Connor's "Lizard People". You, since some are speculating The Lizard to be plotting to turn everyone into a Lizard.

We really don't know but it's hard to believe Sony has a guy named Van Adder who works at OSCORP and is a villain and doesn't have some sort of acknowledgement to ProtoGoblin.

If some of you would learn how to read and practice reading comprehension, you could obviously see that when he says " Adapting a costume was not difficult" he's saying that his costume is no different than say Uncle Ben's because YES regular street clothes in movies are still done thru...you guessed it! THE COSTUMES DEPARTMENT!!!! Plus he's not Proto Goblin anymore because he thought he was too good to play a super villain so whatever! He'll probably be wearing a suit or a doctor's lab coat or something which would not be difficult! Thanks for playing.

@Nerdman81 - I agree totally.
The costume department deals with everything an actor gets to wear on screen and puts them back in their place after the day's shooting.
An actor 'steps into' a role, just as they wear the costume that go with that role.
This can mean anything from a pair of briefs to a suit of armour and anything in between, so I don't read too much into this quote.

IwasGroot - 2/21/2012, 11:20 AM
@Growler- Thanks man! I'm glad SOMEONE in this place has some sense! It's cool to have debate when there's something worth debating, but I hate when people read WAY too much into something simple when the answers are staring you right in the face!! Plus if they're gonna introduce a character that could be a potential villain in future sequels, and that actor refuses to play the part required if they wanted to put Proto Goblin in the movies, it only makes sense they would scrap it and just change the guys name since he's already cast!

Porto goblin is so much of a " who cares " villain. If they are going to do another goblin it has to be Hobgoblin.

It would be truly AWESOME if they linked all the entire Marvel world regardless of who owns rights. The current contractural quagmire, that entertains no one, keeps legendary comic battles/encounters (team ups) from ever happening on the silver screen, i.e. Wolverine vs Hulk.

No Goblins until the second or third film. In fact, save the Green Goblin for the third movie and give me Max Dillon/Electro for the sequel. He needs some movie time, though probably as a side villain with Norman in development.

You know what actors wear in movies right? COSTUMES!!! He could be talking about a got damn lab coat and pair of Dockers.

Interesting.. Maybe they're doing a 'Spider-Man 2' style ending where they tease the next film's villian?

It's hard to understand the context of the costume he's talking about.

It does like he is going to wear a costume. But then it seems like he could also be talking about the Spider-Man suit.

@noregerts ya thats what I was thinking it would be very intriguing if they introduced Norman Osborn via email to Ratha and phone call without hearing Osborne voice. I'm expecting GG To be the finale villian and kill gwen leading too Peter beating the living crap outa GG and ending the series with spider-man and MJ falling in love.

The less masks, the better. Spidey is the masked character, villains have nothing to lose.
