Jon Watts Reveals SPIDER-MAN's Age In The MCU And Talks Skipping Uncle Ben's Death

Spider-Man reboot director Jon Watts has revealed exactly how old Tom Holland's Peter Parker will be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also weighs in on what makes the British actor the right choice for the role as well as why they're skipping the origin story...

We still know very little about what we should expect from the wall-crawler's arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it has been confirmed that both Captain America: Civil War and 2017's Spider-Man reboot will skip the origin story.

"There are only so many times you can kill Uncle Ben," director Jon Watts said in an interview with Empire Magazine (via Yahoo). "I love the idea of making a coming-of-age high-school movie. We’re really going to see Peter Parker in high school and get deeper into that side of it. He’s just 15 now."

These comments pretty much confirm that those recent dubious rumours about Spider-Man having been in existence for a year in the MCU are false, especially as Peter didn't get bitten in the comics until he was 15. This means 19 year old actor Tom Holland will be playing a character a good few years younger than him, and Watts had nothing but good things to say about the actor. "Tom was pretty perfect. He’s very athletic. He can actually do a backflip! If he didn’t already capture the spirit of the character, with that on top the kid is Spider-Man."

Are you looking forward to this new take on the iconic Marvel superhero?

No disrespect to Tom but that means dogshit that he can do backflips. This is an actor & you are sold on the fact he can do backflips.....

How about focusing on his acting ability........

That's not a man, that's a boy. He hasn't even had his sweet sixteen yet

So, this Peter Parker got his powers when he was 13.

Since, they said he's been Spider-Man for two years when we meet him, right?

I would rather see a spiderman that can crack jokes full of charisma than a spiderman that can backflip.
@hufflepuff69
I guess you would call it a super sweet sixteen lel

Going to be cool to finally see a movie where they really get into Spidey as a kid. None of the other movies did it right.

Pretty sure we already knew this, and what was said in those "dubious rumors" because both are things that Kevin Feige told us f-cking months ago.

In several incarnations, Spider-Man is a teenager in high school.

In the movie, Spider-Man will be a teenager in high school.

I think it's all going to be okay.

@ImKennyPowers they said he'll have been spidey for two years when his solo comes out. In civil war, he's been spidey for a year...so he became spidey at 14 I guess. Young blood haha

Better than having a 30 year-old try to play a high school kid like that other attempt at a franchise

I can imagine Spidey becoming the focus of the MCU after the Infinity War storyline wraps up. That, along with Inhumans and the sequels for Dr Strange/Captain Marvel/Black Panther, will likely make up most of Phase 4.

@chimuchone
"The same can be said about Henry Cavill. The guy looks like Superman taken from a comic book page but he has no acting skills and yet they chose him because of his likeness to the character when the guy has zero acting skills which were possessed by Reeves and Routh."

Still don't know how a 15 year old won't look like a sidekick next to RDJ and Evans and Hemsworth

MCU Spiderman isn't even old enough to drive, purchase cigarettes or see a Rated R movie by himself but is supposed to be saving the world from Thanos and other villains??? True MCU fans will support this decision along with any other boneheaded decision Feige makes but this really sets the character back even further.

This has nothing to do with Spiderman, but what about Ber Refaeli as Ms. Marvel??

She totally looks the part! Plus, she is gorgeous!

"Jason is such a great guy. Real energetic person to be around on the set. Plus he can swim!"

From Spider Man to Spider Boy. And we are supposed to believe that he can fight alongside 40-50 year old actors portraying super heros?
