SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Thomas Haden Church Reveals Scrapped Subplot And Confirms Return Talks

Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man: No Way Home star Thomas Haden Church has weighed in on possibly returning as Sandman in a future project, confirming there have been talks about exactly that. Check it out!

Spider-Man: No Way Home was a phenomenal movie, but one that might have been much different had it not been for the pandemic. Both Rhys Ifans and Thomas Haden Church were forced to shoot their roles remotely, hence why Marvel Studios recycled footage from The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3

Despite that, it was still fun to spend more time with The Lizard and Sandman in the threequel, but have we really seen the last of Flint Marko?

During a recent interview with The DisInsider, Church confirmed there have been talks about a possible return as Sandman.

"John and I and Amy [Pascal] and Kevin, we all had a lot of conversations. And I would say that conversations have been had about the possibility of Sandman coming into a future iteration of it," the actor teased. "The conversation has happened about him coming back, and maybe picking up a more fulfilling story."

"You know? With Flint and being not just Sandman, but returning to human form."

We still don't know whether Spider-Man: No Way Home's cures actually depowered the villains or, like Doctor Octopus, just gave them better control over their abilities. If Tom Holland's web-slinger is heading on a trip through the Multiverse in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, then it's possible he'll be reunited with some of the baddies he faced in 2021.

However, we also can't discount the possibility that the stage is being set for a Sinister Six project, particularly after Morbius' laughable mid-credits scene.

Elsewhere in his conversation with the site, Church revealed that his Sandman return once gave Flint more to do.

"We had a whole story involving his daughter, for No Way Home. And it just ended up [cut]," he confirms. "There was just so much going on."

Spider-Man: No Way Home was already a pretty busy movie, so this doesn't surprise us. It's also unclear whether this subplot is one that was shot or simply just discussed during the scripting stages.

Would you like to see more of Sandman in the MCU?

You know, I would like to see more Sandman. It feels like there are a lot of fulfilling stories left in him. I hope we do see more of him in the future... I'm not saying a solo movie, Sony...

@TheShellyMan - They could do a redemption arc if they wanted to bring Flint into the MCU and have him team up with Silver Sable, Rocket Racer, and Prowler.

@FilmGuy7878 - The only fitting redemption arc I can see would be for him and his sand to fill in all the potholes in NY

Flint Marko with no Sandman powers - no thanks. Lol

With the variant thing it doesn't matter in the slightest. They can show Dafoe in full Goblin garb and then make clear he's not exacly that one in NWH through dialogue.

Not judging, just stating a fact.

Church might have a tough time playing Marko again. He was in his mid-40’s when he made Spider-man 3, and he bulked up a lot for the role. But now he’s in his 60’s, and putting on all that weight and muscle again could be tough. IIRC when they were making No Way Home, they just recycled old footage of him in Spider-man 3 when he wasn’t in sand form.

@santoanderson - wasnt that archived footage more due to being filmed during the pandemic and him not being able to relocate ? idk

@hazapez - Either reason, it's just strange that a multibillion company would resort to such a cheap tactic as copying and pasting.. take it as thats what they think of their fans.

@Matchesz - I mean it's from the same shoot but it's not the same exact take if you look at it back to back. Without him actually being on set, what else was there to do?

Giving the villains extra backstory is always nice, oh well. If I rewatch, I skip like half of it lol

He's talking about Secret Wars. Especially considering the making it a two parter rumor. Marvel is going all out.

It's about to be a bunch of pissed off haters out there.

"Marvel is about to have multiple mega hits rounding out the multiverse saga ending with a 3 billion dollar movie featuring and spanning half the old Marvel filmography. Which will lead right into the Mutant saga.

Just look at Spiderman: NWH. Not even the biggest MCU franchise yet it made nearly 2 billion simply for having just the Spider bros. Avengers: SW is bringing back the Spider bros plus some of the villains, the entire core old X-MEN plus villians, variants of Tony Stark, Black Widow and others, and several random heroes from Marvel's past filmography. Even Quake(AoS) will be in the movie.

When this happens all the DC fanboys and clickbaiter editors will shift the goal post pretending they haven't been spouting make believe for the last 16 years. Like they always do."

Sandman was probably my favorite part of Spiderman 3. If Sam had been able to stick with telling that focused story and not been forced into including Eddie and the symbiote story which took over the films run time, I would have loved to see Hayden explore Flint more.

I still would, but I'm not sure how that would be done now that wouldn't just serve as a add on to some other film. I don't think a Sandman movie with that version needs to exist yo flesh out this Sandman more. The only way I see it being meaningful beyond nostalgia cameos which is all No Way Home was, is to maybe do a very short mini series in streaming. Like 4 or 5 episodes.

In fact.... I'd actually kinda love that. Hm.

But that's about all I could see. And honestly that's never gonna happen.

Honestly they should do "What If... Special Presentations" and have "What If Special Presentations...The Amazing Spider-Man 3" and "What If Special Presentations... Sandman".

@TheVandalore - You can tell Sandman and Harry were really the stories he wanted to do. Like on paper, Spider-Man and New Goblin vs Sandman and Vulture make a lot more sense as since they were considered B-tier villains, you don't have to give them as much screentime to develop as say Goblin, Doc Ock, or Venom.

It's definitely a shame we didn't get that movie, cause maybe they could've saved Venom for his own movie.

For no reason, Flint refuses to go back to his universe after the entire movie saying he wanted to, and tries to kill Peter
Movie's explanation: "I DONT CARE!"

Anyway, they really, REALLY need to let the old actors go...like, serously.

The only explanation in the movie literally is "I DONT CARE"

KelvTwelve
KelvTwelve - 3/27/2023, 9:02 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - He's not refusing to go back to his universe, he wants the box so he can press the button himself, rather than wait for the other villains to be redeemed.

I like Church's Sandman, but I have a problem with his character:

All of the villains are all fated to die fighting a Spider-Man, but Sandman and Lizard are not!

That's a little bit confusing plothole

I still want a Spider-Man 4 to happen with Maguire. And if that happens, I could see Flint return in that as well.

Ugh.. these people really dont know what they're doing, so many srapped ideas and deleted scenes from this phase for the end product to end up mid anyway. They had enough story to split it into two movies to give Tobey and Andrew their own arcs also. But it seems these ADHD funny book writers these days just arent the same as the ones back in the day. It seem like critical thinking is hard for them..

Good thing they didn’t overstuff No Way Home, would’ve been hard to get another story arc in there. Although I still would’ve liked to see a venom appearance. Oh well.
I do find it interesting that he pointed out you don’t know if they lost their powers or just gained control of them.

No it wasn't. It was executed so poorly. Would've been better if they left Lizard and Sandman completely out.
