SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Tom Holland Reveals New Intel On Peter Parker's Dynamic With Doctor Strange

Initial reports described Doctor Strange as a "mentor" to Spider-Man in the threequel, but Tom Holland has debunked this, making it clear that while they're not enemies, they're also by no means friends.

We still can't say for sure whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Peter Parker will receive backup from a couple of familiar Variants in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but he is going to have some help from Doctor Strange. When Benedict Cumberbatch was first revealed as part of the cast, the Sorcerer Supreme was described as a "mentor" to the wall-crawler.

This elicited a lot of groans from fans who were relieved that Spidey would no longer be looking up to Iron Man in that way, but during an interview with Games Radar, Tom Holland made it clear that what we see in this movie is going to be a "very different relationship [from Tony Stark and Peter Peter]."

"I wouldn’t consider Doctor Strange as a mentor in this film – it’s more as a colleague. At this point in the films, Spider-Man has established himself as quite a powerful and serious Avenger," the actor explains. "Doctor Strange sees that in him, and treats him like an equal. And throughout the course of the film, their relationship breaks down. And rather than becoming colleagues – they don’t become enemies, but they’re definitely not friends."

Holland adds, "Spider-Man always wants to please everyone. He always wants everyone to be happy. And then, in this instance, that’s not the case. It’s an interesting relationship. It’s very, very different from the one of Tony and Peter. But it’s a fun one. Spider-Man and Doctor Strange are a great mix. They look great onscreen. The balance between them is very funny."

While Strange is clearly happy to help Peter with his identity crisis, we know something goes wrong as the two heroes end up fighting their way across New York and into the Mirror Dimension! There are rumours out there about what leads to this falling out, but seeing this relationship devolve could bring us another step closer to the Spidey from the comics who is alienated from his fellow heroes.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on December 17.

Honestly, all of the things i'm reading about this between Holland and Benedict has me soooo damn pumped. I don't even need another trailer.

Love this description. As much as I didn't want a Multiverse movie for the FFH follow up, if Holland isn't blowing smoke with the quotes from the past few months then this is going to be a completely different type of all timer

So the plot leak is very likely true.

Will Spider-Man in the MCU ever stop being just a sidekick??

@TopBoy - classic comics spider-man is always minor when opposed to other more adult heroes, like the Avengers or FF. That's a nice dynamic.

The only time I saw him face a team at the same level was with the x-men in the 1st secret wars. Was also great btw because they were traditional underdogs.

@Fogs - yes, but that wasn't the cast in his solo books.

@Origame - And it isn't the case when he's not interacting with other heroes onscreen.

@Fogs - Yes it is. Both of his solo movies have him act as a sidekick to Iron man, even if he was dead in one.
Origame

@Fogs - well maybe you shouldn't have other heroes in a Spiderman movie then.

@Origame - Totally, I'm not a fan of what they've done to MCU Spidey too. He should be his own thing - mainly Stark's influence on him annoys me, he should never be dependant on his tech.

Still, my point was simply on how old-timey spidey was always seen as a minor hero in the comics and how much of a funny/interesting dynemic that was.
Origame

@Fogs - I mean, in terms of the greater marvel universe he wasn't a big player. But that's because his side of marvel universe, like the x men, was so self contained.

@TopBoy - Tony was "his" sidekick in the first one. Spider-Man handled the Vulture by himself; I don't see this as being a "sidekick". He's just sharing screen time.

@Origame - Totally, yes. That's why I love the 1st secret wars, everyone should read it realizing it's the 1st big marvel crossover.
Fogs
Fogs - 11/10/2021, 4:33 PM
@LSHF - Hmm have to disagree here, he was Tony's little protegée, going to germany, having his suit taken out from him, using Stark tech all the time instead of inventing his own upgrades.

But yes, he had a nice char moment with Vulture (I really like that scene when he lifts all the rubble, very reminiscent of the comics)

Still, in the 2nd one he went back using all the Stark tech and crying out his absence.

The marketing for this film has been a disaster.

A teaser trailer 3 and half months before the film's release, preceded by a LEAK of its unfinished version.

A teaser poster 1 MONTH before the film's release, which is just a cropped and photoshopped photo of Spidey posing on the bridge. Preceded by an early version of that poster, seen only on buses, which was later photoshopped to add Ock's tentacles and Green Goblin on the background.

Presumably a 2nd trailer, LESS than a month before the film's release.

Various leaked videos/pics from the film and news and revelations about villains revealed in a MAGAZINE and not officially by the studio.

For presumably such a big event type film, promoting it has been one of the worst attempts I've seen for years.

@kylo0607 - they have enough buzz and word of mouth in the public that they don’t need to market it that hard. It’ll surely pick up in the next month, especially after that last leak. Wouldn’t be surprised if their marketing budget was cut to make room for casting, sfx, etc., couldn’t have been cheap to get all the rumored guest appearances for this movie.
Origame
Origame - 11/10/2021, 12:13 PM
@kylo0607 - I know a lot of people who, while they know the film is releasing, don't know it's coming out in December. Marketing needs to pump up now if they want people to come see it.
kylo0607
kylo0607 - 11/10/2021, 1:12 PM
@Origame - Exactly.

NONE of my non-geek friends know this is coming out next month. Let alone that Electro or Sandman are in the movie too. I won't even mention Tobey or Andrew. Heck, most of them were confused seeing a pumpkin bomb and Ock and wondering what the hell was going on.

Which is why the marketing IS a disaster. You should never advertise something big like this so late in the game. Or so secret-y for that matter.

@kylo0607 - sigh marketing reviews and movie scores don’t make movies successful it’s people who see them look at transformers sequels both made billion back to back look at reviews and critics scores for them.,

Marketing was bad for hulk two how did I see it and know about it was in theaters
