SPIDER-WOMAN Rumored To Take Place In The MCU As Part Of Marvel Studios' Deal With Sony Pictures

An interesting new rumour has started doing the rounds today about Sony Pictures' Spider-Woman plans, with the suggestion being that Jessica Drew's origin could play out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Excitement is rapidly building for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but many fans continue to question what comes next for the wall-crawler. It's beginning to look like Venom will join him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while it's no secret Sony is keen to start using Peter Parker in their Marvel movies.

A Spider-Woman project is in development with Olivia Wilde set to direct, but a new rumour suggests that Jessica Drew could join Peter as part of the MCU.

It's said that "[for] at least the first film, Spider-Woman may follow the same line as Spider-Man in the MCU, being under the Marvel Studios label in association with Sony Pictures, in an attempt to have her more at home around the universe." This comes from a Twitter user known as @mainmiddleman who has been sharing what appears to be relatively reliable intel in recent months.

Needless to say, it's best to take this with a pinch of salt for now, but Spider-Woman would be right at home in the MCU. Jessica has lots of history with the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and even the Skrulls, so there are any number of ways she could be used by Marvel Studios in Phase 4 and beyond.

We'll have to wait and see, but more collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony would be no bad thing, especially if it leads to an even greater variety of character interactions on screen. After all, who wouldn't want to see Spider-Man teaming up with Spider-Woman or battling Venom?

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings exclusively into theaters on December 17.

In an alternate reality, Feige never did the deal with Sony during Civil War. Sony Pictures collapsed during the pandemic and Spider-Man rights fully reverted back to Marvel.

@TheManWithoutFear - Would they have fully collapsed tho? Really? They would still have massive hits like Spider-Verse, Venom, the Jumanji films and would probably still have found moderate success with Andrew Garfield Spider-Man's series.

@Nightwing1015

They will never sell back Spider-Man. Ever.

I remember her story having something to do with her father doing an experiment and Hyda being involved.

If only they did this for ALL the Marvel IP's Sony has their mits on through association to Spider-Man.

I don't trust Sony releasing stuff alone, but more stuff released in association with Marvel Studios like the Homecoming, FFH & NWH movies, I would have preferred similar for Venom, Venom 2, Morbius, Kraven etc.

Can't trust Sonly alone, but at least when there is a little bit of MS input or guidance along the way it's somewhat palpable.

If I were Sony, just let MS do the work & take what you get profit wise back out of it with collaboration deals for doing absolutely FA! WIN / WIN for everybody / majority of fans.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - "If I were Sony, just let MS do the work & take what you get profit wise..."

I apologize if you already knew this, but this is exactly what they have been doing with the Spider-Man films. Sony pays for them, takes "almost" all of the profit (they got ALL of the profit for the first five films he was in), and Marvel Studios has complete control over pretty much everything else (the writing, the hiring, complete creative control, PLUS the profits from the toy sales).

And it certainly has been a win-win situation.

@LSHF - I get that's what they've been doing, What I'm saying is, they should have just done it for everything, not just Spider-Man.

I feel Venom & Venom 2 would have came out much much better than they did had they done that & I'd be a little more trusting if they did that for Morbius & Kraven, two characters that I love that I just don't trust Sony having any input with solely on their own.

It just makes sense to have the same kind of deal between both on everything & not just the Spider-Man movies.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - I agree.

I wonder if Kevin ever brought that up to them and Amy wouldn't have anything to do with it. She didn't even like the idea of them doing this with Spider-Man.

Yes, I suspect that Venom would have been far better to more people, but also I suspect that since they are successful, Amy isn't getting close to loosening her current grip on these other two Spider-Man related properties.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - Agreed. However, that article like a week ago about Amy Pascal throwing a rage fit when Feige suggested the reboot pretty much sums up why this hasn't happened.

Sony (Pascal, Avi Arad if he's still around, & other execs) don't see their track-record the same way we do. They somehow believe they're excellent Spiderman film makers, despite not having a great SM film produced since 2003. They have too much ego to just let Marvel Studios handle all Spiderman-related films and take in the profits, even though that would be much easier and lead to better products.

I have a feeling this is just gonna a muddled mess about what takes place in the MCU and what doesn't. Same with any tv show that isn't produced by Marvel Studios itself.
