Spidey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
By
James Quinn
Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna! Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe crashed like a comic book panel on the big screen, many comic book fans have demanded that Spider-Man should be included in the Avengers. It also didn’t help that Spider-Man at the time of the Avengers in 2012 was going through a reboot film that everyone just found “meh” (Although I thought it was better than most people give it credit for.) Sony has been making Spider-Man movies since 2002 with Sam Rami’s films, and they’ve desperately been continuing the process. The Amazing Spider Man 2 was not only a critically panned movie, but came out in the middle of the Marvel Cinematic conquest with Captain America: Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy, and in comparison to those films, it was just weak potatoes. But recently, Sony has made a deal with Marvel Studios to retain the rights to Spider-Man, but also have the character feature in the Marvel films. Hosanna! Hosanna!
I seem to be in the minority that think that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was an entertaining film, and that Andrew Garfield is the best Peter Parker/Spider-Man we’ve seen on screen, so truth be told, I’m a little disappointed that he won’t be able to continue his role as the character. In my perfect world Andrew Garfield would still be in this role and be a part of the Marvel films, but alas that is not the case. The Spider-Man franchise will once again be rebooted into a whole new continuity.Third times the charm I suppose. Before any of this was announced I didn’t really care for Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I think most of us can agree, that 2012’s Avengers was so good, that it didn’t necessarily need some young Peter Parker fresh out of high school quipping jokes while they have to deal with an alien invasion. Or at least I didn’t think it would be necessary. One of the things that I admire about these Marvel films, is that they give lesser known characters a chance to shine. Who knew Guardians of the Galaxy would be a money-maker? Who knew the phrase “Hail Hydra” would become a meme. That being said, Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe wouldn’t hurt. I’m not begging for Spidey to be in the upcoming Civil War film because that’ll probably have enough going on with that well-developed rivalry between Captain America and Iron Man. Wouldn’t want that wall-crawling annoying arachnid to get in the way of good character development. But despite my trepidations, I actually trust that marvel will put out good stuff with this character.
Now what should they do with this character after two cinematic renditions and is now being re-casted for a third time? Obviously no one wants to see the origin story again and if I could list out every comic book that mentions Peter’s origin story, and every cartoon episode that mentioned the Spider-Man origin, I would, just to make a point, but what nerd has the time for that? I’d imagine the producers and writers of the next Spider-Man film are aware of this dilemma, so of course they know that a rehash of what the past movies have done, would be a complete waste of time.
I would recommend that they start the character later in life as an adult, maybe as a science professor. Alas that won’t be the case either, because according to this article on the Variety website, the film will be set back in high school. Okay, well how about we finally get Donald Glover to play the Miles Morales character from Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man by Brian Michel Bendis. Sure he’s not the original character, but for a single Spider-Man film, it would be different enough to get attention. How about two Spider-Men. One to be in the Avengers or Civil War as the fans want, another to be in the single Spider-Man films, prefeably Miles Morales.
Or, and I know this will not be a very popular suggestion, maybe they should stop making Spider-Man movies all together and just have the character in supporting roles for the Avengers. While us comic book fans are fine with having our favorite characters rebooted 3 to 4 times a year (Looking at you DC Comics), regular movie going audiences are tired of seeing the same types of Superhero films over and over again. Don’t believe me? Sure, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made a decent amount of money for the Sony company, but it’s consider the lowest rated Spider-Man film on Rotten Tomatoes with a 53%. Spider-Man has become such a popular brand name, that people cease interest in the character. But people seem to be responding well to different Superhero titles such as Guardians of the Galaxy, and Birdman. Just having him in the Avengers and having guest-appearances in Marvel films like what they’re doing with the hulk is a gdod strategy for giving what people want, while not smothering them with too much. However that probably won’t happen, because as I said before, Spider-Man is a popular brand name, and now that Marvel studios have their hands on him, they’ll surely want to milk that cow as much as they can. I’m mainly optimistic when it comes to Marvel studios because they haven’t disappointed me yet, except for maybe Thor: The Dark World, but even then it was still kind of enjoyable.
One last proposal for marvel studios: You have the Spider-Man franchise now, and you know if there is one character from Spider-Man’s supporting cast that needs a solo movie, there is only once character. That character is J Jonah Jameson reprised by J.K. Simmons. Make it happen Marvel. Make it happen.
