Will Smith And Margot Robbie Discuss SUICIDE SQUAD's Lack Of 'Rick Flagg' And More
Will Smith (After Earth) and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) are set to play Deadshot and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, and they talk here about which stage the script is at and why we've heard nothing about a new Rick Flagg being cast following Tom Hardy's departure...
The cast of Suicide Squad is undoubtedly amazing, but fans were dealt a blow when it was revealed that Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) had decided to depart the project. Rick Flagg may not be an A-List character like The Joker, but losing the British actor still hurt! Talking to USA Today to promote their upcoming movie Focus, Will Smith and Margot Robbie were asked what's taking so long to find a new leader for the villainous team. "We've still got to get it right," Smith said. Robbie meanwhile, added: "This happens all the time. People act like, 'Oh my god, the movie must be ending!' It's just the deal with movies." Not to mention "a lot of the characters haven't been portrayed before so it's a pretty big undertaking. And it's a big undertaking for the people who are going to play the characters who have been played, like the Joker. It's big shoes to fill." That's obviously a reference to Heath Ledger, the actor who played The Joker in The Dark Knight.
So, why has what sounds like a great role in one of 2016's most exciting comic book movies not yet been cast? According to Smith, David Ayer "turned the screenplay in before Christmas. What happens is Hollywood shuts down. But he was still working and he wanted to (start shooting) April 13th. So it takes a couple weeks to gear back up at the top of the year and people have taken (other) movies. He's moving really quickly." Moving on the duo were asked about their preparation for Deadshot and Harley Quinn respectively. Have they already started working out? "Oh god yes," said Smith. "I started before Christmas. No carbs on Christmas! It was terrible." Robbie on the other hand is focusing on strength training. "Oh, I ate everything on Christmas. I'm not strong though. To do all your own stunts you have to be so strong." What do you think?
