THE SUICIDE SQUAD Will Feature The Return Of Joel Kinnaman As Task Force X Leader Rick Flag

Despite initial reports billing James Gunn's The Suicide Squad as a reboot, yet another character from the first movie has been confirmed as returning and you can find out more details after the jump...

When it was revealed that James Gunn had been tasked with writing and directing The Suicide Squad, it was widely reported that the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer would reboot the franchise.

However, we soon learned that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn would return, while Idris Elba was tasked with suiting up as Deadshot in Will Smith's place (that later changed and the actor will now play a newly created character). Since then, a number of other original cast members have confirmed their own returns, including Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) and Jai Courtney (Boomerang).

Now, Joel Kinnaman has taken to social media to reveal that he'll be back as Rick Flag, the man who led Task Force X into battle in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. The fact he appears to be actively training for the movie may go some way in debunking theories that the original cast members will all be killed off in the opening few minutes, opening the door for a new, quirkier team of villains.

Whatever the case may be, it's great to see some of the originals returning and easy to imagine Gunn taking them to some fun places when he enters the DC Extended Universe for the first time.

What do you guys think?

He made a terrible Rick Flag. But they could fix that by introducing his father.

Or he’s a guy who enjoys shooting at a range and can write it off as a business expense if he calls it “actively training for a role”.

So yeah, he may be back, but I’m not taking this as confirmation that it’s a huge part.

Joe Kinnaman needs a shot of joy in his arm. In Altered Carbon, Robocop, and Suicide Squad he was so boring and bland. Everything around him Altered Carbon saved the show. Glad Anthony Mackie is taking over.

@MexCowboyNation - I mean....those 3 movies have no reason for him to have joy though. The movies and shows he's been in never really get to show a more bright side of his acting, you know? Think that's more on the projects he chooses and the writers.

I personally think he was great in AC, solid in Robocop (for a medicore film), as well as SS (very bad movie lol).

@Menks123 - (While I don't fully disagree with you) I do think a better approach to Flag would have included some prominent smugness. If we're supposed to sympathize with Deadshot, then we should want to wipe that smirk off his face.

But Kinneman didn't smirk, he just... existed, like an assistant manager at a Wendy's.

@MexCowboyNation - he's a fine actor but i think he works better as support than lead. Like you said a better lead on AC would have elevated it but he was good on House of Cards and just fine in the first Squad, he really was the straight man of the team

@Saga - He was also good on "The Killing".
