Will she be in the untitled "Man of Steel" sequel? A better question is should she be in the sequel? Based on the foundation laid so far, the answer is…yes. Here's why…

Fans who purchased advanced screening tickets to "Man of Steel" also received a digital prequel comic. Written by Sterling Gates with a story by David Goyer, Geoff Johns and Zack Snyder, the comic shed some light on the origins of the Kryptonian ship uncovered in the movie.

The story follows Kara Zor-El as she leads a mission to search for inhabitable planets. When she awakens from hypersleep, Kara discovers her crew murdered by a stowaway Kryptonian. A battle between the two cripples the ship, forcing it to crash on Earth. Afterwards, someone is seen leaving the ship, which is gradually buried over time. In present day, a satellite picks up a mysterious signal in Canada, as the last panels show Clark on the fishing boat.

Fast forward to the film and Clark discovering the scout ship. He finds capsules with dead bodies, (Kara's crew), and an empty one, (Kara's). In an interview with CraveOnline, Deborah Snyder, one of the producers on "Man of Steel", hinted at the significance of this scene…

"You know what’s interesting, and I don’t know and I’m not going to say what it means or anything, but the one thing if you look closely when Henry’s going through the Fortress of Solitude there’s an empty… you know all the bodies… the pods? There’s an empty pod. I’m not going to say what, or if, it means anything but there is an empty pod there".

When pressed for more, Snyder simply added…

"It’s a thing. That’s one Easter Egg that, I don’t know. Again, it might not mean anything, [but] it might mean something…"

Kara exists in this universe and she's on Earth. The question becomes, why go through the work of establishing this if not to utilize her? Sooner rather than later. Of all the characters rumored to appear in the sequel, (Wonder Woman, Nightwing, the Flash) Supergirl is the logical choice. Introducing her wouldn't feel forced like the others would.

Consider where Clark is now, following the events in Metropolis. Zod's army was sent to the Phantom Zone, Zod is dead and the Genesis Chamber was destroyed. Clark is alone. Or is he? He never investigated the empty capsule he found. There's another Kryptonian somewhere on Earth. Clark would want to find him or her.

What better resource is there than working at the Daily Planet? What if there are reports of miraculous rescues, not unlike the stories that surrounded Clark? People claiming they saw "an angel with golden hair". Clark couldn't resist tracking these stories down, finding this mysterious Kryptonian. At the very least, he'll want to be certain this person isn't another Zod or Faora.

Snyder and Goyer could explore the relationship between Clark and Kara. To show how different their lives have been on Earth.

And Clark might not be the only one looking for Kara. Bruce Wayne could be tracking her down as well. Say Bruce has been retracing Clark's steps through the past 33 years and uncovers incidents he couldn't possibly have been responsible for. Bruce deduces there's a second Kryptonian out there.

Maybe Lex Luthor knows Kara exists, too. And why stop there? Kara's a good way to introduce Brainiac if Snyder wanted to add a physical threat to the story. It could be a race to see who gets to her first.

Supergirl would work and she would be easy to do. Much easier than Wonder Woman. Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment, spoke with the Hollywood Reporter. Here's Nelson on Wonder Woman…

"...There are lots of facets to Wonder Woman, and I think the key is, how do you get the right facet for that right medium…We are still trying right now, but she's tricky."

That may be the case with Wonder Woman, but not with Supergirl. She is, essentially, another Superman. Her origins are clear. And she has roots in this new cinematic universe.

At this juncture there's no indication Kara is expected to appear in the 2015 film or that Warner Bros. has any plans for a Supergirl franchise. Then again, news could break Snyder is testing three blonde actresses between the ages of 20 and 25.

Until then, have a look below at what a Supergirl movie could look like. It was cut together before the prequel comic was released so, unfortunately, no references to the shared universe.

Do you think Supergirl should be featured in "Man of Steel 2"? Who do you see in the role?
