KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE Director Matthew Vaughn Seemingly Confirms MAN OF STEEL 2 Talks

Back in March, a rumor did the rounds which placed Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman) at the top of WB's list to helm the sequel to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, and the director has now seemingly confirmed that he was indeed in contention.

During a press junket for Kingsman: The Golden Circle, HeyUguys asked Vaughn about the possibility of him taking the reigns of the solo Superman franchise. Although the director's response seems to suggest that he's going to be busy for the next while, he does reaffirm his love for the character and mentions that he has "had chats" about the iconic DC hero.

“I am planning another Kingman, I’ve written the treatment and some of the scenes…I don’t know what I’m going to do next but I have had chats about Superman, I love Superman. “If somebody asks me to do Indiana Jones, most of the superheros or Star Wars the fanboy in me can’t help but be excited.”

Warner Bros. will almost certainly get moving on Man of Steel 2 eventually, but the studio has a lot on its plate at the moment so chances are it'll be another while before we hear anything official. Perhaps by then Vaughn will be available and willing to come aboard.

Tell us, would you like to see Vaughn helm a Man of Steel sequel, or do you think another director would be better suited to the task? Sound off below.

@JohnnyTBP -

Really enjoyed First Class, that bar scene is just amazing, really makes it hard to take your eyes off the screen with all of the tension.
I think Vaughn would do an amazing job with Clark, and Superman, gives a take on him that would really resonate with people

@SimplyAz - Yeah he's shown he's capable of at least some character development (more than we've been getting), building tension, and creating action scenes with emotional depth.

@FleischerSupes -

Yep, think he would really run with it and would like to see a version of Superman, that is a mixture of Man of Steel and a bit of Reeves version.

@FleischerSupes - I have written pages on the character development of Man of Steel and could write even more and there is even more character development in Batman v Superman. It's how it is presented that is the big issue. Snyder doesn't tell you much. He expects you to figure it out on tour own. But with very few clues given, people often come to the wrong conclusions on it and either ASSume there is no character development or that DC Films Superman is a selfish, emo, narcissistic, mass murdering, sociopathic amoral villain and don't want to give the film's a second look. But I do agree that that won't be an issue with Matthew Vaughn. On your other point, I agree. I love Snyder's DC Films. But he has the emotional beats just before, at a short point during, and after the action sequences. It's not throughout. It could be with Justice League, though. But I also agree that Matthew Vaughn can do that really well too. He'd be the perfect successor to Snyder. I hope he can do the sequel.

@SisterSunday52 - Good points. Maybe my issue isn't really a lack of characterization. After all in MOS Superman's motivations and personality do get presented, or can be inferred. Maybe it's just that I don't know if this was a characterization that showcased his best qualities.

@SisterSunday52 - That's definitely Snyder's issue. Thankfully, I don't mind figuring it out on my own. ;)

@SisterSunday52 - You mean a perfect replacement for Snyder. Snyder was always a bad choice.

@SisterSunday52 - I actually think the issue with BvS is that Snyder expects the audience to assume that Superman has been all of the things he was in the Donner films in the intervening two years, but it just doesn't line up with how he acts (and doesn't act) in BvS. Snyder jettisons core aspects of the character for the sake of plot. Just consider how Diana interacts with the people of Veld and how Snyder portrays Clark's interactions with people in BvS, and it says it all.

More than that, however, I think Snyder's approach to Superman as a singular, distant, transcendent deity was the wrong approach to the character. If Vaughn takes it up, I hope he can get back to the friendly hero and natural leader of the comics.
