Superman and Wonder Woman Tid Bits From Emerald City Comic Con

Bob Harras and Matt Idelson offer fans some Superman and Wonder Woman costume info from Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle.

Emerald City Comic Con kicked off Friday in Seattle. DC's Bob Harras, Matt Idelson, Will Dennis, Chris Roberson, Marv Wolfman and Sergio Aragones were among one of the first panels to field questions from fans.

Of course, questions thrown their way involved almost everything under the sun that is DC, from DC Universe Online to the upcoming Flashpoint event, but what I found relevant to CBM were the teaser styled responses given to questions concerning the upcoming Superman film and Wonder Woman TV Show.

On whether or not the costumes for the upcoming Superman film and Wonder Woman television series would resemble the costumes from the comics, DC's Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras had this to say...

“I haven’t seen anything on ‘Superman. I’ve seen some sketches for the Wonder Woman costume and I will say this today – there is every intent to make them similar. People do these TV shows and these movies because they love the characters. And with DC being able to work much more closely with Warner Bros, I think you’ll be happy with what comes across.”

On what level of involvement DC Comics has with the Superman movie Matt Idelson (Group Editor of the Superman comics) offered the following...

“There’s definitely a connection. Geoff and David talk all the time, so there is interaction.”

Hawksblueyes: Key words... "similar" and..."what comes across." To see what else panel members had to say concerning upcoming DC events, click on the link below.

So the costume will look nothing like the comics?

As far as the Wonder Woman TV show goes, it doesn't matter anymore if they change the suit or not. They've changed the character so much nobody will recognize her anyway. Putting her in the classic WW suit at this point would be an insult to the fans.

Ok, that guy who was interviewed knows next to nothing. But at least one good thing does come out of this revelation- DC has some involvement with the Superman film, that is great news. Hopefully DC can offer some of their know-how for the reboot.

Not that I don't have faith in Snyder and Nolan...but just...I don't want them putting too much of their own spin on the character. I really believe DC needs to have some input on the film and what direction it goes.

But dang I was really hoping we'd hear something new about the Superman film.

@Knightstalker- Agreed, the show sounds lame and doesn't look to be incorporating her Amazonian roots at all.

@Hawks- Nice find!

The costume jer3miah just posted is the one they need to use for Superman. It retains the classic look but with a modern take on it and it gets rid of the "underwear" that so many non-Supes fans can't get past

@Marvel72

Everything is wrong with supermans comic suit.

The Briefs on the outside of the pants look?? That was based on what the comic artists had observed 1920’s and 1930’s Circus performers wearing!!!

I don’t want my 33 year old superman who would have been born in 1978 wearing a costume inspired by a 1925 trapeze artist.

He grew up in current Smallville Kansas USA. He is a dude like you and me, someone we could have been sitting in English class next to. What part of that suggests that he would be inspired to put underpants on the outside of his pants?

Almost anything would look better than the live action superman suits we have been given so far

I liked that last one you posted. I think maybe the a red belt or somthing could replace the red underwear.

So the Wonder Woman costume is going to be similar to which of her several different costumes? Out of DC's big 5 she has had the most costume changes. As for Superman I don't think he needs to have the red "underwear" taken off. Without it his costume looks pretty bland and maybey he thought so to when his costume was created so he could've added it or something. The red "speedos" are different to what people are used to seeing other people wear on a daily basis so maybey the red garment is supposed to be a symbol of alienism protecting his secret identity better. In plus. it's not like the average person doesn't except the idea of Superman wearing that.

@Jer3miah: As long as Christian Bale isn't chubby like the Batman wearing the costume in that last pic. LOL.

That's the essential problem with Superman. Not much about him makes sense to place his story in the present. If a spaceship crashed in Kansas, even in the 70's, the CIA would've been all over that shit. The outfit doesn't make. His "disguise" wouldn't work. With the internet and all, anybody would be able to figure out who superman is.

@lordHuck.

Hm. The one with the Kingdom Come S is out as there is a very specific reason he wears that symbol in those colors in that book, so unless Kansas is gonna get nuked, that's a no.

The second one, all black with silver S and red cape, black/red/silver... Nice for an elseworlds Nazi Supes maybe,(Overman lol) that's a no... the iconic colors must stay in place at least for this movie.

The first Routh variant is horrible, the red stripes on the sleeves make him look like he's sponsored by Nike.

The bottom one is the best but it's still got the red underpants design... they're just trying hard NOT to be red underpants lol.

I have a feeling that the costume is prolly the toughest part of the movie for all concerned, knowing as they do that no matter what they come up with, 50% of us will rip it to shreds lol.

@Frogsplash46 That is an awesome design and I would love to see them do something similar to that.

For Superman, I have fallen in love with the J.J Abrams 'Flyby' design. It looks modern, alien, and just downright cool. That's what I would love to see.

@thisheart okay, I'll bite. I think since Krypton is supposed to be more technologically advanced than we are I can safely say they could add stealth technology to Kal-El's spaceship. And besides that our modern day CIA is pretty incompetent. The internet itself is also a laugh since the most insane conspiracy theories and ideas are born here. That includes the blogosphere.

@LordHuck - I like most of those costumes, but when I look at the regular iconic costume, the new ones seem to be missing something. The 1st new 1 looks like a military ceremonial type. The 2nd is great without the cape. We've all seen that before, but it's not as symbolic/iconic. The 3rd looks mixed with Spidey's costume and looks off. The 4th looks like unfinished patchwork.Routh's suit is a little dark and the symbol is too small. Reeve's looks a little childish, but at the same time just right. I am not sure how you improve it aside from getting somebody who fills it up right. Not sure how they could fix the Underoo problem, or if it really needs to be fixed, but I haven't seen something that is subtle enough without changing the symbolic recognition and iconic status.

Change the boots and belt, use a 3D shield and that's what the new suit should be.

You know, with the newest Wonder Woman costume, I think they easily took ten to fifteen years off the perceived age of the character. She seems younger than Superman and Batman now, even though she's been around (character wise) just as long.

@luckylu No it isn't fine, and it hasn't been fine for a long time. I am tired of them marching out that outdated look for superman on the big screen.

If Superman stands next to Batman or Hal Jordan’s movie costumes in the Pajamas they made Ruth or Reeve wear he is going to look like an Asshole. It wont work on film.

Some shit needs to change

LordHuck: I'm sorry, man, but supes is the most iconic superhero in the world and his suit is a part of that. If they were to use a completely different design, in the film, like the ones you've been posting, it will just make it feel... wrong. It could have the heart, the adventure and all the great things about Superman but change the costume, i would bet money that many moviegoers and fanboys alike will walk out of the movie and think "that was a great movie, but something seemed off..." Routh's costume was good, but it just wasn't right.

@ Slaggathor

If you think the thing that makes superman superman are his underpants, then you are part of the problem.

Think about all the people who wear tight clothes for a living or for fun.

Bobsledders
Speed Skaters
Ski Racers
Scuba Divers
Gymnasts
Modern Trapeze artists
Circus Performers
Pro Wrestlers
Bicycle racers

No one wears the Trunks over tights look anymore..

Because it looks like COLD SHIT POISON.
