SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Says Reboot Is "So Different From Anything I've Ever Done"

James Gunn has shared what makes him so excited about working on Superman: Legacy, revealing that the upcoming DCU reboot is "unlike anything" he's ever done previously...

Superman: Legacy screen tests took place this past weekend, and director James Gunn took to social media shortly after to confirm that they're getting "very close" to finding the actors who will step into the lead roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 filmmaker hasn't commented on exactly who is in contention (the trades believe it's come down to Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet and Tom Brittney for Superman, and Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan or Phoebe Dynevor for Lois), but he did recently indicate that names we haven't heard yet might also be in the mix.

Gunn was asked for an update on his Blue Sky social media account, and while he remained tight-lipped about casting, he did reveal why he's so excited about working on the reboot, noting that it's “so different from anything I’ve ever done” and that “it’s like being a kid again.”

Some are a little concerned that Gunn's style wouldn't seem like the right fit for a character like Superman, but it all depends on how you look at it. We assume he will ease up on the more anarchic tone and juvenile humor of, say, Peacemaker, but Gunn knows how to emotionally engage an audience with stories and character that are full of heart, which should serve the Man of Steel very well.

“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”

Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters in 2025.

That’s a good thing. Lighthearted and raunchy, maybe a little extra violent really doesn’t fit in the Superman corner of the DC universe.

I’m guessing no toilet humor then lol.

Seriously, I’m game to see if he can deliver. Long overdue we have the old Boy Scout back.

@GhostDog - SPOILERS:

Gunn's Superman goes into great lengths in discussing his sensitive nipples and his huge turds.

@Feralwookiee -

"Kryptonian nipples burn in the presence of blue kryptonite."

@GhostDog - I was thinking the yellow sun which gives him his powers would also be the source of his sensitive nips, making it a blessing and a curse.

His huge turds would be explained by simple Kryptonian physiology; they just literally shit bigger than us.
Hey, with great power comes some downsides. *shrugs*

But will they be using YouTube for assistance?

Please be good. I haven’t been as insulted with the DCEU as most have. In fact I like some of those movies quite a bit, but it clearly didn’t work for the majority of people out there. I just want marvel and DC to both be rocking at the same time

@DudeGuy - Agreed!

@DudeGuy - i feel that, i would love them both to be killing it, but i just don't see it happening. Marvel seems like it cashed out. The next ten years might be the era of DC. Hoping for quality stuff from both, but it seems like one or the other at this point.

@DudeGuy - also agreed with that last statement

@DudeGuy - That would've been nice, but Marvel is certainly on the decline and DC never got their shit together to begin with.

Add to that, the general public seems to be over the genre and the movies aren't taking in as much as they used to at the boxoffice; I think both the MCU and DCwhatever will have to start scaling things back.

I’m seriously hoping Gunn knocks it out of the park with this. As a fan of man of steel I am still bummed to see cavil not come back but I’m excited for this fresh take and I hope that he is the one to finally get Superman right.

So no dance off for the final battle? Risky.

If he has never done anything like this, what makes people so confident it will be good? Maybe instead of experimenting with the IP he should hire someone the has done something like it. At this point taking more risks can be fatal for the brand.

In a country like the U.S where immorality and crime is glorified and embraced, and criminals are sympathized for, I'm not sure how Superman would work.

The "American Way" he once stood for is non-existent nowadays.

@DarthAlgar - As Frank Miller would say, that's why they need him. He wouldn't work in a place that was already a utopia.
