Superman: Legacy screen tests took place this past weekend, and director James Gunn took to social media shortly after to confirm that they're getting "very close" to finding the actors who will step into the lead roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 filmmaker hasn't commented on exactly who is in contention (the trades believe it's come down to Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet and Tom Brittney for Superman, and Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan or Phoebe Dynevor for Lois), but he did recently indicate that names we haven't heard yet might also be in the mix.
Gunn was asked for an update on his Blue Sky social media account, and while he remained tight-lipped about casting, he did reveal why he's so excited about working on the reboot, noting that it's “so different from anything I’ve ever done” and that “it’s like being a kid again.”
Some are a little concerned that Gunn's style wouldn't seem like the right fit for a character like Superman, but it all depends on how you look at it. We assume he will ease up on the more anarchic tone and juvenile humor of, say, Peacemaker, but Gunn knows how to emotionally engage an audience with stories and character that are full of heart, which should serve the Man of Steel very well.
“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters in 2025.
