Superman: Man of Tomorrow, which is not an origin story, is set in the early days after Clark Kent's arrival in Metropolis as he reveals himself as Superman for the first time to battle both Lobo and Parasite.

Explains Sheridan, "Our guiding principle with Man of Tomorrow is that we were going to look at it like an indie art house movie and not shy away from the sort of live action-ness of it. I can understand why people would be a little thrown, because it’s very different from the types of movies we normally make in animation. There’s a lot of people talking and figuring thing out together in rooms with two people having conversations."

“There’s a scene in the movie,” he adds, “with Martian Manhunter and Clark sitting at the Kents’ kitchen table. If I had gone in and pitched, ‘Okay, it’s Clark Kent and Martian Manhunter. They’ve met for the first time and they’re sitting and having tea!’ — that’s the kind of thing you’d expect from any good character-driven live action story. So why don’t we do it in animation? Why don’t we lean into character and reveal through conversation rather than just big plot action stuff? Now this movie has big action, but we couldn’t have made this movie if we didn’t allow Clark and Lois to be having a conversation in his apartment and that be a thing that really changes the dynamic of the plot that informs what he’s going to do for the rest of the movie. Those things we leaned into.”

As they did with the character’s inherent hopefulness in a world of darkness. Sheridan explains, “It’s the kind of Superman story we all love, which is really upbeat and optimistic, but that something optimistic and upbeat grows out of some challenging circumstances. I don’t know how you can think of the character of Superman and not consider the hope and optimism that he has always represented. Having said that, I think there’s room in the great big multiverse for every angle on a Superman story.”

I just watched the new justice league dark movie and was pretty good from the past few movies I have seen

Love this movie and it’s take on Superman. Back to basics.

@BlackBeltJones - Hopefully JSA WW2 makes up for Wonder Woman 1984 (seems like the focus will be on Wonder Woman with the JSA as guest stars), same way Man Of Tomorrow made up for Man Of Steel.

@dracula - Really its focusing on wonder woman? Excited for the trailer to drop. Batman Mask Of The Dragon is the first dc animated movie I didn't watch on day one of it dropping. But the JSA looks right up my alley.

Hope they realize at WB WW84's performance wasn't to do with the character and more to do with the bad directing.

@aresww3 - not confirmed just my person thoughts. Like really who thinks of Wonder Woman when they think the JSA. Technically the trinity were members but yeah, dont think they were ever a big part so why include her over other members like Hawkgirl

Man Of Steel but done with actual competence

DC has always shined brightest in animation, ever since Batman The Animated Series, nobody has been able t reach the standard set by DC's shows

If WB wants to do animated DC series for HBO Max, I hope they would use this as the foundation. It's a shade overstuffed, but it nails the foundation and tone (and I like the animation aesthetic, which is often so tricky to get right).

@Spock0Clock - I'd love to see a DC animated Multiverse:

~ A new series in the Timm-verse, following on from TNBA and Batman Beyond.

~ More Static Shock & Teen Titans.

~ Reboot 'The Zeta Project.'

~ Give the 'JL: Dark' team an entire show of their own.

~ Young Justice and spinoffs of that show.

~ Expand on the Arkham-verse as seen in 'Assault on Arkham.'

~ Green Lantern Corps series (like Emerald Knights)

~ Comedic shows like Brave & The Bold.

@GothamSon - While I love a lot of those older shows, I'd like them to currently focus on just making one animated universe as good as possible, and to start fresh (like Man of Tomorrow did).

Plus, with animation, there's a real problem of crossovers having clashing styles. When Young Justice show up in Teen Titans Go, fine, it's a gag in a comedy show. But it just irks me personally to see something like this in any material that's even slightly serious:

@GothamSon - that would be great

Would love to see Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett work on a Wonder Woman series with Susan Eiseberg. Hope the BMTAS revival happens.

We seriously need to know whats going on with Teen Titans, they said if the Go movie did well, they would talk about it, it made a decent profit and still nothing. Really at this point id be happy with them doing an animated movie set in that continuity. (Finally take down Slade)

Zeta Project seems unlikely, not a comic character and doesnt seem like many know about it.

The DCAU already has a good amount of JLD members in it, all we would need is Bruce Timm's take on Constantine

Well we have Young Justice, and yeah if Greg Weisman cant bring back Spectacular Spiderman, a Justice League spin off would be great.

Love Arkham but think that continuity is over.

Cant wait for the green lantern show, hopefully it leads to Hal, John and maybe Kyle getting movies.

Too bad Justice League Action was cancelled, it was no Brave And The Bold, but what I have seen was fun.

@Spock0Clock - Yeah some crossovers have not aged well :D

But a DCAU multiverse would work very well, since their animated output has always been DC's most successful brand (critically/ culturally)

@dracula -

~ Rebooting Teen Titans is a no-brainer since it's DC's most popular cartoon outside of BTAS, IMO.

~ I think Rocksteady's Suicide Squad is a direct continuation of the Arkhamverse? Would be a great opportunity to expand that setting in animated form.

~ JL Action wasn't as strong as it could have been. I liked the character designs, but it felt like a 'Brave and the Bold' spinoff.

@Spock0Clock - Absolutely. I think, A Flash, Wonder Woman, Shazam, Superman and Batman series, all new, is just what HBO max needs.

I wouldn't mind them carrying on Vixen. Then carry it into a JL series. They need content and the animated movies are just like 2hours long.

I'd just shut down the whole arrowverse and spend the budget high quality writers for animated series.

@GothamSon -

Yeah if it werent for that other show, im sure it would have been brought back by now

Yeah Action could have been better, although something like brave and the bold isnt that what you want?

I've read most of DC's Future State event and Tim Sheridan's books (Teen Titans and Shazam) are 2 of the best from the entire line up
And this movie was solid too!
