Zack Snyder Explains The Reason For The Mass Carnage In MAN OF STEEL

Much has been made of the level of destruction and collateral damage in the finale of Zack Snyder's Superman reboot, and now in a new interview with The Japan Times, the director offers up an explanation. "It’s a way of recounting the myth.”..

Probably the most discussed/debated element of Man of Steel was the high level of destruction present in the final battle in Metropolis between Superman and Zod's forces. Some felt that Superman just wouldn't allow so many civilian losses (not that he had much choice in the matter..but that's a whole other article!) and that just on every level it went a bit far. Well in a recent interview with the Japan Times to promote the movie there, Snyder was asked why he felt the need to destroy so much, causing so many (off-screen) deaths; and here is his reply.

“I wanted the movie to have a mythological feeling. In ancient mythology, mass deaths are used to symbolize disasters. In other countries like Greece and Japan, myths were recounted through the generations, partly to answer unanswerable questions about death and violence. In America, we don’t have that legacy of ancient mythology. Superman (who first appeared in ‘Action Comics’ in 1938) is probably the closest we get. It’s a way of recounting the myth.”

If you happen to be one of the people that took issue with the death and destruction, does Snyder's explanation satisfy you? Sound off below.

People still bother with this one ?

I can't see any problem, really ...
They never showed the victims, only buldings collapsing.

It felt (for me) like it was some kind of video game.

I never understood people complaints about collateral damage.

Mass deaths ? Really ? Where ?

The destruction in this movie was absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary. It's even more ridiculous with the fact that Superman killed Zod over the lives of 3 individuals standing in front of him.. when he himself killed millions just carelessly flying through buildings.

It was reality.... It was a war going on between him and Zod/ Zod's forces...

I dare you to try and lead me away from the place you was hiding in. I'd burn that shit to the ground just to teach you a lesson.

The universe isn't made out of marshmallows and candy canes. Things get messed up in battles.

@GizmoEl

really ? I don't wanna be a defender here, but did they actually showed someone died (during his flying through the building scenes) ?

p.s. yes, the destruction was ridiculous. But that's another story.

Aka I want to give the fanboy the visuals of Supes comic book power level on screen through gratuitous disaster porn.

@GizmoEl Do you mean the same hapless millions of civilians either evacuated or killed by the World Engine prior to Superman engaging Zod in a quite obviously deserted and destroyed area of Metropolis?
I would think not ;)

Please post one gif where Supes just flew threw 5 buildings carelessly. You cant cause it never happened.
If they wanted to show people dying in a collapsing building they would have. They showed people getting pounded by the gravity machine and dying. No one died in those collapsing buildings.

People just dreamed what they really wanted to see instead of actually watching the movie.

I will take MOS battles over any of the kiddy battles in other CBM anyday cause they were real threats and no pumped up wanna be threats that turn out to be just people just hand shaking.

I think partly it was for the sequel, but i think it was also because... well look at the Justice League cartoons and the Superman comics. People take everything SO literally now that a sequel won't even touch on that kind of fight. Look at Avengers. ALL those buildings, all those chituari... not one death? Hell that giant slug thing landed on an apartment complex. Surely that whole floor died.

what i think ... defenders of this movie are eating their own tale. They shouldn't even bother with the accusations.
Did we even saw somebody died during the destruction of the Metropolis ? I don't think so. There were only buildings collapsing, nothing more.

In fact the only one who had near dead experience was Fishburne female coworker ... but she is still alive, isn't she ?

As for the Superman killing Zod scene. I can dig it.
Still wish it would happened in front of like 10 to 15 people, not just 3.

@GizmoEl i thought the destruction was definitely necessary. this movies tone wasn't like Avengers or Pac Rim where its lighthearted so the destruction somewhat meant very little, MOS was supposed to make you feel bad about all the people that died. it was supposed to make you realize that clark is just startin out & all the little mistakes he makes actually mean something. if he loses focus for one second & gets punched & blasted into a building, that's his burden. he was responsible for those people dying, which is something that he knows he has to learn from.

& as for killing Zod, there's no way he couldn't. He had to kill Zod. No jail is gonna hold him. & Zod was using his heat vision on a FAMILY. the movie made sure you were supposed to understand that. It was a father, a mother, & a son. just like the family Clark had. He had to kill Zod so that they could LIVE. these arent just some objects that Clark has to defend, these are actual people with lives.

Clark knows that death is meaningful. His dad dying had a huge effect on him, & the film shows that killing Zod really [frick]ed w/ Clark. He immediately started balling & screaming after he killed Zod because he knew that he had to kill that last Kryptonian besides himself to save the rest of humanity from Zod's destruction.

the destruction in this film's point was to make you feel bad & really evaluate what death & destruction means, not just something that you can 'wow' at as you stuff your face with popcorn

Supes kills Zod in the originals no1 gives 2 shits. He does it now & every1 is on some stupid shit. The Avengers had deaths too.The destruction was there also just not as focused on.U can't sit there n say The Hulk didn't cause damage jumping through buildings (which he totally did). The [frick]in Leviathans sure as [frick] caused damage also.I swear it's all just biased fans starting shit n nip picking the hell out of a film mainly cuz it's DC.U guys remind me of the CinemaSins guy when he says "DC Comics" as a sin. GizmoEl - 8/29/2013, 10:58 AM
Just because we didn't see any deaths doesn't mean it didn't happen. You're saying this in an article where the director said that "mass deaths are used to symbolize disasters."

I understand that superheroes throwing down will have casualties. That's understandable. But Man of Steel was over the top in my opinion. And clearly others think so too otherwise the director wouldn't be addressing it.

So to describe a character who's mythologic purpose is to show the power of an individual to stop mass-death, you show him failing to stop mass-death?

[frick]ing BOO!

I love how much SludgeTroll is so concerned about DC films lately.

As for the topic, in Star Wars Vader blew up a planet and Luke blew up the Death Star.

Think of how many lives were killed there.
knocturnalzen10
knocturnalzen10 - 8/29/2013, 11:00 AM
thought he would've done a better way of explaining this smh
i precieved the destructions was because of clark's inexperience, he basically was thrown in to battle an he just learned to fly. he basically was fighting not some much to save but to win, so it's suppose to show a learning curve for him.
as well i dunno what people expect a city to look like after micheal an lucifer have a scrum ..................think about it

The problem isn't that 100,00 people die, it's that no one seems to notice or care.
