TMNT: MUTANT MAYHEM Closes In On $50M With Strong Box Office Hold, But Can't Catch Billion Dollar BARBIE

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has climbed to the No. 3 spot in the U.S. after dropping just 56.5% from Sunday, but Barbenheimer still rules the box office as Barbie officially hits $1B.

Despite heading into its third week on general release, Greta Gerwig's Barbie has held on to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office after officially passing $1 billion worldwide, followed by Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer at No. 2.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, meanwhile, has climbed to No. 3 after grossing a solid $3.7M on Monday, marking an impressive -56.5% from Sunday. Its domestic cume now sits at $47M.

The Seth Rogen produced animated reboot is sure to benefit from positive word-of-mouth thanks to its “A” CinemaScore and 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also has a relatively modest $70 million budget, which means it won't have to take in nearly as much to turn a profit as other recent animated features such as Pixar’s $200 million-budgeted Elemental and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($100M).

If you'd like to find out what I made of TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, you can check out the new episode of the Roll Credits podcast below.

“After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will voice the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The cast also includes Jackie Chan as Splinter, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

The Turtles movie is a flop, the only thing that's saving it is the merchandise. If this was any other movie, specifically a DC or Sony live action spider-verse movie, the everyone would be commenting on how poorly it's doing.

I haven’t seen Barbie and have no opinion on the movie itself, but it seems as if what they did right that is leading to this success is that they embraced the long time fans of the brand.

I’m in my 40s and pretty much every woman I know who is in their 30s and 40s has seen this. I’m not discounting any writing, directing or performances, as those couldn’t be terrible with such a massive success, but they obviously catered to the base of people who grew up with Barbie.

I wish the people running Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and other scifi/fantasy properties could recognize this. Cater to your base and make a quality product. That’s what leads to success.

@mountainman - To tie into this article, TMNT too. There are many adults in their 30s and 40s who now have kids that grew up loving this brand. They would absolutely jump at the chance to go see a version that is aimed at them, and they would take their kids who would likely get into the brand too.

But all these creative types try to reimagine these legacy IPs. They try to appeal to “modern audiences”. And many times it fails to achieve massive success because they are leaving the original fans behind.

@mountainman - Agreed. Also Barbie has been feminist for at least as long as I have been alive. Just turned 40 as well. My sisters had Barbies. I remember seeing doctor Barbie, and tons of other versions. So they are sticking close to what Barbie is.

Also half the population grew up with this character so it's no surprise it's successful. I'm happy WB is catching a win after so many failures. I'm happy people are going back to theaters. (My favorite pastime) I'm also happy to see amazing set design. (REAL SETS NOT GREEN SCREEN AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE)

But unfortunately this movie like seemingly everything else in modern times finds itself in the middle of the cringiest culture war ever. We are truly living in goofy times. Two things can be true. A movie can make political points, weave it into a plot without ham fisting it. It can also go over the mark, and take you out of the film. A fanbase can overreact to what they see in the film. They can also just critique a film.

I saw it with the fam. My youngest daughter loves it. My older daughter was meh on it. My wife thought it was leaning to heavily on current feminist messaging which veers into misandry. I thought it started off great, but then got a bit odd. Gosling was awesome in it though. If I watch it again. It'll be for the set design and Gosling.

@DarthOmega - My wife wanted to see it, but we aren’t going to the movies with a newborn at home. I bet we will watch together when it’s on Max later this year.

A few thoughts:

- Yes Barbie has always been feminist and that should have been expected from this movie.
- Ben Shapiro is an idiot and really did himself a disservice by doing his lengthy review. Like I get the YouTube review people, but Ben is just click chasing with this and made himself look dumb
- I’ve heard mixed messages about how much this movie inserts modern messaging. Like I said I expect a pro-woman and feminist angle out of it. I’ll wait and form my own opinions as I’ve heard thoughts on all sides of this
- One thing I have heard, from both men and women seeing it, is that Ryan Gosling’s Ken steals the show. As a huge Gosling fan, I am quite looking forward to seeing his performance.

@mountainman - If they make a Ken sequel I'm down. I have never been the biggest Gosling fan. I always thought he was just meh. But then I saw him on an episode of SNL on a sketch called papyrus. It was so damn funny. I think he should lean into comedy films a lot more.

Ben Shapiro just wants to get clicks. He doesn't care if his predictions are wrong. He doesn't care if you like watch or hate watch his content. As long as he gets views so he can sell his products and other ads.

Also I agree with my wife. I think the film did veer into misandry. Even Margot Robbie said something similar to this about the first part of the film. But I think that was the point. The film did try to find some middle ground, but I still think it missed the mark. Judging by the whole "Incel" to anyone with a slight critique of the films messaging, or people who just reflexively hate it without watching, it seems we still have a long way to go.
