THE FLASH: Greg Finley Cast As Supervillain 'Girder'

The CW's upcoming small-screen take on the fastest man alive has added yet another DC Comics villain to its roster in the form of Tony Woodward, also known as Girder. Greg Finley (Star Crosses) will play the character, who has ties to Barry Allen's past..

Zap2it are reporting that Star Crossed actor Greg Finley has joined the cast of the CW's Flash tv series as Tony Woodward, aka Girder. It seems the S.T.A.R. Labs explosion in the pilot episode gives Woodward the ability to transform his skin into metal, and in episodes 6 and 7 of the series he'll be giving Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) plenty of headaches...especially when you take into account that Woodward used to bully young Barry back when they were in school. Finley has also appeared in the likes of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Law & Order: SVU, Emily Owens, MD and House. The Flash races to our screens on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

I wonder how he will look/ turnout. They probably wont go as extreme (in size) as he was in his pre new 52 comics appearance, rather his new 52 appearance, muscular build and relatively tall just not a Hulk size character

@contemplator

Marvel and DC have both blatantly copied each other. This is undeniable, and your failure to realize this shows your lack of comic book knowledge..

Seems like a terrible casting. Why cannot CW break from their formula for once? They only think about woman viewership when they cast actors.

Nice! Girder! Man, they are definitely on the Geoff Johns train, aren't they?

I guess it makes sense that they'd have to mine as many of the physically-deformed Rogues as they can, given the premise of the series. I'm thinking Tar Pit isn't too far behind.

But making Girder into someone who bullied Barry, while clearly taking a page from the Spider-Man playbook (in mining teenage trauma for adventure stories), isn't actually ripping off Spider-Man.

How many of Peter's rogues bullied him in high school? Flash Thompson was Pete's number-one nemesis as a teen, and yet he ended up just becoming a supporting character for years after burying the hatchet with Peter (I mean, sure, he ended up becoming Venom, too... but that was WAY later, and that Venom was a hero). J. Jonah Jameson kinda bullied him, and was kinda responsible for the Spider-Slayers and Scorpion... but that's a hell of a stretch. The fact is, almost none of Peter's regular rogues gallery knew him personally as Peter... except for Harry Osborn, of course. His best friend.

This is why the movies had to keep manufacturing the villains' connections to Peter Parker. Personal tension between the hero and villain makes for much more compelling drama than the hero just beating up a random guy robbing a bank. They do it in superhero movies all the time, even when they shouldn't.

The whole "hero knows the villain thing" isn't exclusive to Spider-Man, anyway... so how does that make The Flash a Spidey rip-off? Because there's a sub-plot involving the character's high-school years? Does Spider-Man have the copyright on the very CONCEPT of a superhero having gone to high school and been bullied?

Get over it, guys. He's a young guy, and he's a superhero... the show's airing on the CW, for Christ's sake. It was bound to come up sooner or later.

Can't wait to see what the series has in store!

@Marxman12: Idk... Mirror Master is gonna be tough. When you actually stop and think about what his powers are... they're insane. By which, of course, I mean completely ludicrous. He can travel through mirrors. How the hell does that even work?!?

The old Flash T.V. show did a Mirror Master episode (with David Cassidy playing the character, for some reason), but they basically played him as a guy with a hologram projector. This new series is so obviously oriented towards out-there sci-fi, though, that the NEW one might have to be a metahuman who can manipulate mirrors or reflections or something. But one way or another, to work in a T.V. show, his powers are probably gonna have to be completely re-imagined... 'cause it's more than a little ridiculous what he can do in the comic books.

(But hey, they are DEFINITELY doing Captain Cold in the first season, at least... AND he seems to have a cold gun rather than cold powers! So that should make for a decent consolation...)

Hate the bully angle. Kind of lessens te viciousness of the villian. Te whole bully angle makes it cheesy for some reason. I love Girder and his look. Hopefully he doesn't look like colossus form x men an looks like his scary looking comic book depiction. But...knowing CW he won't. Cast a good looking dude and altered his powers...he can't unchange his metal form in the comics he's always metal

DC has blatantly kissed Marvel's ass for the better part of the past 50 years? Hawkeye came after Green Arrow, Thor came after Superman/Shazam, Scarlet Witch came after Zatanna (I know, that's stretching it, but DC only has one female mage), Hulk's physique was clearly based on Solomon Grundy, Quicksilver came after Flash, Daredevil came after Flash (his costume is a ripoff), Black Panther came after Wildcat, Ant-Man came after Atom, Iron Man came after Batman, Vision came after Red Tornado, Black Widow came after Black Canary (Remove BC's scream and they're practically the same), Wonder Man looks similar to Captain Atom (but I'm not sure who came first), Mr. Fantastic came after Elongated Man (and he conveniently married someone named Sue), Dr. Strange could be Marvel's version of Dr. Fate, and I'm sure there's many other instances of Marvel characters copying DC. The only time DC blatantly copied Marvel (in comics, not TV or movies) is when they created Aquaman, who I believe came out a few years after Namor.

@GAThrawnIGF

They both do it but Marvel has definitely copied DC more. Some of the one's you named in your post aren't copies though. Iron Man definitely took a lot of inspiration form Batman but he really grew into a different character. Also Vision is kinda similar to martian manhunter as well.
