THE FLASH Star Sasha Calle Shares The Importance Of Being Able To Play The First Latin Supergirl

The Flash will bring a new Kryptonian superhero into the DCEU with Sasha Calle's Supergirl set to take centre stage. Now, the actor has opened up on what exactly being a Latin Girl of Steel means to her.

There's a lot of intrigue surrounding The Flash, especially as the expectation is the movie will end with the Scarlet Speedster creating a new DC Extended Universe. In that world, the SnyderVerse will be sidelined, with Michael Keaton replacing Ben Affleck as Batman and Sasha Calle stepping in for Henry Cavill's Superman as the Girl of Steel, Supergirl.

The fact Warner Bros. has cast a Latina actor as the character is definitely significant, and a huge step forward in bringing some much-needed diversity into the DCEU.

Talking to V Magazine (via CBR), Calle reflected on being shown a scene of her playing Supergirl by director Andy Muschetti while on set, explaining it was then that the significance of what she was doing hit home. "Representation in the entertainment industry really matters, and I'm super honored, honestly [to be the first Latina Supergirl]," she explains. "There was a moment when we were shooting, when Andy was like, 'Hey, come over here and watch this scene on the playback monitor.'"

"And I go over and I see her [Supergirl], and she's in her full glory. And suddenly, I got really emotional. Because I'm looking at that, and I'm like, 'Wow, I wish I would have had this when I was little.' It meant a lot to me," Calle continued. "I turned into child Sasha watching this person. So it's really important. And I'm really happy and really thankful to DC and Warner Bros. for doing this now. It's so cool that we're doing this, and, you know, it's about time."

Aside from how the character has been portrayed in the comic books (which were created at a time when anyone who wasn't white was typically depicted as a stereotype), there are absolutely zero reasons why Supergirl can't be Latin. The hero doesn't have to be blonde-haired and blue-eyed, and based on the set photos we've seen, Calle's take on the Girl of Steel looks awesome.

Oh, and before anyone complains too much, it's worth noting that this take on Supergirl is clearly inspired by the version from the Injustice comic books. While she was Superman's daughter in those, everything from the hairstyle to the costume has been translated to screen by Calle in The Flash.

The Flash is set to be released on theaters on June 23, 2023.

@KWilly - Not sure why WB even entertained continuity with his character after his first offense.

@TheHumanSpider2 - You mean besides Tessa Thompson, Kevin Conroy, and like half the cast of CW?

@Reeds2Much - KEVIN CONROY!? I didnt know that.
And I meant the LEAD in a super hero movie (Ezra already played the character 5 years ago in a supporting role)...and in movies.
I should've been more specific.
Point is, Ezra and the studio dont seem to understand how important what he is doing is, he is going to be the role model for a lot of kids who might be feeling discriminated...and he is a complete mess.

@Waddles - As you said, he wasnt the hero...

@TheHumanSpider2 - Well, I'm not queer but I feel ashamed of Ezra Miller as well so, you know, unity and understanding.

if she is an alien from krypton how could she be latina? On the very negative end there will be jokes about a latina playing an illegal alien again. probably not the brightest idea DC came up with.

@Nunyabiz - Well, some people have been making jokes about how America Chavez's powers are crossing borders. They always seem to find a way to ridicule us Latino's but I'm not salty about it, I actually laughed when I saw that.

Andy, it was so hard to cast an argentinian for the role?

Isn’t Supergirl Kal-El’s cousin?

Did I miss somewhere that Kal-El was Latino.
Then again I didn’t know that Kryptonians identified as an Earth race.

"BuT ShE iS KryPToNiAn, nOt LaTInO"

That's obviously not the point. It is kid Sasha and other kids seeing superheroes on screen that look like them. Thought that was obvious now.

Anyways. Now that I think about, I'm kinda surprised Supergirl is the first superhero portrayed by a Latino. Thought there were already, but I can't really think of one (and El Muerte doesn't count).

@bkmeijer1 - I find it interesting that people here often say, “But seeing (whatever group) seeing themselves represented is a good thing.”

Yet there are so many sub groups that are not represented, Native Americans for example.

Then the question must be asked, do we change all of our characters to accommodate every group and sub group or wouldn’t it be better to actually develop actual organic charters from those groups instead of just race swapping?
