BOX OFFICE: Start Getting Excited For Part Three! THOR: THE DARK WORLD Hits $500M Worldwide

THOR earned a little under $450 million at the worldwide box office back in 2011, but the sequel has now surpassed that by hitting $500 million! While The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will likely make a dent this weekend, it's fair to say this instalment is already successful enough to guarantee a third.

It's been a good year for Disney. After the success of both Iron Man 3 and Monsters University, Thor: The Dark World is yet another tick in the win column for the studio. The Alan Taylor helmed sequel crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office yesterday and has been the #1 movie internationally since opening over three weeks ago. With $152 million domestically and $352 million overseas, it's current global cume is $504 million. This means that it has already passed the totals of both the first Thor ($449 million) and Captain America: The First Avenger ($371 million). The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will undoubtedly slow down the God of Thunder's momentum, but Marvel Studios are surely now thinking up plans for a third instalment...

Marvel’s "Thor: The Dark World" continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s "Thor" and "Marvel’s The Avengers," Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

STARRING:

Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Tom Hiddleston as Loki
Anthony Hopkins as Odin
Natalie Portman as Jane Foster
Zachary Levi as Fandral
Ray Stevenson as Volstagg
Tadanobu Asano as Hogun
Jaimie Alexander as Sif
Idris Elba as Heimdall
Christopher Eccleston as Malekith

Movie was real good..not great but improved on the first.
The only actual great Marvel films are Iron Man 1 & The Avengers.

The others are solid but I hope they all get better.
The less said about Iron Man 3 the better. ( it sucks. )

Great news! This movie was one hell of a ride, despite it's somewhat slow beginning. Oh, and Alan Taylor has to come back for the third! Now, bring on Amora and Surtur!

Shouldn't be too hard to set up a 3rd Thor film. The plot should be pretty straightforward and the villains to choose from.

Still can't believe a comic I read when no knew who Thor was is so popular now. I thought they just put out the comic in New York for years because "we still have that one that sells each month in Virginia. "

I felt the comedy was enough in Thor but the correction would have been to make the movie slightly longer and give more of a back story to the dark elves and a little more screen time for other asgardians like Frigga, Sif and the Warriors 3. That being said Captain America seems to be shaping up to be very serious and it is said to be the biggest influence on Avengers 2. I would think Avengers 2 will be more serious considering the villian so maybe they are keeping things light in these movies knowing the direction the movies will be heading into. Just a thought.

So Thor has a chance of hitting the $600 million mark. That's great.

Thor 3 will obviously pick up from the cliffhanger from Thor: TDW. Hope they add Enchantress, Executioner and Sultur. Good for them.

@nomis I think they should put the motion capture dots on Chris's head and CGI the helmet, if it is too damn cumbersome to wear. I mean in this age where you can jump from world to world and cgi every detail in them, you can't do the helm?

Catching Fire is going to thump this movie....dont expect much from this or any other movie until Hobbit 2

***

And Hobbit will thump Catching Fire. Besides, TDW should make another $100M. It's predicted to become the 3rd highest Marvel Studios movie, behind only to Avengers and IM3, when it's all said and done.

I pretty much think this movie is crap but I'm glad it's another win for the superhero genre. I just hope this phase 2 starts kicking in full gear.

@Powercosmic I never said it was fact. Putting words in my mouth simply shows your insecurity in regards to someone else's OPINION about a movie which I find to be POOR

@MARVELPSYCHO79

The first Hunger Games film made a lot of big money coming out in the spring season (March) but it was never called a summer film. Same with Alice in Wonderland.
Captai America comes out in the US the first week of April and late march in the UK,
so it will hardly be considered a summer film no matter how much it makes.

Still wondering why Marvel doesn't seem to have much confidence in what looks to be the best phase 2 film when they don't plan to release it in the summer.

Fast Fast 5 came out in late April,a week before Thor, so it was able to claim to be the start of that summer season. Fast and Furious (the fourth film) came out in early April 2009,made a lot of money, but was still looked at as a spring film.

Great news! I'm most looking forward to Thor 3.

After Malekith's scheme it's too soon for Surtur. Critics will have a field day with another end-of-the-universe story. Thor might even need his buds the Avengers when Surtur comes around. In Simonson's story he needed all the help he could get.

We've got Loki on the throne - there's plenty to work with right there. Make the story more personal not less. I think they need to focus on the characters. Bring in Amora, Skurge, Hela, Karnilla and freak-ing BALDER already!
