The overseas totals are coming in and Thor and Captain America are in a close race for openings in each of the countries they have premiered in!

Despite early estimates that Captain America had opened with $65,800,00 making it open almost $100,000 higher than Thor. Boxofficemojo.com has listed the actual openings for this years comicbook fare as totaling:

While it was thought that Captain America would have done more domestically its daily total dropped dramatically this week -60.7% to lose its lead on Thor and fall behind Thor by 2 million in 10 day totals.
Thor dropped only -47.2% after 10 days for $119,455,352 to Cap's $117,421,571
At this pace Cap should end up at 170 plus million just behind Wolverine as Marvel's number ten bread winner all-time!

While money is not the only determining factor for a films success as seen in Rottentomatoes.com user ratings Thor and Cap are in a basic tie behind X-men first class.

This rating puts all but Green Lantern as "Fresh". And GL's being included in Time magazine's top 10 all time worst blockbusters does not help the movies overseas outlook. Reviews are subjective and lets face it ratings do not pay the bills.

If Captain America can get a decent total overseas, all Marvel films can be considered a success.This leaves Green Lantern as the only disappointment of this years superhero releases for DC.

Thor on the other hand has passed Wolverine($179,883,157) domestically even though Wolvie has a bigger fan base. Making Thor Marvel's #8 film domestically and #3 all time non-sequel release.With Captain America Lagging behind at home and not shutting out the Son of Odin across the pond. Now even more than last week it can be said:

Who cares what the opening weekend was. It's such a terrible habit we are all in with putting that importance on those first few days. Cause if a movie doesn't make a shit ton of money right out of the gate, it somehow translates into people's minds that it's not any good.

Money does not equal quality, and vice versa.

It's a real shame movies don't get the chance any longer to develop legs and succeed on word of mouth.

At no. 3 in North America this weekend (July 29-31), Chris Evans-Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger collected $24.9 million according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. For comparison's sake: Captain America's domestic total currently stands at $116.77 million after ten days, placing it behind Thor's $119.5 million at the same point. Throughout the week Captain America had been ahead of Thor, but whereas Captain America was down a hefty 62% compared to opening weekend, Thor was down only 47% on its second weekend out.Sorry guys but movies only go down after the first two weeks and Cap was not even #1 this week.

Overseas, Captain America added $48.5 million in 30 territories, for a worldwide total of $170.27m. For comparison's sake: In 56 markets, Thor opened with $89.2m internationally in early May, though figures are somewhat skewed higher for Captain America because of the Labor Day holiday.

So Cap had the benefit of the equal to a memorial day opening overseas and as you can see in the article in all markets we have stats for Thor leads in total. I love the Captain America movie (seeing it again tommorow) But unless it does a Titanic-like turn around by word of mouth Thor will have a higher total.

@CraptainAmerica for opening and 2nd weekend. :)

Great analysis @Bodwulf. I agree that Thor is the #1 CBM of the year despite Cap still being in theaters. This is nothing to sneeze at as Cap is doing well and is another win for Marvel and a validation that it's studio is on to a winning formula with its properties.

it was also the first superhero movie this summer. by the end of the summer, im sure there were some people out there who were sick of spending money at the theater, COULDNT spend anymore at the theater, or who were sick of superheroes.

Captain America didn't make as much as Thor in it's second weekend because Thor's second weekend had no realistic competition.

Being as close as it is, though, Cap can still come out on top.

I mean, Thor didn't make close to what Wolverine did in it's first two weekends, but eventually passed Wolverine's entire run in just 12 weeks, despite Wolverine having been open for 22 weeks.

How? By taking in more money DURING THE WEEKDAYS. Each monday through thursday total surpassed the same week in Wolverine's run.

And Cap so far looks like it could have the power to do the same to Thor. (Actually already did so in the first week.)

As for internationally, apples to oranges my friend. As you said, Thor opened to 56 territories by it's second weekend, whereas Cap was only open in 30 -- it has a more staggered release than Thor had, with Cap opening in new countries almost every other weekend through October instead of all at once. We probably won't know its full international total until November or even December.

Now, I won't say that it WILL beat Thor, but I think has a more sporting chance that you suggest.

Way too premature, at least domestically.

Thor had X-Men, Kung Fu Panda 2, Pirates 4, Super 8 and GL to go up against after it's release.

Cowboys & Aliens and Smurfs did not have a big opening even compared to GL. The only major new releases in Caps way at this point are Rise of the Apes and Conan. Conan looks like a huge bomb to me (although Apes looks really good). I think Cap can hover in the top 10 for quite a while.

Sorry this is silly, still to early, Cap has nearly caught up a couple of times, so really its not over til the fat [Asgardian] lady sings. ps I'm fine with Thor making more money I like him a little more then Cap and I think the Cap movie was a little better made I still liked Thor the Movie better.
Actually its probable going to be very close.

Well, It is 09/02/2011 as I write this . I was excited when I wrote this article. Made my case quite clearly (I thought) and when you look at films it is easy to tell how they will finish.
1st week is the big week
2nd week is gonna drop 50% and the week after 50%
3rd "word of mouth" films like The Help, are rare and no comicbook film comes back week higher and higher in total.
