THOR: RAGNAROK Director Taika Waititi Assures Fans The Movie Is "Not Really A Comedy"

Visually, Thor: Ragnarok is a Marvel Studios movie like no other, but will it be a full-blown comedy? Director Taika Waititi has shed some light on the tone and the surprising inspiration he found...

There's been a lot of talk about Thor: Ragnarok embracing a more comedic tone, something which makes sense given director Taikia Waititi's work on movies like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. However, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker was quick to point out that the third instalment in the Thor franchise will not be a full on comedy!

"It’s not really a comedy," he explains. "There are some really great moments we’re going to have in the film. Knowing that it was Bruce Banner and Thor on kind of a road trip journey, that lends itself to a tone because those guys are both really funny. I was like you gotta exploit Chris’ comic abilities. He’s so good and underutilized in that department. He’s legitimately one of the funniest things in this film." It sounds like Thor: Ragnarok will find a good balance then and that's no bad thing.

Interestingly, the filmmaker went on to reveal that the tone of the movie is possibly closest to Big Trouble in Little China, the beloved John Carpenter movie which has become a cult classic since 1986.

"Big Trouble in Little China was one of those films where Jack Burton is a buffoon but he’s lovable and you’re with him the entire way. I thought Thor has got to be the one you want to be with in every scene." What do you guys think of these latest comments? Let us know down below.

Sweet. I'm so down for this. Waititi is one of the best directors out there, and I have complete confidence in this project.

@SOVAnerd -

They really need to do Ragnarok well, otherwise it'll be incredibly underwhelming. Ragnarok should be our first taste of how the destruction/danger in Infinity War will be handled, and i want it to be shocking and have Heimdall and Odin die amongst others.

@Spider2YBanana - We should get a teaser early April. Probably an extended or alternative teaser with GOTG 2.

I'm a fan of marvel movies, but it feels like they are backpeddling after the reaction to the over-the-top costumes (Check the Marvel facebook page and a bunch of people disliked the overly colourful looks and remarks about comedy). We've had many comments by those involved proclaiming it as a comedy and stating it was a buddy-movie.

I'm personally hoping that the comedy is primarily the middle segment of the movie. That the film will open with Thor down on his luck, encounter Banner and have some comedy scene where they escape the planet and get to Earth. Then have a darker interpretation of Ragnarok at the end, potentially Thor getting sent to the fire demons and fighting Surtur before escaping and having a battle to save Asgard.

Comedy can work, as it has done in the other Marvel movies to varying extents, but it needs to be timed and executed well. Despite the human stuff in the previous Thor films, the Thor movies were primarily dark storylines - one where he was banished and had to prove himself by learning to be human, the other where his humanity cost him the life of his mother and endangered his people. I feel Marvel kind of noticed Thor performed the worst and decided to just tell someone to go 'all out' on the movie in the hopes something will hit.

@Scarilian - I don't think anyone ever said it was a comedy.
