TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura On What To Expect From The BUMBLEBEE Movie

In between Transformers: The Last Knight and the next film in the series, Paramount will be releasing a standalone Bumblebee movie. So far, few details have been released about the film, but what we do know is it will be set in the 80's, it will have a young female lead and Travis Knight will direct.

While doing the press rounds for The Last Knight , series producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke with Collider about what to expect from the movie. "The objective of that movie is to develop more time with less robots, and to go back to 1985 and to go back to the original heritage, if you would, of the Transformers, G1. So, it has a very distinct idea in it, and whatever is going to happen with the chemistry is what's going to happen. But it really is a young female lead opposite of Bumblebee, and I think that Optimus is going to be jealous that Bumblebee has his own movie," said di Bonaventura.

During the set visit for Transformers: The Last Knight, it was revealed that Bumblebee may be the only robot in his solo movie. While being pressed on that di Bonaventura stops just short of confirming this info. "There are less Transformers, dramatically less," He said. "We hired, purposely, Travis Knight who's a very distinct filmmaker. You can't compete with Michael [Bay], you're going to loose. Also, the audience want's something different all the time, let's keep them interested. So, they're going to get a very emotional, complex story. A very tight story, in terms of its location, in terms of its storytelling. In fact it reminds me a little bit of The Iron Giant when I did that movie at Warner Brothers. It just reminds me a little bit of that, where that it feels contained, but it doesn't feel small."

Bumblebee is scheduled to be released on June 8, 2018.

No-no-no, I am done with these films. Much like Fox with the X-Men, the world they've been attempting to build is just so consummately f**ked at this point that I no longer care about the possibilities of where it could go. So if I really need to get a Transformers fix, I'll just be content to relish in Transformers:Prime while I wait on a reboot of the this petrified dog turd of a film series.

@Parker00 - I actually really also like Prime's sequel series Robots in Disguise. It's not for every fan, but it's good.

Bay bludgeoned these franchise to death,so the interest is low......but I wouldn't mind them exploring Bumblee during World War II.

@Chekkarma - Or the Vietnam War! It worked well for KONG: SKULL ISLAND and I wouldn't mind if the studio and filmmakers work on that idea for a future TRANSFORMERS spin-off feature film.

@demery - Vietnam was a dirty, disgusting, mess. It haunts a bazillion people to this very day. I'm not usually someone who cares about being "respectful", but I think we should not romanticize war.

It was also one of my original problems with WW wayyy back when it was announced, and part of the reason why I don't particularly care for CA:TFA. It just kinda makes my skin crawl when war is reduced to a "good guys vs bad guys" action movie.

@ALostCause - @ALostCause - This is why I say Wonder Woman is nothing like Captain America: The First Avenger. Captain America: The First Avenger treated war as some kind of exciting adventure where America is the hero and Germany is the villain, and fighting in war is fun. But Wonder Woman didn't make World War I fun. It was awesome seeing that trench run, and Wonder Woman take on the soldiers in that little village. But it was because it was Wonder Woman. Not because of the war scene, and the movie was extremely focused on showing that there is no victory in war. Wonder Woman saves the village. But then its gassed not long after. She defeats Ares, but it changes nothing, and she knows it. That's why she walks away. It's actually an anti-war film. The theme of "Nobody 'wins' a war" is very clear throughout. The only way we can win a war is by not even starting one. There is good and bad in all of us, but by choosing the good, and looking for the good in others, by loving others, that's how we can really achieve victory.

I'm an easy critic. Not very harsh, and easy to please for the most part. Plus I'm a huge Transformers fan. I watched The Last Knight last week. It's complete garbage. Trash. An embarrassment of a film. What the [frick] was even going on the whole movie? My least favorite in the franchise. I honestly think the only thing the movie did right, was wipe away a lot of the horrible creative decisions from Age of Extinction, and set up the next movie to be a lot better.

Apparently Megan Fox isn't the only person giving BJ's to that asshat, Micheal Bay. "You can't compete with Michael [Bay], you're going to lose." Are you flipping kidding me?! I already know this isn't going to be "like" Iron Giant. It's going to be the exact same story and Bumblebee will be the Iron Giant. Bumblebee is tough as nails and has seen wars and all kinds of craziness. Let's not do that though! Let's make a movie about his relationship with a little girl. LAME!

The magic behind 80's cartoons is that they involved a lot of talent from the sci fi and comics world who were looking for work who were given the mandate to come up with as many concepts and characters as humanly possible so a bunch of toys can be made out of them. When you throw enough stuff against a wall something is bound to stick. But when you have the likes of Jack Kirby, Dennis O'Neil, Gil Kaine, Larry DiTillo, J Michael Stracynski, etc. throwing a bunch if stuff against a wall you get magic. In a lot of cases kids watched these shows because they wanted to see their favorite character(s). But we all had different favorite characters. So, in part, the fandom of these shows is a loose conglomeration of people who liked the show for different reasons.

Transformers at its heart was about a bunch of cool characters and the conflict between not only their opposing faction but also with adapting to life on Earth while trying to get back home. Now, yes, this story was told truth the lens of a 22 minute episodic cartoon. But these characters were fleshed out first by Dennis O'Neil who gave these guys their own personalities and back stories much like Larry Hanna did with GI Joe. When you start with characters first your story is going to be better by corrolary because it makes the story writing more organic. That's why all those shows are still so loved. You had cool characters mixed in with cool concepts (and toys).

With the Bay movies the first thing they think about is having X number of "cool" action sequences and then they come up with a narrative framework that will yield those sequences. THEN they try to populate that framework with characters. This problem is further compounded by who the studio chooses as the creative talent behind that process. That's why this film franchiseb will always look "cool" but never live up to its conceptual potential.

@beane2099 - you're right, as a G1 kid, i know the stories and characters aren't the deepest, but damn if that concept of transforming robots into cars, military and dinosaurs doesn't send the coolness factor through the roof even today. then beast wars comes along and shows you can actually create characters and arcs to care about. it's why i've never believed this crap "bay was best thing to happen to transformers". the series has been around this entire time and anybody with a monkey writing could've made a hit out of that concept. it's just.. it could've been better and not so damn low brow, made for the lowest IQ audiences.. could've been so much more

I'm very very very cautiously hopeful for this movie. Bumblebee is a good character for a solo movie. And i still even like a couple of the Transformers movie. My son also loves them so it'll be a good movie for me and him to see.

SMH i don't understand how the studio does not understand that we don't care about the human characters AT ALL.its TRANSFORMERS!!! I want to learn about them and see them not watch them pay second fiddle to useless human characters....all you need is one main character to ground them and allow the audience to see thru his eyes..not dominate the screen with their BS...SMH im done with this series...

"You can't compete with Michael Bay, you're going to loose."
First of all, *lose*. Second, he can't even compete with a good movie, mother[frick]er. Who are you kidding yourself? Just because you've got different director don't mean it's gonna be any less like the Bayformers films. Just with less robots which makes it even worst.
SisterSunday52
SisterSunday52 - 7/9/2017, 8:04 AM
@RockBottom - It's from the director of Kubo and the Two Strings, and stars Hailee Steinfeld. So there is a strong chance that it's a good movie. Of course it would be even better if it was the first of a rebooted Transformers franchise. But it's probably not, especially after hearing these guys.

@AMrSundayGirl58 - well hell, in that aspect, on paper it should be even better than anything Mike "you can't compete with" Bay has EVER done.. better director, writers and actress than anything his TF series has had. ironic i guess, you can't compete.. you can actually outdo..??
