The Walking Dead usually opens each season with a very strong episode, and last night's instalment kept up the trend. In what could be one of the most brutal, nail-biting scenes in the show's history, we pick up immediately where we left off at the end of season 4, with Rick, Glen, Daryl and Bob facing a particularly nasty end at the hands (and blades..and baseball bats) of the Terminus folk, who are now all-but confirmed to be cannibals. Fortunately for them, Carol steps up her badassery to 11 and gives them the opportunity to escape. After that all hell breaks lose, as Terminus struggles to keep the walkers out, and Rick and co. focus on killing everything that crosses their path as they try to make it back into the woods. There's gruesome zombies, gruesome flaming zombies, gruesome flaming zombies eating people's faces off -- it's disgustingly awesome. When his group are clear of Terminus, Rick is adamant that they should go back and finish the job, but when Carol shows up with baby Judith he decides moving on is the best option. Why do I get the feeling that's gonna come back to bite him (or more likely someone he cares about) in the ass? The ep ended with a flashback to Gareth and his people at the mercy or a man who looked a lot like comic book baddie Negan...but I reckon that was an intentional bit of misdirection. Then we actually get a little Walking Dead post credits scene, as Morgan returns and sets out after the group.

So an episode that had it all, and should please fans who've become a little jaded with the show -- but can it maintain this quality? Guess we'll find out next week. For now vote in the poll below, and then sound off in the usual place.

Obviously I expect a lot of violence on this show, but I almost shit myself when they actually showed (and didn't cut away) the crackin' of skulls and cutting of the necks over the trough at the beginning...that was crazy violent, even for the Walking Dead, I didn't think they'd show 'humans' getting their heads knocked by bats then show the actually slicing of the necks, damn, they mean business this season...

I liked the the show last night but I still found a couple things that were pains in my ass. Carol perfect shot with a firework....pretty dumb. 1 in a million shot just leaning the gun up against a fence. Dumb but Ill let the luck slide. Everything with tyreese just annoyed me. First, either kill the guy or if you are too pussy for that do a better job of a) tying the guy up, and B) your only job keep the baby safe. Stop being a dumb shit and do work son. Plus you have a gun. You have a better chance of shooting him in the head then putting your weapons on the grown and going outside with walkers. Besides tyreese's scenes and the magic firework.....I liked everything else in the show. I thought it was cool to see the Penguin show up again.

Yeah, those are kinda the only things that bugged me too...so my original comment should be 'close' to perfection (for me)

For the fireworks, gotta remember, the gas was probably all over that area after she shot a hole in the tank, so really, the fireworks explosion probably only needed to be within 50 feet or so of the tank to explode the entire thing...who knows, kinda let that one slide myself, ha,ha

I was thinking about that firework shot also, but at least they didn't do the normal, just shoot it and or blows bs

Such an amazing episode.

Those first few minutes where they're about to get slit was scary as hell.

Also Morgan is back for good people. And he's clear. Hope he's not just in the shadows for the rest of the season.

was that a foreshadowing of Negan in the flashback at the end? they didn't show his face well and that could be a good way to sidestep in progress casting...

I believe when someone said it will be alright, he said "no it won't".

Yea I remember an article early on about Lost from their creators whee they stated the survivors where not stuck in Purgatory, and look what happened. There is way too much Negan / Savior easter eggs in this episode people.
MisterNiceGuy
MisterNiceGuy - 10/13/2014, 7:15 AM
@Faithcrow, they said the island wasn't purgatory (which was true). The what was assumed to be flash forwards were actually purgatory. They never lied.

Well, that's it for me. They have successfully shown enough messed up stuff to turn me off to the show. This was a great episode. I just don'thave fun watching a bunch of people be brutally murdered and seeing baby's necks almost snapped. Just not fun for me. I know it's definitely how things would go down in this type of situation, but I can't stomach it. And the really sad thing is that folks in real life are brutally murdered in ways like this all over the world every day. Plus, given the flashbacks, we are soon going to meet some folks that are so heinous that they made people into evil butchers. So there is no hope of this going anywhere that I'm going to enjoy. And that is ok, I'm just saddened by the fact that I'm done watching a show I used to like.

It's as if the writers seemingly (continue) to emasculate Tyreese in this show; Is it because they've introduced so many non-canon characters to the show that they just cherry-pick from his characteristics for the likes of composite characters like T-Dawg & Darryl; or dissect & infuse parts of his traits to flesh out/ humanize Herschel, Carol or 'prison good guy #1 & #2 or countless other 'red shirt' weekly zombie fodder for the season, I'm not sure.
It's a little disappointing to see him somewhat wasted in live action format(if only due to the great waste of acting potential from Chad Coleman)and although I can appreciate how 'bad-ass' they've made Carol by stepping away from her comic book roots, it seems to come partially at the cost of cutting away many of the great story beats & attributes that showed why Tyreese was such an asset not only to the group but his bond with Rick in particular. Here's hoping that things will turn the corner for him this season(atleast before he has to draw in the 'season finale lottery').

I am just going to say it:

Carol is HOT!

Maybe not in the traditional sense because lets face it, if there were a word that did NOT describe Melissa Mcbride, it is nubile. But there is something about the way the character holds herself and coldly goes through a through a scene while still being badass but THEN show vulnerability that is super attractive. Maybe it is just me I dunno ...but I would put her just a bit behind Lauren Cohan when she is playing Maggie as far as attractive Walking Dead ladies go.

Though I am a bit concerned for Carol's mortality at this point as this past weekend at a NYCC panel she broke down in tears when talking about the character. People want to talk about rioting if Darryl dies but I am okay if he goes (he won't yet). I am MORE concerned if Carol dies. She NEEDS to at least make it to the group's date with Lucille. I think at this point, along with Darryl and the classic victim ...she is the strongest candidate to have the most effect with the viewer's when the time comes.

BTW, I am predicting that Rick was one hundred percent right in that they should have finished off all of Terminus right then and there. I think Gareth is going to take out Rick and crew in a BIG way. They will probably be a version of the hunters: a weak group picking off any stragglers with less of a focus on cannibalism. I think the producers are avoiding OUTRIGHT saying that that is what Terminus was on the actual show (though they have pretty much admitted to it everywhere else, but it isn't played up on the show).

Speaking of which ...that blood letting scene was the most disturbing thing I have ever seen on television (I don't watch Game of Thrones). It told you everything you needed to know about the termites: other people have just become cattle to them.

God, I hope Lenny James joins the cast this season (as I think if Andrew Lincoln ever left, he is a VERY suitable replacement for Rick as he is an amazing actor and the second survivor we really got to know. The pilot seemed to be a start not just for Rick's story but for Morgan). I loved that they pulled an MCU with that scene after the credits as I honestly thought it was just an opening for the Talking Dead and the mystery man would pull of his mask to reveal Hardwick or Conan or something else funny. Good swerve. I think he is the one who is going to save Beth and the 'X' in the tree refer to the group that has her captured.

And another thing about 'groups,' the rapers and pillagers I found interesting as it first I thought the guy at the very end was Negan ...but Gimple and Nicotero disproved that. But they could have possibly been Randal's group as the timelines DO match up ...as well as the actions that Randal described.

Very excellent episode and I cannot wait for more.

I wonder if Carol will be the show's version of the comic's Andrea. I always hated how they made Andrea in the show. She's an awesome kick ass female in the comics without ruining too much for those of you who haven't read the series yet. They are both very similar character wise now.

The leader of the group that took over Terminus in the flashbacks isn't Negan. It's the crazy guy that they freed, but then got immediately attacked by the zombies, https://tv.yahoo.com/news/walking-dead-mystery-villain-150108831.html.
