THE WALKING DEAD CCO Addresses Whether We'll See Michonne In AMC's Planned RICK GRIMES Movie

On Sunday night's episode of The Walking Dead, we bid farewell to Danai Gurira's Michonne, but with some big hints about the character's future, could we see her return in the Rick Grimes movie?

Danai Gurira's time in The Walking Dead is officially at an end, but Sunday's episode of the long-running series dropped some big hints about what the future holds in store for the character. After discovering evidence that Rick Grimes is alive, the katana wielding badass set off to find him, leaving her story somewhat open-ended and the door definitely open to a return.

Now, The Walking Dead Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple has weighed in on the possibility of us getting to see Michonne in the planned Rick Grimes movie coming to theaters.

"Is it fair to assume? It's definitely fair to assume that," he teased during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "There might even be her own story along the way. Some of it has to do with the way we're playing around with the story right now. There's this whole new story strand opened up with her departure."

"We look at these stories as, 'What was the point of her story?'" he continued. "At the end of her journey where she has these unbelievable hints about Rick and a direction to go in, she still stops to help someone. That's who she is and who she's become. In some ways, even though she has a whole lot of story ahead of her, that completes her journey on The Walking Dead."

So, that part of Michonne's story is at an end, but it would be crazy for her not to return when we next catch up with Rick Grimes (after he was mysteriously lifted to safety on board that helicopter).

After all, their romance has become a key part of the series in recent years, even if it was introduced almost completely out of the blue. There's no word on when this spinoff movie is likely to be released, but it should hopefully come our way at some point in the next couple of years.

We'll keep you guys updated!

These planned movies require too much knowledge of the current seasons. I'm not sure how these movies are suppose to revitalize the franchise if it's only aimed at its diminishing fan base. TWD movies are just cheap cash grabs if they aren't going to close any of these character's arcs. It seems to me like they are trying to expand and create more spin offs...like WTF? Rick & Michonne's actors have already "quit" the show and the producers just can't let them go.

TWD was too much of a good thing at its peak. They really should have planned a definitive 8 season series and called it. Instead the kept going. But I hear it's actually good nowadays? But with so many of the cast gone, I just don't know. I'm still hesitant. All we have left are who? Carol and Daryl?

The Walking Dead movies idea reminds me of the X-Files movies. The actors couldn't wait to get off the show. Then when nobody gives a F about the show anymore they're all into making the movies. Then guess what? Nobody cares about the movies because the public's interest in the whole thing has passed. The WD actors want to leave and the show is fading. Nobody is going to care by the time they feel like making these movies.

Still wondering, are these Rick Grimes movies big budget films for theaters, or smaller budget productions for the AMC channel?

@gremlin22 - I believe when they were announced they said they would be released in theaters with a movie sized budget

I watched this last episode. She left her children to go find her man. Not many people would do that in real life, especially in their circumstance. Terrible writing.

@CplHicks -

The first X-Files movie was huge. The set up was there. The TV series had been building to the reveal of a
truly apocalyptic cinematic event that would prove Mulder was right and expose the alien threat to the
world where some kind of resistance could be organized. Instead, they decided to continue the conspiracy
storyline because the TV series was still on for a few more seasons. People felt cheated and when the next
X-Files film came out everybody said "pass".

It worked when Star Trek TNG became a film franchise because that series had come to a definitive end
and it was ready to move to a larger canvas for larger-scale stories.

You still had Trek spinoffs on TV but the main show had transitioned.

For a TWD movie to work, you need the whole series to end and the surviving cast members to be in
a film with A-list guest stars.
