THE WALKING DEAD SPOILERS: Find Out How Rick Grimes Was Written-Off The Show

It's been well documented that tonight's episode of The Walking Dead would be Andrew Lincoln's final time playing series lead Rick Grimes, and now we know how the character was written-off the show...

We knew we'd be saying goodbye to the main character of The Walking Dead tonight, and now we know how Rick Grimes checked out. Major SPOILERS follow.

Despite all signs pointing to Rick's demise, he actually survived and the door is open for Andrew Lincoln to return some day! The majority of the episode dealt with a seriously injured Rick searching for his "family" while experiencing visions of long-gone friends and foes - including the late Scott Wilson as Herschel Green - until he finally led the walker herd to the bridge.

There, Michonne, Maggie, Daryl and the others came to their leader's rescue, but Rick knew he was on borrowed time and had only one option left.

Grimes fired at some sticks of dynamite that'd been knocked over by a walker, blowing the bridge - and, seemingly, himself - to smithereens. However, when we returned from break it was revealed that Rick had actually been blown into the river, only to be discovered washed-up on the bank by Anne, who persuaded the pilot of that mysterious helicopter to rescue him.

So, Rick survives... and contrary to what we'd been led to believe, it will not be the last we see of him!

During an interview on The Talking Dead, EP Scott Gimple announced that Lincoln will reprise his role as Rick in a series AMC original Walking Dead movies. We don't have too much more to go on for now, but this is very exciting news for fans of the character.

Check out a promo for the next episode below (new characters, time-jump, older badass Judith!), and be sure to share your thoughts on all of these huge developments in the usual place.

I honestly thought the show would be over for me after Rick was gone...but damn they changed the status quo so much that I'm super excited for the upcoming episodes now.

That and the Rick Grime's movies they're making!

Excellent episode!

This whole season has been a dramatic improvement!

I stopped watching earlier this season. The show just doesn’t do it for me anymore. The characters are dull & forgettable, the plot lines are repetitive, the zombie stuff is played out, and show doesn’t appear to have a finish line.

But I tuned in during the last 20 minutes to see how Rick dies… and he doesn’t die. Undoubtedly AMC wants to keep Rick alive for some future TV spinoff or movie.

Seems like the best of both worlds. Lincoln is tired of doing the show but the character can return with no need to recast.

@RolandD - He's not tired of doing the show. Not sure where you pulled that out of. He was missing his kids who are very young. His family is in England. So he wanted to be with them.

He can now film these AMC original movies about Rick while being home in England

@bigdannymac -

I think he was tired of doing the regular show and the production grind that came with it.
He is smart enough to not outright kill off his signature character while there is still potential
to use it to raise his status as a leading actor.

In addition to his concerns for his family, I suspect, Lincoln would like to be free to take on other projects.

Now he gets to do a trilogy of original movies that should demand a bigger budget and could
be shot in England, Vancouver, or Los Angeles.

In fact, I'm betting the Rick Grimes films are going to be shot in LA so he could take on another
project back to back with TWD film before going back to England.

He could even bring his kids to LA since the climate is not as humid as Atlanta is.

@bigdannymac - He’s tired of doing the show because he wants to be with his kids. Is that too much of a reach for you? So literal! 😂🤣

Wow AMC can go f%ck themselves, what a shitty ploy to get ratings. The sad thing is this season has been better then the last seasons and this episode would have been great if they had the balls to kill Rick but no they botched out.

Them expanding the universe with the three films about Rick is a dumbass idea. Talk about a way to milk a series dry and that twist with Judith made no sense at all. I'm waiting for them to announce the prequel film about Rick Grimes horse becouse that's how desperate AMC seems.

Only a Tupac gif can represent my frustration with AMC, Gimpil, and Andrew Lincoln.

@CurlyBill - they milked this series dry 2 seasons and a spinoff ago.

Watching this episode reminded me of why I stopped watching TWD in the first place... piss poor writing and horrible pacing.

I don't remember the directing and special effects being so awful though; but there's that too.

But AMC is going to do a Rick Movie Trilogy?

@WakandaTech - I honestly feel that this season is the best it has been since season 2. Idk if you're watching or not, but if you're not, definitely give season 9 a chance.

then it was the survivors
now it's the viewers.

Uhhhhhh - 11/4/2018, 9:44 PM
@Battabing - I don't think it was all a ploy for ratings. Andy Lincoln genuienly wants to be back home with his family. I know he's making films as Rick for AMC starting next year, but that's only going to take 2 months to produce, whereas it takes 9 months for him to film a season of the show. 9 years and 81 months is a long time to be away from your family.

They sure got us. I suspected Rick wasn't going to die when he walked onto that bridge.

Isn't that repeating the cliffhanger with the Madison family on FTWD complete with a time jump?

dracula
dracula - 11/4/2018, 10:09 PM
Should have ended it with it looking like he is dead. Then open the first movie with him being found and saved, now unless you watch the movies, you don't know what happened to him and if your only watching the series, your wondering where the hell rick is. If they had just cut out the part with him being found, then that would have been a good ending to his story as far as the main show is concerned
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 11/4/2018, 10:39 PM
That ending was good. The show has a pulse and maybe it will turn around.
dracula
dracula - 11/4/2018, 10:48 PM
@GeneralZod - Arrow was able to turn it around after the disaster that was season 4, so who knows. The problem with a zombie show, is that it's pretty impossible to not get repetitive or boring, season 2 had less zombies and was boring, then the show got repetitive after the prison was destroyed

I skipped the last two episodes. It's weird tuning out after so many years, but it's been at least two years or so since I enjoyed an episode. This season's premiere was their last chance, and it was just as terrible as always. There aren't really any more good stories from the comics left to mine anyway, and I'm extremely close on giving up the boring comic too.. Bye bye, TWD.
ThouBear8
ThouBear8 - 11/4/2018, 11:23 PM
I'm glad they didn't kill him off, but I am beyond irritated at their decision to "expand the walking dead brand & universe". They already wore this series too thin & every new movie or show they try to add to it will only make it worse.

This season has been an improvement (no doubt due to the new showrunner) but I am still done watching. The show hasn't felt like itself without Glenn, I have no interest watching it try to exist without Rick. If I knew they had an endgame to finish the show in the next year or so, I'd stick it out. But they don't, so I'll be checking out now.

I wish all the cast & crew the best, I really do. Maybe somewhere down the line I'll go back & finish this show. But I can't take any more of their greediness (the network & producers, not the actors or crew). It's been a hell of a ride.
