ANGEL Cast Reunites On EW Cover For 20th Anniversary Of Joss Whedon's Vampire Drama Series

It might be hard to believe that it's been 15 years since the divisive series finale of Angel, but here we are.

Joss Whedon's beloved vampire drama series had to scramble to tie up several major plot threads in its last season when the show was prematurely cancelled, and while many feel they pulled it off, the ambiguous final scene did come in for a lot of backlash.

There have been numerous fan petitions for Angel's return, and while that's highly unlikely at this point, EW has brought the cast back together for a special 20th anniversary edition.

You'll find the cover, which features Alexis Denisof (Wesley), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), David Boreanaz (Angel), Amy Acker (Fred) and J. August Richards (Gunn), below. Be sure to check out the accompanying article, which contains some intriguing insights and anecdotes from the stars.

Tell us, did you watch Angel back in the day? If so, how did you feel about how the show ended? Drop us a comment down below.

Well now I’m going to have to watch the whole series again. Thanks.

While this show was on I absolutely loved it but it and Buffy really don’t hold up. Buffy, Angel, and Charmed were a huge part of my childhood and getting into the supernatural and I’ll always love them for that even if each is very dated today

@Ha1frican - I have to disagree. Not so sure about Charmed, but dozens of people are currently reviewing and reacting to Buffy and Angel on Youtube and they're really enjoying the experience.

They really do hold up, especially in terms of characterizations, story structure and storytelling. One of the biggest complaints of modern TV shows, especially full season network shows, is that they have too many episodes and the story ends up being stretched way too thin. But you watch Buffy and Angel, which have 22 episodes each season, and you never once think this season or story is dragging on. I don't know what happened over the years, but modern writers seem to have largely lost the skill to adeptly tell a longform storyarc.

@tazmaniak - Well said, and you’re absolutely right - Angel and many other shows from its era hold up just fine, and much of that is due to their brilliant storytelling. The longform story is somewhat of a lost art these days, but I blame it more on the audiences than the writers. People now have shorter attention spans and no patience, so much so that they complain that shows they claim to enjoy have TOO MANY episodes, and that’s even for series like the Marvel Netflix shows, which only had 13 per season. You never heard such whining back in the day for great shows like Angel, Lost, 24, etc. with 20+ episodes each year.

Um, the finale aired in 2004. I believe you're talking about the 20th anniversary of the START of the show.

@Tensorpants - Right you are.. well, I don't feel QUITE so old now! I'll update asap.

@Tensorpants - to be fair the start of the show was really the middle since it was a spin-off. We already knew angel in all his glory 20 years ago.

Boreanaz (and Hannigan) has been the most successful Buffy alumn of all time, going from one successful TV franchise to another, i.e. Angel, Bones, Seal Team.

I love Angel even more than Buffy as a show. I seasons 1,2 and 5 of Angel are up there with Buffy seasons 1-3 for me. I agree that Buffy seasons 4-7 doesn’t hold up so well. Once it loses the ‘high school is hell’ metaphor it kind of loses its way. I loved the ending of Angel. ‘If nothing we do matters, all that matters is what we do’ is the quote which best describes Angels battle for redemption, and the show finishing with him making a last stand against insurmountable odds is pretty perfect.

@Battabing - Seth Green was in the Austin Powers movies and has Robot Chicken on Adult Swim for the 5-6th? Season and has been Chris Griffin on Family Guy since day one.. not saying your wrong, just don’t forget Seth

@Sixesandsevens - Seasons 4-5 of Buffy may not hold up as well as the first 3 seasons but they do feature several of the best episodes in the entire series like Hush, Restless and The Body. Restless is probably my favorite episode of any TV show.

@Sixesandsevens - Funny, while I love every season of Angel, 3&4 are the real standouts for me.

Loved the show Angel I have all of the seasons on DVD. I couldn't get into Buffy but Angel had a lot action and humor. Hated when the show ended always wanted to see if there was going to a reboot of movie its cool that EW is recognizing the show and cast.

Recently re-watched the entire Buffyverse and yes both shows are still awesome. Angel's final season and series finale is so great that most of the current stuff on TV just pales in comparison. It's also great seeing all the Marvel/DC references littered throughout both shows.

A friend of mine got me to watch a little bit of Buffy in the middle of its run. Some of it was really well written and creative, but like with the current CW shows, I felt like the LBGT stuff was starting getting rammed down my throat in every episode. I watched a few seasons of Angel and I was impressed with that too. The relationships were interesting. I thought the humor was more organic than in Buffy. I think they took some style cues from the Blade movies at the time. I never really liked Vampire stuff very much, so it's a real testament to Whedon and the writers that I watched as much as I did. Once Alias and Smallville started up around 2001, I just switched gears and stopped watching Buffy and Angel. Superman and Spy action are more my thing.

@bs77 - Gotcha'. I imagine there was significantly more attention paid to heterosexual "stuff."

You probably just don't like LGBTQ "stuff" in general.
Radders
Radders - 6/21/2019, 7:18 AM
@bs77 - I didn't feel like the "LGBT stuff" was being rammed down my throat at all? The show just depicted characters who were gay amongst many other who weren't
DalekCraigWasson
DalekCraigWasson - 6/21/2019, 9:08 AM
@Radders - Yup. One of the 5 or 6 main characters was gay, and she had two female love interests over the last four seasons, all pretty par for the course for the straight characters (Buffy had 3 partners, Xander had 3 partners, etc.).

I have long understood "We don't want _____ rammed down my throat" is a code for "I don't want this period." People say it when sexuality is a major part of their character, or when they're a character who just happens to be gay. They say it if it's your main character and they say it if it's a walk-on role. To these people, the way you don't jam it down their throats is not including it.
dracula
dracula - 6/21/2019, 12:16 PM
@bs77 - How was LGBT stuff shoved down your throat, there was literally 2 characters who were lesbians, and their relationship wasn't treated as anything special, it was treated the same as any other relationship on the show

i used to love this series unfortunately but they posed a great question with one villain . if she eats a certain small portion of the population , BUT everyone else lived in bliss and there was no more war , starvation , or any other man made ill .... would you go with it ?
EskimoJ
EskimoJ - 6/21/2019, 6:26 AM
@knocturnalzen10 - People continue to go along with other segments of the population being targeted today -- since it doesn't affect them personally -- so what should have been a great question seems to actually have an obvious answer.

knocturnalzen10 - 6/21/2019, 6:32 AM
@EskimoJ - correct being man-made disease but what if it's a emotion of high level bliss and the trade would be the knowledge of it being a horrid beast you seeing do this . we can say we know but most won't accept the idea of population control , if it's force feed to you would the response be the same ?
