BATWOMAN's New Kate Kane, Wallis Day, Opens Up About Replacing Ruby Rose As The Scarlet Knight

Batwoman recently added Wallis Day to The CW series as the new Kate Kane (replacing Ruby Rose), and the actress has now explained what she hopes to bring to the role of Gotham City's original Batwoman...

When Ruby Rose decided to walk away from the role of Kate Kane in Batwoman, The CW tapped Javicia Leslie to play a newly created character, Ryan Wilder. However, Kate's fate was left a mystery, and much to the surprise of fans, she wasn't killed off. Now, the show has revealed that the hero is still alive...she just has a new face.

Wallis Day is playing this new version of the Scarlet Knight, and during a recent interview with CBR, the actress opened up on how she landed the role and what she hopes to bring to this Kate.

"Yeah, so I actually went out for it last year, when they announced the departure of Ruby [Rose]," she explained. "But a few weeks into the process, they said that they were heading in a different direction. But [showrunner] Caroline [Dries] wrote me an email letter and just said, ‘Listen, we're going in a different direction, but if we do end up bringing Kate back, I'll give you a call.’ And I was just like, ‘Yeah, right, everyone always says this to the actors!’"

"But to be honest, I was really upset about it, because it just felt like such a right move. You never really get excited, because you kind of get used to rejection as an actor, but it just gnawed at me. In January, Caroline called, and I was like, ‘Yes, I do still want to play Kate! Let's do it!’ And here we are."

While she may be playing the same version of Kate, Day is bound to bring something new to the role. Asked what that might look like, the actress elaborated on her plans for the hero.

"Justice is what I will probably link to Kate. She is so much about fairness, but also about being so authentically herself. That's why I love her, because she does have this edgy grit about her and she's not afraid to be who she is, and that stood out for me as well," Day revealed. "But I think, more than anything, it was the way that she just wants to look out for the people she loves and make the world better in such a dark place like Gotham."

Batwoman returns to The CW tomorrow, so we'll soon learn more about her take on the iconic DC Comics superhero. Whether she'll suit up remains to be seen, especially now Wilder is serving as Gotham City's Batwoman. Could we get two versions of the same hero protecting their home? We'll see...

She honestly looks like a better fit than Ruby. I am not familiar with her work though so we will see.

@Manmarvel - speaking just from Krypton, I wanted her to replace Rose, I think most fans did when it was rumored. She is leagues better than Ruby, but a bar of soap with a face carved into it could act circles around Ruby. Ruby was a charisma void that some how made other actors worse.

@ElricReturns - lol good. I actively cringed while she was on the crossover. I thought she was a lot better in her actual series BUT that doesn't mean I thought she was good.

Batwoman was such a bonafide mess where casting is concerned, lead actors leaving should usually be reason enough to end a show (same happened with Lethal Weapon).

Rose was never the right fit for the character though

The show inches closer, and closer to it's own cancellation.

Day is a much stronger screen presence and (I think) a better actor for the role than Rose was. I hope she sticks around.

Sucks to have a production disrupted like this, of course, but better to have an awkward first season and sort out your problems by your third season than to start strong and decline rapidly.
