HBO Max has officially ordered Dead Boy Detectives to series. An eight-episode horror detective series spinning out of The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives comic books, it's said that this fresh take on a ghost story explores loss, grief, and death through the lens of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, two dead British teenagers, and their very alive friend, Crystal Palace.
So, it’s a lot like a vintage detective series...only darker and on acid.
Steve Yockey (Doom Patrol) wrote the pilot episode of Dead Boy Detectives and serves as showrunner. Jeremy Carver, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter are executive producers on the series.
"We are excited to be expanding further into the DC Universe with Steve, Jeremy and the Berlanti team with this thrilling new spin on a detective series," says HBO Max's Sarah Aubrey. "We were fascinated by the world of the Dead Boy Detectives that Steve and Jeremy first introduced in ‘Doom Patrol,’ and cannot wait to follow the supernatural sleuths in the lurid mysteries to come."
Yockey adds, "I’ve been obsessed with this comic for a long time, so it’s a true passion project. And Jeremy, Berlanti Productions, DC, WBTV, HBO Max - they’re all encouraging me to run with every wild, bizarre, and unsettling choice. The result is going to be really dark fun."
Now, we're sure many of you remember that Edwin, Charles and Crystal appeared in the "Dead Patrol" episode of Doom Patrol, but they're all set to be played by different actors in the new series. The show will star George Rexstrew as Edwin and Jayden Revri as Charles, while Kassius Nelson has been tapped to star as Crystal. We'll also see Briana Cuoco as Jenny the Butcher, Ruth Connell as the Night Nurse, Yuyu Kitamura, as Niko, and Jenn Lyon as Esther.
