GOTHAM KNIGHTS Is The Latest DC Adaptation To Make Batman A Killer; Jensen Ackles Was Eyed For Bruce Wayne

Gotham Knights premiered on The CW this week, but fans are upset that it's the latest DC adaptation to confirm Batman has broken his no-kill rule. It's also been revealed Jensen Ackles was nearly cast!

Gotham Knights premiered on The CW earlier this week with relatively little fanfare, but there was one small moment in that first episode which has proven to be predictably controversial.

Batman only plays a very minor (pretty much nonexistent) role in the series, but following his murder, The Joker's daughter, Duela Doe, is the prime suspect. After she's arrested and questioned by District Attorney Harvey Dent, he mentions that she had the motivation to kill the Dark Knight as a means of avenging her father.

Later, the newly created Turner Hayes - Bruce's adopted son - also confirms that Batman killed The Joker prior to his demise.

The Caped Crusader is typically portrayed as a superhero with a strict no-killing rule, though there are plenty of live-action versions of the character who have killed. Michael Keaton dished out lethal justice, while Ben Affleck's Batman came under fire for brutally dispatching crooks in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Titans' Bruce also killed The Joker, of course, and George Clooney and Robert Pattinson are the only modern live-action Batmans to not kill on screen. It's a shame that's such a rarity, in all honesty, especially as it contradicts how the character is portrayed on the page.

Actor David Miller plays Batman in Gotham Knights, but Misha Collins (who plays Harvey Dent) revealed in a recent interview that Supernatural star Jensen Ackles was eyed for the role at one point.

"I don't know if I'm supposed to reveal this, but we tried to work it out to have Jensen play Batman on the show. It was all kind of teed up, but unfortunately, Jensen was on another show at the time, and coordinating between two series is challenging," Collins explained. "So it didn't ultimately end up working out, but we tried."

Gotham Knights' first season will consist of 13 episodes, though there's no word on a season 2 renewal.

More like Jensen knew this was a straight up turd and side stepped it to preserve his chances of playing him in a respectable project in the future.

I watched it because before I crap on something, I like to know what the hell I'm actually talking about. Was watching it a complete waste of time, no, but close. It actually got a little interesting toward the end of the episode. But in truth nothing captivating or anything that yells must see TV.

Batman being a killer and Batman being dead are really popular things to do in non-centered Batman properties I suppose. Had to happen sometime a project would have both

I loved the way Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker gave us like 5 minutes where we wondered if Bruce actually killed Joker in the past.

I mean, does it even matter? It's a series where batman died following his adopted son that never was a robin in the comics and no one is becoming a superhero in it. Batman killing is like the least of this shows problems.

What tf is with this obsession of turning Batman into the Punisher? Are people embarrassed by the fact that Batman is actually a superhero? This is why The Batman gets so much props from me. Not only did they make it VERY clear that this Batman does not get down like that, but they legit had him come into the light as a hero in the end, just helping the citizens from Gotham.

Let's make an X-Men show that starts off with Xavier already dead. He had killed Magneto and then Toad killed Xavier for revenge. So now, Cyclops, who's real name is Larry Jenkins, who isn't a mutant, gathers his buddies from the orphanage to hunt down Toad.

Batman had always killed people in some form. Get over it.
CorndogBurglar

@JobinJ - This is true. He's killed, or tried to kill people several times throughout history. But he only does it when he feels he has no other choice. Too often we get versions of Batman where that isn't the case and he just kills people with no problem. Like he doesn't even have a no kill rule.

@CorndogBurglar - yes and those versions where he kills that we get as you say, too often, are canon. So therefore, Batman kills people.

@JobinJ - He actually hasn't killed very many people in canon. If we're talking about the comics. But he has killed, and he has attempted to kill. Darkseid comes to mind. He even broke his no guns rule for that one. KGBeast also comes to mind. I mean, he walled him in behind bricks and left him to die a horrible and painful death. But KGBeast escaped.

In his very early days he killed a lot, but that was long before any of this no killing started, and he's a far different character than he was then, so I dont really count that.

Most of his actual killing is in esleworlds or out of continuity stories. But to your point, yes, he has killed in canon as well. He just doesn't do it like he does in a lot of his out of continuity versions or movie versions, where he seems to liberally kill people without even thinking twice.

They should have taken a page from the "Pennyworth" playbook and subtitled this:

Batman killing people would be a bigger deal to me if it wasn't something that has been happening in the comics from pretty much the beginning of the character's existence.

Glad Jensen wasn't in it. If he does play a live action Batman, it shouldn't be a killer and he shouldn't die. I think Gotham Knights and it's mishandling of characters will damage the DC Brand to being nothing but CW Canon fodder.

In what version of Batman was he not a killer?

@RebelCommander - DCAU. Arkham Games. Animated movie universe. Young Justice.

Basically all the best versions.
