The Suicide Squad is just over a month away from arriving in theaters and on HBO Max, but production on a spinoff TV series, Peacemaker, has been underway in Vancouver, Canada for a while now. Comprised of eight episodes (five of which have been directed James Gunn), the show is going to arrive on the streaming service next January.
Now, the first official image has been released via Empire Online and it shows John Cena back in costume as the Task Force X member who Gunn describes as "a piece of sh*t." He adds, "[Peacemaker's] not a good guy. And he wears the goofiest costume you’ve ever seen in your life."
"Peacemaker has a clear set of ideals that I find really interesting," the filmmaker continues. "You know: ‘I want peace no matter how many men, women and children I need to kill to get it.’ Sounds like nonsense, but it also makes a lot of sense. And you see in John’s performance how he does not feel good about it – something I thought was the seed of an entire eight-episode show."
Gunn would go on to tease that Peacemaker has "a big science-fiction story," while exploring why it's "not easy" for the villain to live in the world of heroes like Batman, Superman, and Aquaman. Gunn added to that by saying the show "puts him in a situation where he has to face the choices he’s made throughout his life and the extremity of his views."
Cena, who is set to make his return to WWE soon, doesn't have the best opinion of Peacemaker, either "This guy is a loud, obnoxious, bro-ey douchebag," the actor turned wrestler exclaimed. "That sucks. But why? At what point did he become such a douchebag and what does that mean? There’s a lot to dive into there."
