Yesterday evening, The CW finally made a decision about Superman & Lois' future, deciding to give the series a truncated fourth (and likely final) season. Gotham Knights ended up being cancelled, as a result, but it feels like the right choice.
With Superman: Legacy on the horizon, the DCU will soon have a new Man of Steel across film, television, animation, and video games, so it makes sense for DC Studios to allow this show to go out on a high...and avoid the inevitable #SaveSupermanAndLois movement that would have followed an abrupt cancellation.
Talking at a Superman Celebration event prior to the show's future being decided on, Kal-El himself, Tyler Hoechlin, finally weighed in with his thoughts on the role being recast.
"I am very confident that whoever comes in [for Superman: Legacy]...it's so funny, people jump so quickly to say 'That's not it, that's not it!' when they get somebody, but I would just encourage everybody to whoever the next person ends up being [cast as Superman] give them a chance because I'm sure they will be awesome."
"I think anyone who does this has a huge love for it and a real care for the character, even me, who didn't really grow up with the character - you know what Superman means to people, and I think it's just something that you don't mess with unless you really have a care for it. I'm excited to see whoever the next person is."
There are some Arrowverse actors who have been understandably upset or disgruntled about being passed over for their respective roles on the big screen, but Hoechlin is taking it in his stride and clearly supportive of whoever comes next.
He's had a good run as Clark Kent and while it must be disappointing to bid farewell to the role after a fairly lengthy stint so someone else can take over, we're sure his own legacy as Superman will live on.
